1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - MonsieurTox - 03-01-2011 Hey guys, I wanna have some fun with something else than hunting kitparts So Ive started yesterday my full size astromech droid which will be R/C. I'm doind the styrene version with resin parts to save money and weight. And since I'm not planning to R2-D2 it's not worth getting an aluminium dome ![]() I think I gonna reproduce R2-T0 : ![]() Also known as R2-G2 in another scene of TPM : ![]() They said this is not the same droid, I agree there are some differences and maybe in the movie it's not the same droid, but the case is that in reality it is the same droid with maybe some make-up. Ive started by cutting the ring in 3mm styrene : ![]() This job was messy... Fortunatly the router doesnt do styrene dust, it's easier to clean up ! ![]() Actually I was a bit sceptical about the styrene integrity over time. I use to work with styrene and I know that after some years it tends to crack if too much stress on it. That's why I decided to build an aluminium frame which will support all the weight of the droid and all the constraints. No stress on the body nor the legs ! ![]() ![]() It will be a bit heavier than a full styrene droid but that will still be lighter than an aluminium or wooden droid ! Inner skin : ![]() Outer skin : ![]() All my body panels will be closed. Thanks for looking ! RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - kbilly - 03-01-2011 Do you sleep MT? RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - propologist - 03-01-2011 I don't remember if your married or not , if you are you sure don't spend any time with the family..LOL RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - MonsieurTox - 03-02-2011 Thanks guys ! ![]() I'm not married yet Lee, but I will on the 21stof May ! :p RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - propologist - 03-02-2011 yeah get it all done before then , because " family " time always kills the hobbies RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - MonsieurTox - 03-24-2011 (03-02-2011, 01:50 AM)propologist Wrote: yeah get it all done before then , because " family " time always kills the hobbies Dont worry about that ! ![]() Hey guys ! Some progress pics.... I built the aluminium core for the legs. I dont have the right tool to cut the aluminium so I tried to do my best with what I had. Not very good looking... Yeah those arent sexy lol But they cost me less than $20 and they cant be stronger ! I will dress them with styrene, it should do the trick ! Hopefully it wont weight a ton !The Rockler is on its way, I should get it by monday, hopefull the dome will be shipped soon too ! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - MonsieurTox - 04-14-2011 Wow thanks for posting that, your R2 is awesome ! And I like the subtle weathered look ! RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - MonsieurTox - 04-15-2011 Received my dome today... I trimmed the biggest parts and took this part, need some fine trimming, the dome is not glued yet, it's hold by tape !
RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - LastBattlestar - 04-21-2011 I'm just loving this build! I too have seriously considered building a styrene R2- now you have me thinking again, Julien.... Did you scratch all the little vent parts too?I didn't know Phil sold his kit. I was going to measure up all the parts but there were a LOT in there and it scared me off. I should have at least measured the basic dimensions. Oh well. The main problem was the expensive aluminium dome, but I didn't know that styrene versions were available. Very cool. I'm sure that a convincing metal effect could be achieved using two pack metallic paint and brushing effects. Mike RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - JAWS - 04-22-2011 I was at Brafs place on Sunday. One of his mates gave him one. Uncompleted but going to look sweet when done. Blastmaster that is a nice astromech! Julien this going to br great. Looking awsome.... Im jelous.... RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - MonsieurTox - 04-27-2011 Thanks guys !! (04-21-2011, 12:56 AM)LastBattlestar Wrote: I'm just loving this build! I too have seriously considered building a styrene R2- now you have me thinking again, Julien.... I havent scratched all the vent parts, the front ones are resin, I will just scratch the pocket and side vents ! Don't worry about the measurements, they are standard (they have to be to fit the dome !!) and the plans can be found on the yahoogroup! As for the styrene dome, it's done by the same guys offering the aluminium so it's exactly the same !! I wouldnt worry about the metal effect of the dome, some of the screen used R2 had fiberglass domes (mainly in the new trilogy though) !
RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - JAWS - 04-27-2011 Been doing some research & found Vaders Astromech R4 K5. Black & Gunmetal astromech. Looks tough & would match my new leather couch. Very tempted... RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - MonsieurTox - 04-27-2011 Hehe yes it's nice ! There's so many possibilities, they're all great ! RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - LastBattlestar - 04-27-2011 How much did the styrene dome cost, Julien? Mike RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - MonsieurTox - 04-28-2011 Mike, it's $175 shipped in the US, you can take a look here if you live in another country : http://astromech.net/forums/showthread.php?t=6157 If you want one, you would buy it now because the run is ended, they have some extra and I dont know when they'll do another run, in 1 year or 2 probably ! RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - JAWS - 04-28-2011 Well ive joined up to the astromechbuilders clubs & started doing my reseach. Cant help myself. Wish i hafve bought Phils when i was going to. He had an awsome array of parts. All good. Going to get on the bandwagon & build us a droid. The kids are exstatic. Keep it coming J. RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - LastBattlestar - 04-28-2011 Hah, I joined up today as well! Are you using the same username? It's hard when people change them across various forums. I'll research an R2, but have plenty on my plate right now.Mike (04-14-2011, 11:14 AM)blastmaster Wrote: R2 is looking great, yea I want that Star destroyer, that is a great shot, classic, They are a ton of fun those R2's put a ton of smiles on the kids faces not to mention yours!! I'm deciding between an R2 and a 44" Eagle for my next major project. ![]() Mike RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - MonsieurTox - 04-29-2011 Mike, build both !!! ![]() Guys, I'm under the same name over astromech.net ! ![]() With the panels on : ![]() And for fun :
RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - JAWS - 05-01-2011 Look its R2 DTOX! Lookin good Jay. Thanks for sharing this build here & inspiring us on other projects. RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - Wombat - 05-01-2011 He's looking good there Julien!! These Astromechs are really cool and will make awesome display pieces when done.I don't regret that i didn't keep my stuff although i still think R2 would have looked really cool if i had decided to hold onto it all.Just i don't think i would have ever gotten around to it to be honest. It's only when you see one so well on it's way construction wise, that it sort of has me wondering. Anyway, your build is looking great there and wil be yet another fine piece you'll of added to your collection when done. RE: 1:1 R2-T0 / R2-G2 Astromech - JAWS - 10-05-2011 Any updates MT?
