Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-07-2013

Have started with my thunderbird 2.
Have the overall shape and the widt sawed out and glued togheter.
Its a start.

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-07-2013

Now mare shapes glued.
These are the guides for the hardfoam ,that will i be later gleu in the gaps .

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - Wombat - 09-08-2013

This will be interesting to watch come together and already you are off to great start just where you are at with it.
Look forward to seeing more updates as you progress with things but it has that TB2 shape aready.

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-09-2013

The gaps filled this day with hardfoam

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-09-2013

Here i have the foam sanded and now you can see the real shape of the craft.

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-09-2013

I hope i can tackle this craft with all her curves but i do my best, and i do it on my own way.
Here i have the plans from the thunderbird what i used for reference.

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - JAWS - 09-09-2013

SWEET!
This will be interesting.
I love these models.
Is this studio scale?
If so I will move it to the other section.

Hi Jaws,

It is a bit larger then studioscale. But when you think it has to be in other section please dont hasitate to move it, i dont mind
The studioscale model was 36 inches and the model i build is 40 inch.
But i want a model that nobody has.And with lot of extras in the model
like legs for lifting on hydraulic and cabin light and ofcourse a removeble pod

regards Ben

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - Wombat - 09-09-2013

It's gonna be a monster alright!

Does sound like it'll be really cool having the legs work. Thats will be pretty damn neat just on it's own actually.
This is a build for me to keep an eye. You are cranking out the progress right now which is good to see and i'm curious as i know nothing about it. Is that hardfoam just layered up blocks of that foam glued between the shape guides you made to start with. I see why you made the shape guilde bit now as it assists with getting the foam sanded down to pretty much the shape you want.

Looking good already and will be good to see more of this.

Phil

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - LastBattlestar - 09-09-2013

Awesome work Ben, a master class in scratchbuilding complex, curved shapes! I guess that using the master, you could make more than one set of body shells....?Smile

Mike

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-09-2013

Yes this will be the master so i can make it hollow when i cast it .
I will make a plaster mold from it.

regards Ben

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-10-2013

Got a good idea how I can make the model stronger today and that I can continue sanding and filling
Had the great idea to remove foam and then fill the hole
with polyester putty
Must be thick enough for strength
So I have taken about 4 to 5mm away
A test piece done and it was strong enough
Now I'm happy with the shapes which now serve as a guide for the putty knife
Actually pretty smart of myself

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-10-2013

btw it was very messy with al the foam that i had removed and sanded yesterday and today.
I am glad to have a workroom for modelbuilding.
So no complains from wife haha about the messy

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-19-2013

Have a lot putty used on the model i guess about 4 kg
So it is heavy now, and strong to work further with it as the master.
Not all of the surfice is nice i have to put more putty on and sand

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-19-2013

Have the model separated in 3 parts so it works easyer.
One part of the hull i have disassembled to that is difficult to do when it is one piece.

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-19-2013

this is the part where I'm talking about
I made separately from mdf.
With the difficult curves.

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - Wombat - 09-19-2013

Looking good there and very interesting watching this progress. Out of my league this sort of build which makes it that more fascinating for me seeing how you go about creating a subject with such a shape. Keep it coming!!

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - jedimaster - 09-19-2013

Excellent... Did you mold this by any chance?

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-20-2013

I havenot any mold done this what i am doing wright now is the master for the molds later, and then i can make more models from it and they will be hollow for the extras in this model.

Regards Ben

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-22-2013

I have a lot done to get the shape wright.
Make all the corners from the pod the same at the bottom.
And have put on more putty were needed for a nice fit to the model.
I have to do the corners from the craft the same as the pod so they have a good match.I have that done with a piece of plastic with the wright curve.
The plastic i held to the corners and have put putty on them and the plastic used as a guide for this.

Tomorrow i hope to do the corners of the craft. And when i have the shape of the pod wright i can do the raised lip on the sides of the craft, for a good fit for the pod.

hope you like the update Regards Ben

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - Wombat - 09-22-2013

I'm liking it!!Cool

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-27-2013

Pod edge I have custom-made of HDF the front and the back and left slightly larger on the outside.
The inside of the edge is sanded in the shape of the pod, and slightly smaller than the size of the pod, this is the thickness of the edge
This I'm sticking with resin on the edge of the pod.
And then I remove the excess on the outside.
This leaves a nice edge on.
Tomorrow pictures of result.

Regards Ben

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 09-28-2013

Today I sanded the pod on the outside edge.
And edge treated again for strength with resin.
The HDF material is quite strong.
and it's just a very thin edge but it is sturdy enough.
The raised lip on the model to close the pod tightly is also well done, perhaps here and there some sanding.
hope you like the update.

regards Ben

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - jedimaster - 09-29-2013

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - JAWS - 09-29-2013

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - Cylon-Knight - 09-30-2013

Amazing work, Ben!! Your build is sweet.

...side note - did you hear of Gerry Anderson's Gemini Force project? (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1717674777/gerry-andersons-gemini-force-one)
I learned of it the other day from Andrew Probert's facebook posting, Andrew is helping with the art / concepts for the project. It looks every bit as cocol as the Thunderbirds!

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 10-02-2013

More pictures in sunlight for looking of the shape is wright.

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 10-02-2013

Today i have some done to the legs.
The first section that goes in the craft 4 pieces with the biggest diameter.
And one done that goes in the first tube with the seal of 2 o rings.
This all i have done on my lathe, this is all made of massif brass so need a lot of drilling and make the outer diameter that goes in the tube.

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 10-02-2013

Placed woodenlegs of 20 cm long to see if the lift with the brass legs is enough.
With the four pieces of brass legs will give a lift of 20 cm high.

Regards Ben

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - Wombat - 10-02-2013

Shaping up very nicely there from what i can tell.

The working legs will be a great addition to it just for display options alone.

Very cool and at 40" will catch more than an eye or two for sure.

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 10-06-2013

A lot of work done on my lathe to compleet one leg, and 3 others 2 sections done.
here you can see what i mean .
How the legs will be working and i hope it seals off .
I have used 2 o rings for sealing better then one.

enjoy the pictures

Regards Ben

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - Wombat - 10-06-2013

Just incredible what you have planned for this build. Those legs are gonna look sweet as they are but functioning as well just adds a whole lota WOW to them.

Nice bit turning there!

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 10-10-2013

PPPPPFFFFFF all the four legs done.
Still make only a valve with a nipple soldered properly to where the hose is connected to the oil. But these materials I have not yet received
for the connection of the hoses.Hope to get the materials this week.

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - Wombat - 10-10-2013

Nice work!

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 11-27-2013

Have make a mold for for the legs at the end of the legs ,that part fits in the underside were the legs go in the hull.
Have made that part to and cast in resin also.
Last two pictures you can see how it fits and this is all you can see with the legs retracted in to the hull.

hope you like the update,
Regards Ben

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 11-27-2013

Have done a bit more to the model,
Changed the back from the sidebooms to the thrusters.
So now it is a slightly curve.
Make one of the thrusters i used a plastic pipe for that and a piece of plastic for drilling the holes for the back.
See pictures for details.
btw i have to make molds from several parts and cast them in resin.

RE: Thunderbird 2 scratchbuild 40 inch - bensmodelworld - 11-27-2013
