RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 02-14-2010

It should be interesting to say the least Mark, but these things are so cool and the only way to have one is build ya own or pay someone to do it for ya.Thats not an option so it's gonna be one very long drawn out build for ya's all i'm affraid!Sleepy

......LOL.

Ya close,but no cigar mate!!Rolleyes
Now,i use ta watch that show as a kid and i think i even wanted to own a batmobile when i got older. But then i wanted to own a full size Viper also so i guess i really was living in a dream world when i was a kid?Things haven't changed much in 30 years either i'll add although i don't want the batmobile no more!!Huh LOL..

RE: GAL 356 - 427 Cobra - 02-14-2010

That Plaskolite must be real popular - that's exactly what I use for all my masters, and templates now. I used makrolon for years, but this stuff is expensive, and I only used it for industrial applications.

Mate,i really wouldn't know,to me it's just acrylic sheet thats been cut. Some very nice cut's mind you!Big Grin LOL.

OK,well spent a lot of the weekend cutting part's again but i did get to spend a little more time on this build also. Not much has been done really but i did finish off the middle deck with the piping and last part's glued down.I also added a few to the cockpit lid also but that was about it really. It's getting pretty close really that i'd like to finish it up but i'm gonna be torn between this and the other project,i'll just see what happens there.

That looks great,Phil! Of course, you can never get tired of hearing that.

I think I know what this is. If everyone else here's as up on this as you,and I are - they can figure it out too. Wink

Thanks for the link man. I have the catalog, but wasn't sure of the dome type.

Alright Phil,
Another Big G in the drydock ! You can never have too many Battlestars. Just ask the 12 colonies, LOL. Yea , I'm tempted to buy a laser cutter myself, but I'd have to win the lottery first, Smile Once I draw up the templates I'll just cut them from them from MDF, and use the Pattern bit to cut the plexi. Luckily the local Lowes has 3 by 6 plexi sheets as cheap as mail order. Can't wait to see your G take shape. I don't know when I'll ever get started on mine. Still need a lot of kits yet. Cheers,

Joe

RE: GAL 356 - JAWS - 02-15-2010

Phil that is F*&%$#G sick mate! The shuttle looks outstanding you lil bugger! How'd you bend that pipeing?

RE: GAL 356 - dbhs - 02-15-2010

A pipe bending tutorial would be nice. That's something I always struggle with. A single bend isn't too bad since you can cut the ends to length but multiple bends is tough. I find it hard to get the bend to happen in the right spot. Phil, I assume you heated these to bend them. Can you tell us exactly what you did?

RE: GAL 356 - 79 Daytona - 02-15-2010

That looks outstanding Phil !!!!

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 02-15-2010

Wow,thanks once again guys,i really appreciate everyones nice words on this build,it wasn't that long ago i was thinking about boxing it because of the numerous stuff up's i'd done, but i'm glad i haven't as even with a few things out here and there it's starting to look the part of a Colonial Shuttle.

OK,Mike yeah it could be used for that but i hope ta use it for it's real purpose and you outa anyone knows exactly what that'll be.It's getting real close to a start finally, and tomorrow night i'll have the final piece required to start some assembly at last.

CC,i think they all know what shape that is,people just like Razzing,i know i'm one of em mate!!

Joe,thats sounds like it'll work for cutting the Plastics,it'd be interesting to see still just how much a cutters would charge to create some files and do the cutting for you still.Even if you didn't get it done it'd be nice to get an idea what that would cost still?I'm looking forward this end to starting the build mate, you are right, there can never be enough of these beasts around.I just love the look of it,always have and always will. It'll be like living in a dream land if i ever do get it built and displayed in the lounge room. It's many years from that point but the sooner i make a start it's one day closer ta completion. Finally get my armature tomorrow, what a drama thats been, and it's been going on for months. Finally though it'll be done, and in only two days after they finally made a start today.Wow,it's fucking huge man,it blew me away really seeing it.Can't wait to get it happening bud.As for yourself, you get an armature and some plastics done and the part's aint gonna be that much of a problem.Jase will have almost everything that you'll need in castings pretty soon. It'll be a shit load cheaper than buying the actual kit's for a lot of the part's.I know you know the same as i've learnt,it's an expensive hobby trying to accumilate everything that is required.I think Jase will be do the best he can to make thing's as cheap as possible,so i say get started there my friend!

Alright the piping, well it aint that great,i actually dont like the one i did for the starboard side and am gonna remove it and do another. The bend i did where it meets with the other pipe on the side is too rounded and should be a sharper bend a bit like the port side.
OK,this isn't the styrene rod this is plastruct coated wire,i used this stuff on my CM,it bends really easily.Theres no secret to what i do,it took me ages to do just those two as like Doug mentioned, one bend is fine but getting the second right can be a drama.A lot of the time i just bend with my fingers,a simple tool i know, other times i'll wrap it around a round surface to get a nicer radius on it.Now for this build,i basicly bent the top deck sections first and held in position tight on the deck. Then i just bent the pipe in the direction i wanted to run it so the bend at the top and side was in the right position.I then removed it and bent it a little further past the point it reached while bending it against the shuttle. This wire has a little bit of spring back to it when bent like that. After this it was just mark the pipe where the next bend needed to be and bent that by hand. This stuff is much nicer to work with than styrene, once you've used it you won't look at styrene for such a thing again.

RE: GAL 356 - dbhs - 02-15-2010

Thanks, Phil. If you purchased online can you post a link? Thanks.

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 02-15-2010

Well i'll dig that up for you in just a sec mate. But yeah i got it online and they do this stuff in a couple of different diameters.I think this is the smallest they did from memory.I'll be needing a shitload for the other build and will be getting an order in sometime down the track again myself.

OK,the reason i don't seem to get far with this build is i keep ripping stuff off and redoing it again.I didn't like th elook of the piping that i did that runs from the top deck on the starboard side.so i removed it and bent up a new one.I think this one looks a little closer to how it should be.After getting that on there i decided i didn't like the bottom piping on that starboard side either so i ripped that one off also and did another.
I'm still not 100% happy with it all but i think it looks a bit better than what i had beforehend?

Second attempt and good enough for me!

I'm calling this deck done!!Big Grin
OK,heres the link to this piping. It looks like there is only two size now that i've looked, this is the TB-1 stuff i've been using.
You'll be rapt with the stuff mate!!

RE: GAL 356 - LastBattlestar - 02-15-2010

The tighter radius bends look much better Phil, good job on that mate. Are you doing an order for the TB-1? I'd like to grab a crap load of it too if it's not too late.

It is just so much fun (for me at least) to bend up lots of little pipes! I use large pliers to do the bends: insert the tube sideways so it fits into the serrated jaws and bend over the side. You can create very nice bends this way.

Mike

RE: GAL 356 - dbhs - 02-16-2010

Looks fantastic, Phil. The plastic coated wire seems the way to go.

All the extra effort you are putting into the fine details is really paying off.

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 02-16-2010

Thanks guy's.If i did it correct the first time then i wouldn't be reworking so much. But then, thats not the way i build now as you've all seen over and over again on this build.
Mike, haven't ordered any of that TB-1 yet,i'm a little off needing more yet,but give the word and we'll get some across mate!

RE: GAL 356 - 79 Daytona - 02-16-2010

I agree Phil the second attempt looks alot better

RE: GAL 356 - bwayne64 - 02-16-2010

To everybody needing Plastruct stuff. I found a site thats cheaper than ordering direct. They say up to 60 % off. I checked some prices on stuff I need and it seems right on. They're just a hop skip from me in Atlanta. I also don't think they have a minimum order like Plastruct does. I think they have the plastic coated wire in a couple of sizes. They didn't have the domes I wanted, but they have about 14 pages of stuff. They don't carry the whole Plastruct line, but do have a lot of it. If anybody has good or bad reviews of this company let us know. I'll throw them an order soon and see whats what. Heres the link,

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 02-16-2010

Thats a great link,cheers Joe!
theres some saving there and also on some other stuff i'd expect also.

Thanks man!!

RE: GAL 356 - 427 Cobra - 02-17-2010

The easiest way I know to get bends out of styrene, and soft plastics is to bend them over the back of a pair of NEEDLENOSE pliers. This leaves no kinks,or tooling marks.

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 12-05-2010

Been a long time since i've hit the bench, just haven't had it in me.Still don't fully but, decided after seeing what Doug,Jase and Mark have done with there own shuttle builds to try and pull myself outa this lul.Was time to slap this on the bench again, which i did a couple of weeks ago.

Still not much progress really but some is betta than none, right?Wink

This landing gear was a total PITA for me ta get glued on but,i'm pretty happy with it even it's it's not perfect and bloody glad it is on there at last.
Whats left should be (hopefully) relatively easy to finish off now.
I also had to redo the front mount cover as it was no good how i had it after placing the rod that runs the width on the front there. So a redo of that and the addition of the other part's has that area finised along with the bottom now.Just the very back and a few things on top and this thing is finally ready for some paint. Finally!!!Rolleyes

SARWEEEEET Brutha! Glad ta see you out the Burra mate. Hope your doin ok & look forward o your paint work.

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 12-05-2010

Thanks Jase,taken a while,i know.

See what i can crank out now that i'm back ta sorta playing around again. It was good ta actually make some headway with this one again after so long away from it.Still a little ta do but it's mostly there now.

RE: GAL 356 - JAWS - 12-05-2010

Well i know painting is your strong point so am very keen ta see what you do with this bro.

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 12-05-2010

I'll be trying ta arse me way through that bit like i always do!Confused

But thanks there!Smile

RE: GAL 356 - bwayne64 - 12-06-2010

Hey Man,
That is looking real sweet ! Doin your usual great work, Smile I Love that shuttle. Of course I like all the Tos Galactica stuff. I know what ya mean about not feelin the desire to build. I'm just getting to the place where I feel like doin anything. I have so many models to build, and not enough time. It's looking good there Mate, Cheers,

Joe

RE: GAL 356 - 79 Daytona - 12-06-2010

Outstanding work !!! Phil.

RE: GAL 356 - dbhs - 12-06-2010

Hey Phil.

Let me know what size you want.....

RE: GAL 356 - JAWS - 12-06-2010

Wow that looks sick Doug! I'll take a Large.

RE: GAL 356 - 79 Daytona - 12-06-2010

WOW!! Cool t-shirt.

RE: GAL 356 - dbhs - 12-06-2010

I did this as a little joke but I'm thinking it might be fun to make some shirts up for our group of shuttle builders. Custom tee shirts aren't too expensive on line.

Something to think about for next year.

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 12-06-2010

^
Joke or no joke, that is great!!

I don't know, perhaps it was just me but.it was a very testing time getting those brass uprights glued on?The first one almost had me giving up to be honest with ya but the other three went a little easier for me and in the end it was worth the hassle to get that look.I think if i sneeze anywhere near it though, there a good chance there'll be landing gear laying around! LOL

Thanks for the comments there also guy's and Joe,one thing at a time bud.Well maybe two but don't go bighten off too much as that will just put ya under too much stress bud.I think that Tanker and other small build you have planned is plenty to keep ya outa trouble,or more the case in trouble. LOL
Once you actually start the building side of things your motivation will improve,i have no doubt about that.
Keeping it might be another story, but we'll get to that chapter when it happens my friend.

RE: GAL 356 - bwayne64 - 12-07-2010

That is true my furry friend. We gotta get this place jumpin, like it was before. I try to check in every day. I know I've been slack building wise. I've definitely got a full plate. Been trying to get some money together, to continue on the Big G Journey. I had no idea when I started how much his beastie was gonna cost. I've pretty much given up on getting any super rare kits. They're just way too expensive. I'll have to scratch build those parts, or rely on castings. I just saw some parts for the Entex JPS going for hundreds. And it wasn't even a complete kit, Sad Oh well, I'll get it done. I just need to get motivated to start the body sections. I always worry about building it the wrong size, and having to rebuild her. Still cross checking with the parts I have, and the prints I'm using. Anyhoo, glad to see the forum is moving again. Hope to have something soon to show myself. Cheers,

Joe

RE: GAL 356 - JAWS - 12-07-2010

Not to jump the thread but I will be casting up parts from alot of 'Rare' kits next year once I am resettled. My skills are much improved & can guarantee good castings. I have just been buying up more 'rare' kits over the last month & have some very good donors for everyone.
Glad your back Phil.

RE: GAL 356 - darkimmitator - 12-07-2010

I can vouch for the quality of Jase's castings ( Not Frakin bad at all !!!) Count me in for some of those rare kit castings !!! OOOPs and sorry for jumpin the thread as well !!! Welcome back Phil !!! That shuttle is crankin out to be a sweet addition to your collection ! Lookin forward to seein the paint job you apply to little gem. I don't have a kit of the shuttle (yet ) ,but I would be down for one of those kewl shuttle t-shirts !!! (Xlrg)

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 12-07-2010

You jumping bastards,you!Tongue

Hey thanks there Ken,it's one i'm looking forward to displaying with the rest of my BSG builds without question.Hopefully soon at that.

Joe,as mentioned there are always ways around using the expensive kit's.Personally, castings before scratchin stuff up but even so there will still be some scratchin involved.Having Jase casting is a blessing for the SS G builders and the cost of castings is gonna be nowhere near the cost of some of them near impossible to find kit's mate.Oh,and you did score at least one real prize kit from memory, didn't you?So you are infront of some i'd say!Wink

Good to be back into it again sorta.Still not there fully but things are betta than they have been for sure.

You guy's are great!!Cool

RE: GAL 356 - DarthDuck - 12-07-2010

Just to jump in-

I think you guys should get T-shirts! Was there a name for the Colonial building yards? Seems one possible line of thinking.

Great to see Ya active Phil!Cool

RE: GAL 356 - JAWS - 12-08-2010

I think the Battlestars were built at the 'Scorpion Ship Yards'.

RE: GAL 356 - dbhs - 12-08-2010

That's right for the new series. I can't find any reference on the original series. Sounds good, though.

12 Colonies Shipyards ? Or how bout , Lords of Cobalt Shipyards ?

Thanks there mate!
Even though i still got some other things that need finalizing it's good to be able to spend some time at the bench again.I'm sorta stuck here again as i need something to finish off the back end but once i get that and a couple of magnets i should be finally at a paint stage.Hopefully!

As for the shirt's,yeah me things they are great.I really don't know that anything was every mentioned either in the TOS about such thing's like was just mentioned. But i think the shirt looks PFG as it is.Smile

RE: GAL 356 - DarthDuck - 12-09-2010

Oh? Did I miss that there are existing shirts? My bad then.

So, you're that close to paint now? Won't be long and you can work your magic and put the icing on this cake for us all to enjoy!

Cool

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 12-09-2010

Theres nothing offical on the shirts, just the one Doug did in photoshop or whatever he used.

Yeah,it's getting pretty close ta the paint now, just the rear end between the engines, the engine bells themselves and a few pieces left ta go on top.Got the magnets today so now i can work something to hold the side mount covers in place.Bit by bit it's getting there.
Bloody fantastic seeing ya around again,DD!Cool

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 12-09-2010

So here they are, them side mount covers.Being help by them fantastic rare earth magnets.Theres plenty of movement that can be had to position properly and these shots were just how i put em on.I didn't do anything flash with em in the end as you can see,the same as i always do when it aint gonna be seen really.I had planned something a lil different but then when it came to it,went the simplest way.Dodgy
Magnet on the body and a bit of tin plate on the cover side of things.I did glue a piece of styrene to that tin plate for two reasons. One was to take up the gap between the tin plate and magnet and the other was to have a seperator between the tin plate and magnet. It's was a little too strong the magnet strength straight on the tin plate and i felt it risked one of the glue bonds giving way when removing the covers perhaps over time? Not sure but it feels betta this way anyway. If the magnet does decide to give way from the body i'd hate for it to shoot up the mount pipe,it'd be a real prick ta get out again. But this way the magnet if it does give way will stick to the mount cover itself and worst come ta worse should fall ta the ground.
Anyway,thats it for now,more ta follow,stay tuned!Smile

RE: GAL 356 - darkimmitator - 12-09-2010

Damn cool build there ,Phil . Love the last pic .With some paint and a little photoshop , she's returning to Galactica from Pegasus with Cain and two of Adama's favourite pilots !!!! Ya'll know the episode !!!!! ( my personal fav.)

RE: GAL 356 - dbhs - 12-10-2010

Awesome work.

Get to painting !!!

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 12-10-2010

Thanks there Ken!
Yeah thats gotta be one of the great episodes that one,two Battlestars? What are you babbling about, turn you fool! LOL
One thing different though was in the movie version(Mission Galactica),we got to see a bit more of that shuttle than was seen in the Living Legand episode that aired on tv.Something lil more to geek about i guess?

Cheers there Doug!
Nothing flash like yours but still does they same job in the end.Paint?Well thats at least a couple of weeks away as the kit i wanted for the rear end has only just been mailed yesterday.Still,i've done more this week than i've done in a real long time and i'm enjoying it as well.

Thanks again my friends!!

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 01-09-2011

OK,did a little more with this thing again.Gee it's getting real close now to the primer stage, just a few things remain to be done and i'm at that stage with it.The main area left to do is a couple of things between the engines and the engine bells themselves. There are a couple of other small things also but it's pretty much there.A few things are still not glued onto the body yet either, they'll be painted seperately and added during the final construction of the build.
So heres the cockpit lid now with everything at least sitting on it,bar the cockpit glass it's all done. The glass is cut but i'm still unsure if i'll install it at the end or not.Not sure how i'm going to bond it to the window frame without it misting up from the CA.The way the window frame is the glass will need to be butt glued to the frame mostly.
Anyway,getting closer!!

RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 01-09-2011

Well two updates in the one day. It's been a pretty good one build wise on this.I'm happy to say bar the two parts i'm hunting for this is basicly ready for some primer.Got the stuff on the back along with the engine bells as you can see and thems were pretty much the last pieces.I fitted some foam inside the Saturn stage before gluing on the engine bells. My globes stick through the bells a little to have them not sticking out as far,but there is a problem with light escaping between the bell and Saturn stage through the stage joining cutout. So i was hoping this foam would do the trick and fix that problem, which it it did.
I then decided to just make sure the lighting was still working, been quite a while since it's been run.Too bad if it wasn't though as this ones sealed up good, but again no worries, still working sweet.
These halogens to me really throw a light that captures that screen look. They don't look quite that good to the eye,but for pictures...Cool

So a good day it's been and this is pretty much 99% ready for primer, now just them last part's??

Help!!!Confused

RE: GAL 356 - darkimmitator - 01-10-2011

One word Phil , SWEET !!!!!!! Lovin the lights too . The way that warm glow of lights emits from the cabin area , is very much like a screen cap .!!!!
