Some more progress for ya guys. The Galactica now has two bay caps for the first time. I have to add the C-channel detailing around the end piece casting to hide the gaps and add all the little chips, but it's nearly there.
Then I have to build another illuminated bay interior, what a job that is but at least I can copy the other one!

The good news for me is that this is the end of major construction on the model! Aside from a non-canon second bay interior, it's all detailing from here on. Well, apart from hundreds of fibre optic windows, light sources, wiring loom, running lights, landing light LED boards....easy. Anyway, the enjoyment is BUILDING models, not really sitting back and looking at them, right?

Looking fantastic! I know how much of a pain those caps are i recently finished 2 of them for Charles's client and they had to be perfect and ready to detail without all the tee bar and chips on them. Charles can be a real slave driver over filling gaps
I really think that your landing bay caps make the ship look finished now!
I love the last 2 picture's especially looks superb!!!!

Thanks guys, the encouragement is always appreciated.
I forgot, there is some construction still to go, the inner bay trenches. The front halves forward of the cross arm are OK to build and seal up the bay, but I'm not sure if I need to keep the rear section open for now until the bay interior diorama and electrical are sorted. I'm thinking of making the trenches as pop out modules somehow, so I can get access to the interior at any time. Damn there have been some engineering issues to figure out on this build over the years! It's so cool that no two projects are exactly alike as we go about these problems in our own way.

Your Right on the mark with noticing the engineering differences , Mike . The differences in the engineering makes them unique to the builders . Almost like fingerprints . Very cool to see all the different styles and answers to the engineering challenges .

I can still do them but probably not until after the first of the year. I'm in the middle of a move again but setting up a more permanent workstation finally. If memory serves, the Galactica nameplate decal is exactly the same font size as the "GAL356" decal on the shuttle so modifying what i did for that shouldn't be too difficult.

It would be good to get a bunch of decals made at once since it's a single sheet minimum order and it's too expensive for just a couple of decals on a sheet. Does the "galactica" name decal go on both sides of the ship or just the port side as seen on the show? Are there any other decals on the G? I don't remember seeing any but I would be surprised if there were little ones hidden all over it like the shuttle was.

Hi Doug, yeah, the Galactica name was on both sides. Pegasus was glued over the top on the port side only, but it would be good to have two of each name on the list.
No other decals needed on the model, but the red stripes everywhere would be nice instead of painting them. That would be too tricky to bother working out!Mike

Hi guys, had a nice sunny weekend here, but got to the bench on Saturday night adding more fine details to the bay end caps.
I've noticed some inconsistencies in the detailing on the original. There is a shot in the show which shows the shuttle flying into the port bay. Some of the greeblies on the entrance surround are from the 88mm kit, yet when looking at the photo reference, both bays are similar. Why or how this detailing was changed after filming is a mystery. I mean, why bother?
I usually go for original detailing, but decided to make both as they are today to make the model look neater. Once again, there is barely a correct greeblie on these, but they really are tiny, tiny parts and I think it looks really close. Once someone (Phil
) IDs the parts, I may change them, but overall I'm quite happy with the way things are looking.[attachment=15233]

The only CR resin parts used were the lower ramps. I only had to remove about 1 or 2mm from the width to make them fit, so my custom entrance surrounds are pretty close in size. It did allow me to create squarer corners for a more accurate look.

I also made the two little buildings above the bay entrance. What you can't see is that they are attached to the access hatch and neatly covers the panel gaps. It took a lot of careful sanding to get them to sit like they are glued on I can tell you! In the pics, the port hatch isn't quite sitting down correctly, but you get the idea.

Thanks guys, they really were fiddly detailing work.
I've worked out that most of the tiny details on the upper face of the surround piece are little AA guns trimmed down, maybe Yamato. I used Prinz Eugen parts, but they look OK. The tan parts are cut down tank tracks.

Just checking that my thread is still here and dusting off a few cobwebs.
After an amazingly busy summer with our wedding and getting back from the honeymoon cruise on Sunday night, I oiled up the rusty hinges and forced the door to the hobby room open. Yep, the work bench is fairly tidy and the Galactic had minimal dust on it ready for its annual massive building session. I'm planning to finally build in the inner bay trenches in aloooominum C channel like the outers and get the bays sealed up. Hopefully I can use flexible electrical connectors to allow the bay interiors to slide out. Also have to build in the second aluminium L channel bay interior cradle, which also helps to strengthen the bay underside. I have a few lighting ideas for the bays which might throw the plan out the windows, but I really need to get back into it!

OK, it's been on hold again since November due to an extremely busy year with a few things, but I'm back!
I just spoke to Phil and told him I'd post up some pics.I've built in the starboard bay inner trench area, using aluminium C channel the same as the outers. It really strengthens the bays which have almost zero internal supports now, but are quite rigid with the use of construction glue also. Should be good for 100 years.

OK with most of the greeblies, a few are substitutes as usual. It's hard to see these areas with the photo ref. in places, but I think it's almost there. One thing of note, it's bloody hard working on the inner diagonal top side when the bay is on the model. Something I would never have considered when building the hull in 1998-99....

Cheers bud, this project is a serious time soaker. I'm going to scratch up the boxes covering the junction network bays and cross arm. Stuffed if I can I'd them and they seem to be different between Apogee and the 8rad parts on the rest pics!

Great to see the dust blown off and you hitting this again. Getting to some of the areas to detail can be a lil challenging on this build once it's together for sure but thats all part of it. Like that trench detailing and actually it's one area that there not too much to it in the way of parts as you've shown so it looks like it details up pretty quickly. Keep at it now that ya back on it, things are looking good mate!!

A few more greeblies added, almost done. I made up the boxes at the junction of the arm and bay. Not quite correct, but they look OK to my eye. The rear arm has been left open for future wiring access and I make no apologies for messy work inside that will never bee seen when closed up!

Cheers guys. There is an Apogee pic showing the boxes, they look like a cut tank hull, but I can't waste too much cash on little details hidden when the model is the right way up these days! Just being realistic in this day and age, but I hate doing it, believe me.

Hi guys, I will get some pics up soon of the bay inner trenches, some of you have seen them on BookFace already.
I've been doing a lot of detective work looking at the DVD footage and there are a lot of missing parts I can tell you. I've worked out a few so far so things are moving along.
One thing I always wondered about were the different details on the port bay entrance seen in the shot of the shuttle flying in and out from the outside point of view. I've noticed that the original kit part detailed bay interiors were still in place for that shot, before it was modified with Andy's matte painting. The outer detail parts and seem to have been changed when the bay interiors were modified to what we see today. I noticed this after seeing Andy's recently posted image of the unused Galactica bay matte painting. Very cool!

Andy's matte painting was installed inside the *starboard* bay. The port bay had everything but the painting. It appears the original interior detail was indeed left on the side walls. . .

So the original interior detail remains? Or did they just add the sidewall ribbing around those parts? What about the back wall?
I've often wondered what was left in there once Andy's painting went in on the starboard side. But the outer detailing on the entrance surround was definitely changed. On my early version, I had those parts on the port bay, just like that FX shot but changed it back to how it looks now.

OK guys, update time again. I've torn out all the original styrene inner bay trenches from 1999 and replaced them with aluminium and Plastruct C channel like the outers I refurbished last year. It's all locked in with CA and construction glue, so the bays are really tight now. I've also opened up the bulkheads in the front halves so I can get my hand in there for possible future lighting ideas. My Dremel is dead and buried, so how to cut holes in the styrene bulkheads? A hot soldering iron will do that! Hey, whatever works huh?
I've been wearing grooves in the BG DVD looking for missing parts. The shuttle flying out and overhead pass scenes show how much is missing from the inner bay areas, a lot. I've ID'd a few, but due to the low res image, I've had to guess a few, but there are definitely a lot of empty spaces that clearly had parts on them. The long, tan 25 pounder parts on the lower edge of the bays were a nice discovery for me, they're plainly visible in the overhead pass shot. Never noticed those before. Somehow I'm missing one of them from my stash, I'm sure I've bought at least 5 of those kits!
