Yeah I'm building her the same way ILM did, the top superstructures are a separate assembly, this assembly is screwed to the hull (and can be removed of course).

Yeah I reproduced all the hatches, the roof plates can be removed to get access to the FO, lights etc !

At first glance I thought these were black. I see they've been sanded to hold paint. I take it these are scratch made with scratch made parts? These look great, Julien!

How is the chamfer done Julien? It can't be milled, because it wouldn't get into that inside corner?

Yeah Chris you're right that's clear acrylic on a black background (to show the scribbed lines) and I sanded the top for painting purpose but also because Cyril didnt have 4mm thick acrylic plate so he used 5mm and milled the top, I just had to sand to get it smooth ! Then I just added the styrene chips and the accurate kitparts.

Yeah guys, that's milled... and you're right those inside corners can't be done by milling... actually the corner is rounded so I used my X-Acto and files to get straight corners. I'll post tomorrow a picture of the untouched parts.

You did it the right way, Julien. I figure this was done mostly by hand once cut from acrylic sheet. It looks very good! I love the look of it after it's been assembled, I just hate the lengthy process it takes to get it there. I don't blame anyone who's scratch made their own kits, and not wanted to do it anymore! The scribe lines a perfect, and always hard to fix once they're messed up. I love the machined look to this, it's perfectly straight, and professional looking.

Once again I've tried to be as accurate as possible when scribing the lines and gluing the styrene chips, but it's hard to be 10% dead-on, some areas are not clear.

There're 223 (I like this number :p) styrene chips and I take about 2 min to figure the location, lenght and width of a chip, cut it, sand it and glue it in place. Do the maths ! I don(t know how many styrene chips will be on the whole model ! (and I don't want to know :lol).

The first pic is to show I received my plates, I had to sand smooth the top and the edges. was easy and quick, the trickiest thing was to get sharpe wedges where they were rounded.

That is impressive just on its own. I feel worried for you moving that beast. Moving the Battlestar was so stressful & it has no where near the amount of work on as that monster. Good luck Julien & thanks for the update.

I need to fill some seams lines, but I'm happy with what I ended up.

Each guns is made of 5 parts, this parts, 2 guns supports and the 2 guns (which are kitparts, not castings).

Just a small update :

The 3 first pics are assemblies which goes in the engine area. I need to build them before starting to build the rear bulkhead to be sure of every measurement ! Some parts are hard to find, those are mainly the large piping parts. The small ones were done with kit sprues which will be also very challenging to find the good ones (and probably impossible Wink

).

KB, actually there are 4 patterns (I gonna start the fourth one today) + the old pattern they did for ANH (ANH ISD trenches and Y-Wing neck, the 8 rad chassis assembly). The 4 patterns are used all along the trenches 5 or 6 times each. The 8 rad assembly is used 2 or 3 times I believe, havent counted tbh yet tbh ! Big Grin

Wow thats a nice insight J. Thanks. Those Aircraft Carrier baskets sure look close to that missing part on the Devestator Bridge Face.....(The ribbed pieces on the Antenna are confirmed scratched)

I've started the fourth and last pattern they made for the 8 footer :

This one is hard to nail because each of the casting is hidden by several kitparts they added to superdetail the trench, which is not the case with the other pattern casting which are easier to ID.

I've also started to make the patterns they made for ANH (used on the ANH ISD and Y-Wing). They reused those pattern on the TESB ISD and on the 32" MF.

This is unreal.

I've never seen those photos of the original model and I really like the look of the blue color that seems to be washed into the recesses along the side trench. I've never seen anyone try to duplicate that paintwork in their model. Any chance you'll be doing that?

Well to be honest I think it's a trick of the cam...

The guy who painted the original told me they primered her first with dark gray then sprayed the whole thing with spray cans of white. I think what is looking blue in the pic is the dark gray color showing through where the white didnt hit the model !

Interesting. It's a very cool effect in any case and even more difficult to duplicate if that's the case.

I'm not too worried about that, that's just like overspray of white over black and you get the result naturally because of the greeblies, undercuts etc... I'll just spray additional touch up of black in the undercuts to be sure everything is covered (hard with a spray can), as for the white, it will be easy !

Im more worried about the subtle aging they did with airbrushing several shade of gray to break the bright white color... And the panelling job !! I cant remember how many rolls of masking tape I used on my 3' 1/2 ISD but it was a tedious work... and I never had the time (or the will :p) to draw all the penciled lines lol

I've been away from modelling for a while now (wedding, my job and 2 baby cats Smile

) but I finally managed to allow me to find one whole day to work a bit on the Star Destroyer.

No major update though, I reworked one area of the superstructures :

Then I finished the roof... (scribbing, styrene squares and I added some more structures inside the model to avoid any sagging, unlike the original model).

Looks like Tamiya original tooling 1/700 Shinano to me, right Julien? In fact, the piece where the yellow arrow starts looks like the other end of the same piece turned 90Ã‹Å¡.

Still out of town but I managed to bring with me a box of the Tamiya Enterprise !

I've been able to work on some parts of the hull.

I've started with the front plate, using the kitparts I drew the shape and tried to match as close as possible the panel lines.

Now that my 4-footer, ANH SD is nearly completed, I was wondering how Julien was doing with his 8-foot ESB SD. I know this project is far more complex than mine, and will take much more time, but I look at what he has done this far and I am always amazed and in awe!

I moved to my new house next week but I havent moved the ISD yet. I have to set up my shop first which should take some time !

Unfortunatly all the plywood sheets I bought for the ribs are warped (there was a lot of humidity where they were stocked) so Im good to crack another $150 of plywood. Rolleyes

I really need to get the time to start the inner structure, cant do anything more until it's done. :/

I think you have time to build a fourth ISD Rick ! Big Grin
