RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 09-10-2012

Thanks Jase . You know ,I thought you were doing a hell of a job on your build and would love to see you back on it . I am sure alot of others feel the same . You were also clippin along a pretty darn good pace with your build as well when you were working on it !! Sure kept me motivated . And that shiny stainless steel armature was SWEET !!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - t2sides - 09-11-2012

That is looking AWESOME Ken!! Very nice job, and great updates!! Ahh, brings back a ton of memories!! Yeah, the chips are a lot of work, but so rewarding in the end, and I always loved the scribing part.

You look to be really hitting the mark on this, keep up the excellent work and the sweet updates!!!

-Sean

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 09-11-2012

Thank you for the kind words Sean. Means alot coming from a seasoned veteran of studio builds !! If I may be so bold , what did you use for a power source to light your battlestar ? I am getting ready to tackle the engine lighting so I can tie in the plascore honeycombs and difusers so i can finnish off the engine section .

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - t2sides - 09-12-2012

Thanks Ken,
On my G, I wound up running 120 VAC main power into the ship. I then put in a power distribution strip that wires split off to provide power to:
1. 3, 9VDC power supplies. The 9VDC provides independent power to the 3 MR16 LED lamps that lights all the fiber (1 placed in the neck, 2 in the body). The 9V also provided power to the LEDs for the rear middle engine and the LED strips on the head and engine.
2. A 120VAC line provides power to the two main engines - LED Flood lights (PAR20)
3. A 120VAC line provides power to the landing bay circuit board for the flood and running lights. (Built in DC converter)

It got a little cramped in there around all the fiber, but it worked out nicely.

Hope that helps,
-Sean

I must say that these were a challenge to build . Alot of intersecting angles !!

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - LastBattlestar - 10-03-2012

That looks fantastic Ken, the proportions are really good. They are very tricky to build eh? I've never seen all the parts cut and laid out like that. I always build on the fly. I was trying to describe them to my dad the other day, how to make a cone with 15 sides reducing to the end with 7!

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - Wombat - 10-03-2012

Man, that is some nice work!!!!

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 10-03-2012

Thank you gents . always appreciate the encouragement !!

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 10-05-2012

Does anyone know if there are parts maps for the landing bay end caps for the studio scale battlestar ?

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - LastBattlestar - 10-05-2012

No map that I know of mate.

Did you get the correct T strip for the detailing? Very important to get the right look. Which reminds me that I owe Phil a few packs. 3 packs will do both front and rear caps if you are careful.

Mike

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - Wombat - 10-05-2012

The same here, no maps of the front caps that i know of either.

Guess heres you're chance to do some of this area and see what turns up? Can't hurt and there is more than one member here that has already detailed those babies already. Hopefully they can all chim in a bit and we'll see where that gets ya.Smile

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 10-08-2012

For the tee strips ,I used 1/16 or 1.6mm abs tee by plastruct .

Beautiful.
You have done a great job of this build Ken.
Again I must say how envious I am of you lot.

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - Wombat - 10-08-2012

Nice straight clean work there Ken!!

Looks bloody fantastic!!

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - LastBattlestar - 10-09-2012

Talk about deja vu! Go the styrene builders! I quite like adding detail strips and bending up the TB1 pipes in a sick, twisted way.Smile

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 10-31-2012

The ol beast and I just got back from Halifax where we were asked to display the build progress of the Pegasus for Halcon sci - fi convention . Had an awesome time again as usual . The battlestar even had a few seconds of exposure on the local news and even an episode of the Space channels , Inner Space .

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - LastBattlestar - 11-01-2012

Cool pics Kenny, she's looking spectacular amongst all those little toy models.Tongue

I was hoping to display mine a few weeks ago but have had a hella-crazy couple of months at work and just couldn't get around to organising it all. As you well know, it's a logistical challenge to move one of these things. Do you have a travel crate made up for it?

Phil and I also talked about showing both of our models at the show to really give them a double punch of hardcore studio scale goodness One big problem was the rapid pace of removing everything at the end of the show. My G won't fit in my car, well, it does with the rear seats folded down but not in a crate and we could only take one home at a time in Phil's ute, so it's a tricky thing to do. Next year we'll give it some serious thought. The models will be much more complete also!

Thanks for the pics, keep posting away!

Mike

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - t2sides - 11-01-2012

Wow, that's outstanding Kenny!! I think it's awesome you displayed this in progress for a show, what a great idea and exposure to folks of what goes into building one of these. Awesome!

-Sean

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - dbhs - 11-01-2012

It's great that you were able to show it off at the con like that. It certainly commands attention over the other models.

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 11-01-2012

Thanks gents .
Sorry I didn't get more pics uploaded tonight . was catching up on some much needed sleep . will upload the other pics tonight .

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - Wombat - 11-01-2012

Sleep??? C'mon now, Harden The Fuck Up!!Tongue

Bet it was a big weekend for ya though. Showing something like that would be no easy task. Plenty of stress in moving it i'm sure but then what a fantastic sight for everyone who attended the show. You may have already planted that seed in some poor soul from doing so.. LOL Man it's really looking great though which is all of your doing.

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - padawan-builder - 11-03-2012

Ken,
Really nice job on the front cones. I am currently on my 3rd attempt. They are deceptively hard to get just right. Hope to have some pics soon, but they aren't as nice as yours. Great job.
Curious on the T strips. How did you orient the ones on the front edge? It is hard to tell from the pics and the pics of the original are even harder to see. Is the base of the T pointing straight ahead or outward? If that even makes sense...

Keep them updates coming,

Mel

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 11-03-2012

thanks Mel
I put the center point of the t strip facing forward and cut the ends to match the angle of the mating panels . The size of the t strip I used was 1/16 . You are right , these are a tricky part of the build with all those intersecting angles !!!

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - Wombat - 11-07-2012

Nothing like a SS Battlestar to draw some attention!!

Not too sure on that Silent Hill Girl though, perhaps direct her to a Galaxy far far away next year, thats if she turns up.. lol

Looking real good.
Thanks for the update.

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - Wombat - 08-02-2013

Just catchin up on things and it's nice to see some progress on that beast of yours. Good stuff there Ken it's looking better and better with each update as them greeblies go on.

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 08-03-2013

Well look who came outta the burrow !!!! Phil !!! Where ya been mate ? Thanks for the kind words . Now lets see some updates on that Gem you have been building?

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - Wombat - 08-03-2013

Had a few things going on but mostly the motivation for it just hasn't been there. Your build is coming along nicely and is a little inspiration right there. The only update on mine is i uncovered it the other night for the first time in i don't know how long. Covered it over again but it's the first time i've looked at it in months. Now i just need to start gluing again and get some more done on it as you have been doing.

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 08-03-2013

Well it's good to see ya pokin around in here again , and we all look forward to seein ya get back at the ol girl and postin some battlestar build goodness . I could use some inspiration myself !!

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 08-14-2013

Just a small update on a part that is seperate from main bulk of this build . That being said this is still a huge part of the build . It is the landing bay end caps !! First engineering the fastening system ,then skinning in the shape ,detailing the surfaces, engineering the interior , and then coming up with a source of backlighting , and chase lights . I had to start this part sooner or later !!!

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - star-art - 08-14-2013

I feel your pain! Richard2001 and I are dealing with this as we speak. It is a surprisingly complicated area to build because so much is going on in such a small space.

Looking good so far! Smile

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 08-14-2013

Thank you Charles . Words of encouragement means alot coming from you !!
Complicated and confined really sum up this portion of the build , and Yours and Richard2001's update of this area is a huge help in getting it sorted out !

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - Wombat - 08-14-2013

You're darting all over the place on me, thought you was gonna let me catch up with some things??? Obviously not!!

Great to see Ken and any progress on any area is good progress with this subject. Looks like they are coming along nicely there already and i'm sure they will look just as stuinning as the front caps you built when done. Good to see you are still having fun with it all and i enjoy seeing where you are at with things myself. Helps me with the motivation i've been lacking for a bit.

Keep at it mate!!

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - LastBattlestar - 08-14-2013

Nice work Ken. It's incredible how much work and detailing goes into just one of these end caps, especially when you're building from scratch, eh? It might pay to anchor the mounting tubes with epoxy just to be sure once the side walls are on.

SEAN C mentioned that he was looking at custom flasher boards for mounting under the bay floor. I'll see if he is still on the case.

Which reminds me that I still have another end cap to build for myself. Man, what a process that is!

Mike

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 08-14-2013

Thanks gents .
Phil what led to going to end caps being started was , i was detailing the landing bays and I stopped at the back side because I knew the model was going to be handled alot with all the test fitting and engineering to produce the end caps . i just didn't want to risk breaking off or loosing any details . I think that I have a long way to go to catch up to your progress !! lol

Mike , as hard as these things are to construct , i am really enjoying the challenge . You have allmost got to think 5 steps ahead as you are building these little darlings !! The tubes won't go anywhere as the end has a hole drilled down the center with a small split pin down through the hole and peened over on each side . There is a styrene wall on either side of the pin so the tube can't move forward or backward . The worst that it can do is spin in the holes of the wall , but it is a pretty tight fit there .
Not sure if I am going to use a flasher board under the floor or run fiber optics from the floor, through the landing bay , up through the rear arm and into the main body to a row of chaseing led lights .Not even sure yet what to put on the inside back wall .are there copies of the original matte painting available out there ?

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - star-art - 08-15-2013

I would probably recommend using FOs. The circuit boards are expensive, a royal PITA to install due to the limited space and they absolutely must be serviceable. That means building in a way to get them back out again. Also, boards will generate at least some heat. If they get warm enough, a cooling fan may be required.

I had to make a slight modification to the end cap bottom in order to fit the circuit boards. This resulted in an ever-so-slight variation from the original. It's subtle, but if you know what to look for, you can see it. This would not be necessary if the board was not installed.

RE: The Beast ( BATTLESTAR PEGASUS ) - darkimmitator - 08-15-2013

Thanks for the info on the circuit boards Charles . I was kinda leaning towards the fo's ,due to lack of room under the bay floors .Pretty much made up my mind now with this new insight !!
