Hello Everyone.
I was referred to this great forum by my good friend, Charles Adams. He said I would love it here.
My name is Rick Ingalsbe. Charles says there is a collective effort here to build studio scale ANH Star Destroyers. That is something I know a little about. Back in 2003 and 2004 I built 2 of them. One was used in the movie "'77" where it portrayed the filming model at ILM during the making of Star Wars. The other replaced the real filming model in a four year, touring museum exhibit called "Action-An Adventure in Movie Making."

Both of my Star Destroyers were my first and second attempt at scratch-building. Therefore, I knew nothing about the original kit parts used to detail the original model. I just used what I had available to me at the time. Also at that time, all the books and interviews called the Star Destroyer the three-footer. Naturally, I built both my replicas at ... you guessed it, three feet long.
Two years ago I began building my third Star Destroyer. I want this one to be much more accurate in size and detail (though I am not too picky about being 100% exact on details). At this point I have the bridge and superstructure built. I am waiting for more time, money and accurate dimensions before I build the longer-than-three-feet hull.
It is a pleasure to be a part of this forum. I am crazy busy at times, but I will check in now and then to see what's happening here.

Charles mentioned you in some conversations we had.
Am very glad youve signed up.
Your work is amazing & this 3rd effort will be a masterpiece.
Ive been drowning in photos & kits looking for parts on the Devestator & want to build mine as close to the original ANH build as possible.
Have found a few parts also currently missing from the studio model as it currently stands & am on the trail of a few more.

Great site ... and loved the stories about building the models for 5-25-77. I especially like the story behind the escape pod build. If I'm not mistaken, I have the same bird feeder at home. The part looks identical. I'm looking forward to more of your future projects. Post them here if you can.

The Star Destroyer has been my all-time favorite studio model, and for me building two of them has opened up opportunities I never imagined could ever happen to me.
Now I am building a third one. This one is way more accurate in size and detail, yet I am still not 100% committed to making it exactly like the original. Like I told Charles, I'm building A star destroyer, not THE Star Destroyer.
The reason I am doing it this way is for a few reasons... First, the money. Collecting every last kit that was used to detail the original would be WAY more expensive than I am willing or able to do. Second, every star destroyer model built by ILM for the Star Wars films were completely different in details, so I always thought that gave us 'license' to detail ours as we will.
However, having said that, on my third build I thought a good and economical decision would be to have as many of the original kit pieces in the main focal areas of the ship as possible (the bridge and bridge neck, the engines, the docking bay and most of the underside of the hull, and some better known areas of the trenches). For all other details my rule is if I don't have it, can't find it or can't afford it, anything goes. And I usually fill in those gaps with parts that have the same 'feel' to the texture they create.
When I can, I will post photos on a separate thread of my progress so far in an appropriate area of this site.

I like the dedication you have for the Star Destroyer, this is my fav design too (even if I prefer the TESB because I saw TESB first
), your work on your first ISD's was really inspiring was I was building my 3 footer ISD !I will follow your progress with great attention !

I built my replicas in 2003 and 2004. At that time No one seemed to want to attempt it, and the only other person I knew of that built a Star Destroyer was Lasse Henning. Since then, it seems, everyone wants to try it. I think that's great!

Sure you'll have the time of your life here,well maybe not as you already have had that i'd say with what you have been fortunate enough to experience in the past.Jase sent me a link to your site and i really loved reading through the tale of what you have been able to do there.Wow,talk about living some kind of dream.Thats Fantastic and i think everyone here would love to have been in your situation.
Anyway now that you are here,have fun,theres some real talented folk you'll find with the very same intrests as yourself.

Another welcome, Rick. I remember you talking about the movie way back at SB.com. I just read the expanded article on your site and it was a fantastic read with plenty of cool pics to drool over! Hey, if they ever want to shoot the sequel about the Apogee model shop here, Phil, Jase and I are slowly building up a fair collection of studio scale stuff you can use!
I gotta ask, what's happening with the movie? It's been in the can for some time and it looks a lot better than 'Fanboys', that's for sure. Even a DVD release would be great! It's hard to imagine that Gary Kurtz can't get it released. Heck, go straight to the top: George Lucas would probably love a private screening. Just imagine the Lucasfilm logo at the beginning....
