RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - Snake Plissken - 10-25-2010 Thanks, did you have to make that part for your buld? RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 10-25-2010 My shuttle is a resin kit so the part came with the kit. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - Richard_2001 - 10-25-2010 Guys, It looks like the shackle off the rear leaf springs of a semi truck with the leaf part cut off maybe that will help you looking for the part in the kit scan Richard RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 10-25-2010 Here's the progress from yesterday. I didn't make any progress on it today but spent time setting up the new AIRBRUSH !!! FYI, I'm using the Plastruct plastic-coated wire for the piping. Phil suggested this and it works great. Bends easy and glues on a little easier than exposed brass. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - JAWS - 10-25-2010 Lookin good Doug. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 10-31-2010 Thanks, Jase. Here's my update from today. I worked on the front underside details today and got a bit of primering started. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - JAWS - 10-31-2010 Heck she's just about done mate. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - 79 Daytona - 11-01-2010 Looking GOOD!!! RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-01-2010 No pics tonight - bummer. I got the bulk of the primering done with the rattle can and will touch up the nooks and crannies with the AB. I got the landing gear parts cleaned up and ready to start putting them on. Also got all the loose (antenni, bells, mount point covers, etc.) bits hot-glued on sticks to paint separately. Hopefully pics tomorrow. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - JAWS - 11-03-2010 Doug I noticed on the Portside you have put 5 of those circular parts under the cabin rim. I have only couted 4 & thats what Ive put there. I may be seeing it wrong but I only see 4. You also have 2 parts from the 8 Rad that I just don't see either? On the sides by the rear intakes. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-03-2010 Are you talking about the small round parts directly under the 2 windows at the rear of the cabin? I see 4 big ones and 1 small on each side. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - JAWS - 11-03-2010 (11-03-2010, 05:02 PM)dbhs Wrote: Are you talking about the small round parts directly under the 2 windows at the rear of the cabin? I see 4 big ones and 1 small on each side. Off he black & white photo from above? RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-03-2010 Here's what I was referring to. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - JAWS - 11-04-2010 Yep that Starboard side picture shows 5. From the picture taken above the Shuttle I only count 4 on the Portside. It might just be the angle, but if you look at the top view I can only see 4. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-04-2010 I see what you mean. The last smaller one is probably obscured by the canopy lid. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - JAWS - 11-04-2010 Maybe. I need to check that now. I was sure it was missing 1. Now I look at the angle of the photo I admit I could be wrong. got any Portside screen caps? RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-04-2010 I need to check the screencap pics at home tonight. The battlebuck pic has 5 on the port side (for what that's worth). I do have screen caps of the port side that should be clear enough to show this. Edit - Here's this shot... http://www.studioscalemodelers.com/forums/attachment.php?thumbnail=1462 RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-04-2010 Here's the best screen cap I have showing this area. Looks like it's the same as the starboard side. This issue keeps reminding me of the "4 lights" STNG episode. You know the one..... RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - JAWS - 11-05-2010 Ha funny. I just posted that same screen cap seconds ago but mines monochromed for some reason. Haven't got the hang of the screen cap thing yet... Yep it looks to be there. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-07-2010 Meanwhile, back at the Colonial Ship Yards..... Construction is officially complete. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - JAWS - 11-08-2010 Nice Dougy. I also just noticed a mistake I made with the Leo part that sits centre canopy... Told you would be done before me. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-08-2010 We'll see about that but I do intend on getting it done soon. I got the last of the parts primered up today. Now I need to figure out the colors. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-13-2010 AAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrggggggggggghhhh !!!!! My paint didn't show up today... No painting on this this weekend. Maybe start something new ???? hmmmmmmmmmmm.......... RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - 427 Cobra - 11-13-2010 I feel your pain, brother! I had to wait two weeks for the glue I need to show up at the local hobby store. I've waited, and waited to get this beast of mine done so long that I wonder if I'll ever live long enough to finish it, or any of the other things I've started, but stopped working on for one reason, or another! Maybe I should just start on a monday, and see how long it takes me to finish all my models? That's what you could do. Sometimes we have to take our minds off what we love to keep our sanity until we can come back to it. I just can't get motivated to do it. I'm beginning to wonder if immersing myself in these modeling forums so much with other peoples' work has inspired me to get anything done faster? I guess we'll know this monday. This looks great so far, Doug. Don't be like me, and get distracted, then forget about it, and look at it for seven years wondering where the time went! I still have a Cadillac that's calling my name. I just need the paint for it. I guess it's time to make a list of all the things that need to be finished, and what supplies/materials it takes to do it. ~ Cobra Chris

RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - Wombat - 11-18-2010 Looks pretty damn good from here, nice bit of work again. So,how much fun was it in the end gluing all those landing gear pieces on? I think i'll be pretty damn happy if mine turns out looking that good! New project, surely a Battlestar comes before a Basestar, right??
RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-18-2010 Thanks Phil. Yeah - the landing gear were a pain to glue up. I'm sure something will get knocked off before it get finished but that's the way it goes. My paint is supposed to show up tomorrow so I'll get the colors figured out by this weekend for sure. I've got a few other projects in mind before either one of those guys..... RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - 427 Cobra - 11-19-2010 I'd make as much of those landing gear from aluminum as possible for durability. I don't know if these originally were on the studio model, but I don't see why not - this was the norm at the ILM shop back in the day. All small parts were made from metal to keep them from being broken off, and it was easier to make things from scratch than styrene parts. It was also easier to make more complex designs that could withstand weight, and with metal it was easier to make sharp edges between parts which are more refined, and more convincing than bulbous, gloppy rounded, almost shapeless recycled parts. You can control quality much more than with plastics way back when! I can't wait to this in paint, and decals. It'd be nice to see a star screen backdrop behind this with the lights on inside the cockpit. ~ Cobra Chris
RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-19-2010 I did the vertical tubes with aluminum and everything else is kit parts. There's no part of the landing gear that seem functional or realistic were they to be full size. I think when the modelers were doing the original they went for a general look in keeping with the rest of the ship. There's no way that the landing gear on the model could support the weight of the model unless the entire assembly was cast in metal as a single piece. There just isn't enough surface are for the weight to be transferred through the separte parts as they are assembled. There's barely enough surface area for the glue to hold them together without any weight on them. I'll definitely be doing some composites of this with a star field background. Maybe overlay this onto some screen shots to see what might have been in high resolution. My paint arrived today so I'll be working on the colors this weekend. I'll probably need to order more paint once I have the colors figured out. We'll see. Getting close. I also got a bulk box of disposable plastic pipettes for measuring/mixing paint. The ones testors sells are really expensive. I found these on a science supply store. 400 for about $20. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - 427 Cobra - 11-19-2010 I meant the ILM/Apogee guys used these because they didn't want the parts broken off. I understand what you mean. This is more authentic to the original anyway. Great score on those pipettes! I need some, but I need to get more plastruct this weekend, so I'll look for some then. I hope I can get some for a good deal - usually I only find these on ebay in quantity for a reasonable price. ~ Cobra Chris

Unfortunately it is the way it goes sometimes, even with being extra careful it still happens. The contact area is the biggest issue though right, there just isn't much at all and i know you mentioned this previously that it would be something that may be a problem. Still what you've come up with looks PFG mate and HOPEFULLY it'll be staying that way! ![]() Great news on the paint arriving there, bout time!Look forward to seeing that colour splashed on at last.
RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - 427 Cobra - 11-19-2010 Hey, Doug. I don't know exactly what your plans for this are, but I'd just mount it from the bottom so you can see as many of the details, and greeblies unobstructed. With all the hard work that went into it, I know that you'll be proud of all the decals, paint, and all the research time you've put into this to make it what it is. This is something that you'll want to enjoy for a lifetime. I know that it's also something that has small parts that can be broken off, so it'll have to be displayed somewhere that is permanent, and not accessable to small hands, or big hands that aren't careful, or to be trusted. It's too bad that no one makes a six inch version of this just for the office - I know you wouldn't want to display this one there! It's still a great conversation piece that should at least have a dust cover. ~ Cobra Chris
RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 11-20-2010 Good points, Chris. What i have in mind is an acrylic case with a mirrored base so the details on the bottom can be seen in the reflection. I'd also like to make the base and case just big enough that I can rotate the model to a side mount so i could put it on the wall or on a table with the same case. I just need to work out the dimensions for it and have it fabricated RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - 427 Cobra - 11-20-2010 You can get a big enough sheet of mirrored acrylic from http://www.pickguards.com This is a website dedicated to guitars, but you can get some amazing pickguard material that isn't cut. I use this for all kinds of projects. ~ Cobra Chris
RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 06-01-2011 I've made an updated set of decals for the shuttle that I'll be making available for sale. See here for more info: http://www.studioscalemodelers.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=1169 RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - Wombat - 06-01-2011 Nice!! How bout a shuttle update as well???
RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 08-13-2011 Hi guys, I finally got my decals on the shuttle. Looking the part now with the insignias on. I hooked up the lighting and did a little test with the tin foil inserts in the engine bells to see how it would look. I'm looking forward to getting the weathering started this weekend. Thanks for looking. -Doug RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - darkimmitator - 08-13-2011 Outstanding job . The weathering will be the icing on the cake . RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 08-15-2011 Thanks !!. I just mounted it on a bigger base so I can spin it around for weathering and painting. I'll be starting that in a few minutes..... RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 08-15-2011 Thanks !!. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 08-19-2011 Hoping to get some pics posted tonight of the first pass on weathering. As I said on the Cylon forum...this thing's got more nooks and cranies than an English muffin. Weathering is going to take a while.......... RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - Wombat - 08-21-2011 Cough, Cant see em??? Looking good there, Doug! I know what ya mean about the weathering taking some time on this one. Any progress to show? I'll be interested to compare how weathered you do yours in comparison to mine. We both know there isn't much in the way of refernce for this subject that shows the weathering very well. I've been useing some artistic license as it's about all i could do. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 08-24-2011 Thanks for the kind words and feedback everyone. I really appreciate it. I think I have the weathering done now to the level I want. It looks quite a bit darker and more weathered in person than in these pics. The darker areas had a bit too much contrast in the first pass so I went over the whole thing with a medium gray pastel pass that evened it all out. This also had the added benefit of toning down the blue-gray panels which seemed a bit too blue to me. I'm really happy I got this kit - kudos to Mike, Sean, and Ryan for their efforts making this happen. It was a pleasure to put together and will be a great display piece. A few notes here and there: I wanted this one to have some rusted areas along the panel edges and greeblies and used the technique that REL posted a few months ago using powered pastels in thinner. It worked great but after the thinner dried the colors really popped-out and the rust was way too orange and too bright. I removed quite a bit of that and went over it with a browner rust pass which was still too dark and then toned that down further with the pastel work. I love the blazing engine lights. The foil inserts in the engines really make this effect work. It's far better in the pics than in person but I guess that's what mattered for the filming models. These lights are 5watt, 12v halogen bulbs. The internal armature and the stand I made really helped with working on this. Between the antenna on top and the landing gear it's really impossible to set this down without damaging it. The antenna were glued on after weathering but the landing gear had to go on first. Even though as a display piece the exposed wiring seems a little out of place but I wanted to stay true to the studio model and make the electrical connections functional. It always seems to have a frown....reminds me of a sad clown. The foil inserts without the lights on. I glued the foil onto some stiff paper and then cut these into cones that would hold their shape a bit better inside the engine bells. Thanks for looking. -Doug RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - darkimmitator - 08-24-2011 Awesome job Doug ,simply outstanding !!! Really diggin the lights , adds dimension and life to the sad clown . Now I want one !!!!! RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 08-25-2011 (08-24-2011, 10:08 PM)darkimmitator Wrote: Awesome job Doug ,simply outstanding !!! Really diggin the lights , adds dimension and life to the sad clown . Now I want one !!!!! Thanks, Kenny. Definitely pick one of these up if the kit gets released again. Definitely worth the $ and the effort when it's all finished. My last challenge is to get it mounted and out of the way before I damage it. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - JAWS - 08-25-2011 Nice Dougy. Good work all round. Soo onto the Movers now ay? RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 08-25-2011 Yes, sir ! I'm getting an armature made similar to what Phil did and the welder said it is finished today. I need to pick it up this week so I can start that this weekend. I also just received the Space 1999 Ultraprobe Command Module studio scale kit today. That's a fun little studio model and will be fun to do. A lot simpler than the movers so I'm wondering if I should do that one first instead. I'll start a thread for that after I get some pics and my replacement kit parts arrive. Hopefully soon. RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - Wombat - 08-25-2011 Well there ya go, finally one of the little group of Shuttles we have here is finished. Bet thats a good feeling there for sure, well done mate! The weathering has been an issue for me and to what point to take it. Your approach is very subtle looking compared to what i've achieved yet under bright light mine would look similar to yours i would think. I'm sure to your own eyes it is quiet a bit more weatherd looking than the pictures are showing as you mentioned. For a flying brick that resembles a sad clown, it looks pretty good! LOL Congrats again my friend! RE: BSG Shuttle GAL356 - dbhs - 08-26-2011 Thanks, Phil. It does feel good to finally have this one done, that's for sure. The weathering was pretty challenging. It really looks a lot darker and more splotchy in person than in these pictures. That was even more so before going over the whole thing with a medium gray pastel. The rust was a headache as well and went through several corrections before it was done. Definitely a good learning experience. I'll see if I can get the weathering in to show up in some pictures more like it does to my eye and show you what I mean. I do like how it turned out in these photos. I think it may get even more washed out with brighter lights for the final photos. Not sure when I'll get to that. Thanks, again. |
