RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - star-art - 02-07-2016

All I'm saying is modifying the plastic parts is a lot more tricky than it might seem. Having held the vintage trimmed plastic parts from the original studio model in my hand, if I had to modify a vintage rocket kit right now I would know how to go about it. But, for the uninitiated it would be VERY tricky indeed to figure out exactly what needs to be done.

For example, if you trim too much or too little off one side or the other, the raised ridge along the top gets shifted out of the correct position. There are a few other tricks to know as well.

Bottom line, the whole job gets a LOT easier if you have these resin parts on hand. Worst case you can use them as a guide to trim the plastic parts. Best case -- you don't have to do anything at all! Just glue them on. Smile

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - Wombat - 02-07-2016

I agree with you on all that, these parts are good to go pretty much as they are and just how you designed them to be but I'm sure there would be a lot of builders that wouldn't have too much trouble cutting the vintage rocket up and getting it right also. Afterall, the Galactica Builders are some pretty talented fellas. :-)

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - star-art - 02-07-2016

Weird, I replied to this thread earlier and now the post is gone! WTH??

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - star-art - 02-07-2016

Jason, there's some weird stuff going on here again. Joe just made Post 499, Phil replied with Post 500 then I replied with Post 501, that DISAPPEARED then I replied again and it said Post 499. There can't be TWO Post 499s! There is definitely a bug of some sort in the board software. . .

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - Wombat - 02-20-2016

Well after a couple of years of very little action I've finally dragged myself back to the build and done a little more with it. I wouldn't say I'm back in the swing of things just yet but already I've done more this year than over the last couple albeit it that really wasn't hard to do.

During that down time I did manage to pretty much finish the port neck detailing and even though I haven't got everything spot on it has the look of the G just the same. Theres still two parts missing as I never found em, one is not critical as it sits inside the B-29 turret and the other is the pipe that sits in front of the JPS radiators. Couple of pipes I got a bit crooked to how they should be when gluing em on and some parts may be a little out but I'm looking at things as close enough and just leaving it as they are. Give or take things are around the mark so good enough.

I had also made a small start with the port side body detailing but ended up stripping pretty much all of that off and starting again with things. That's the area I'm currently looking at now and what I'll be working on when I have the motivation for it. What you see in the pic is all glued down aft of the cross arm and everything forward of it is just being held in place with blue tack at present. Next step will be to start bending all the pipes up for that area and then I'll start gluing everything down for good.

Who knows how long this will last but least there is some movement at the station again. :-)

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - 3phase - 02-21-2016

Great work mate. Hope to see her finnished one day.

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - darkimmitator - 02-21-2016

Ahhh, great stuff.Aces ,seeing ya back into this again Phil. Accurate, crisp, clean work as usual mate. Keep that mojo dancing man , we G builders crave them updates !!

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - Wombat - 02-21-2016

Thanks fellas, hopefully one day it will get completed, time will tell but at least it's got that lil bit closer over the last couple weeks anyway. Hopefully I can get a bit more done on it in the not too distant future. :-)

Bar a couple of unknowns for this side there isn't really a lot to it. Hated bending some of that piping up aft of the cross arm but thankfully the fwd stuff all looks to be pretty simple to do.

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - Mr. Wabac - 02-21-2016

Glad to see you back at it - with the exception of people such as Jim, Sean and Angelo who seem to treat this more as a sprint this is really a Marathon for the rest of us.
Then of course there is Charles and Richard who seem think running a bunch of Marathons one after the other is fun !
I'm still doing warmups and a brisk walk from time to time.

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - padawan-builder - 02-22-2016

Good to see you back at it again.   Your work is looking as sharp as ever.  It's amazing how much motivation and encouragement to build one can get just knowing there are others doing the same.
Keep it going,
Mel

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - Wombat - 02-22-2016

Thanks and glad to see you boys are still plugging away with your own builds. I'd thinks most of us can draw some inspiration from the other builds that are going on? It's certainly nice to know there are others out there as crazy as I am undertaking such a project anyway. :-)

I don't know much about Angelo's build but both Sean and Jim smashed their builds out in incredible time. Sean it seems is just a machine though when it comes ta building. It's like he starts then next thing whatever he's building is finished. God only knows how he completes his projects out so quick? He got some talent about that boy!

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - star-art - 02-23-2016

Great to see you back on this Phil! It was good catching up with you over the weekend. I hope Richard and I can get back to work on our builds soon, but things continue to be busy here.

PS I see my posts "came back." I wrote Jason about the apparent bug in the software for this BB but did not hear back. There is something strange going on with the display of posts in the thread when the post count hits 500. It's unusual for most threads to get that long, so hopefully this bug won't bother us too often around here.

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - Wombat - 02-23-2016

Thanks Charles and it was great catchin up with both Richard and yourself again as it always is. Haha I think you should perhaps change ya middle name to busy as it's the way your life is these days. Still it's better than the alternative now.

Somehow you fellas really do need to find some time to be able to work on your own projects in your hectic schedules.

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - JAWS - 03-01-2016

Gl your back buddy. I'll bet there's plenty of people that will appreciate having you around. Aswell as myself.

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - ColinSMT - 03-14-2016

Your guys builds are looking good AND do serve to keep us going. I never go the chance to really start my Big G before the move hit. So now 5 months later, the new shop space is finally taking shape. Floor is in, walls are in, counterflow heater is in (uses external air so no risk of fire with solvents, glue etc). And ceiling is just going in this week.

So keep it alive fellas, I hope to join in by summer once I have everything back out and the space is functional!

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - Wombat - 03-28-2016

Port side detailing is almost completed. A couple of unknowns, a part I don't have and a couple of things left off till the middle arm is in place but bar that it's pretty much done for this section. :-)

And a big thanks also to Craig for helping me out with a part I messed up the first time.

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - dbhs - 03-29-2016

Looks great, Phil. Your piping work is super straight as usual. I recently got a set of bending pliers specifically for bending wire to various curves and angles and find it really helpful. Is what you're doing plastic coated wire?

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - JAWS - 03-29-2016

Beautiful.

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - Wombat - 03-29-2016

Thanks fellas!!

Yeah Doug, it's just that Plastruct coated wire I've been using on the build. You got a link to what them pliers are you picked up over there? Curious what they are.

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - LastBattlestar - 04-08-2016

OK, now that's looking pretty damn sexy. Nice to see you back on this matey!

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - Wombat - 04-10-2016

Just one of my problems seems to be staying on it but there is plenty of the year still to go so hopefully I'll get more done before this year is out. I have a couple of issues I need to deal with and neither have me busting to get back to it at the moment.

RE: SS Battlestar....attempt II - dbhs - 04-11-2016

Here's the set that I got. They work better on metal wire than the plastic coated. They tend to leave crimp marks on the plastic coating so for that I've been just using one side of the plier as a guide and hand bending around it.
