Cylon Raider - Wombat - 11-14-2009

Well,i'm posting this one again as it seems to have disappeared with the change over or something?

This is the V2 Raider that was put out by Mike Salzo. The kit goes together very easily and the casting's were top notch, very crisp.Painted in acrylic's with a custom mix and weathered up with some pastels. This was my first attempt at lighting a kit and i had no drama's with that either.

Thanks for looking.

Ohh the Raider!!
Dude as fabulous as all your other models are this is my favorite one!!
I remember the late night(for me) messaging sessions on paint colors and choices!! Tongue
The colors you finally settled on are perfect!!
Good job man!! Big Grin

RE: Cylon Raider - Wombat - 11-15-2009

Thanks once again mate!
I'm probably the same, out of the few models i've done this one is just plain cool and i'd say my favourite also.
I wasn't that bigger fan of the Raider, till i got this kit, that was.

RE: Cylon Raider - JAWS - 11-15-2009

Mate sorry we lost the first post Phil... But the bigger picture s are damn awsome dude! Now we can really see how frikn good you paint work is! Killer mate.

RE: Cylon Raider - Wombat - 11-15-2009

Hey,thanks once again Jase, and no problem's on the other post mate.
As for the size of the picture's,the board yesterday was posting them large when inserting them or just leaving them as thumbnails for some reason.Still,it's all up and working which is the main thing. You have to expect a couple of bug's while setting all this up my friend.

RE: Cylon Raider - dbhs - 11-16-2009

Thanks for the nice reference photos, Phil.

Fantastic paint job on this. The detail really pops but looks consistent overall.

Beautiful.

RE: Cylon Raider - Wombat - 11-16-2009

Thanks Doug,i appreciate it mate!
That paint took me awhile to get what i ended up with.It seemed as always,i couldn't mix a colour i was totally happy with.Rolleyes
But after however many goes i got this look.Wink

Cheers once again bud!Cool

RE: Cylon Raider - 3d-builder - 11-16-2009

Better than the original bring it up front and shoot it!!
Great work the subtle weathering all over this is off the hook!

RE: Cylon Raider - Wombat - 11-17-2009

Thanks once again dude!

RE: Cylon Raider - bwayne64 - 12-16-2009

Phil, that thing is beautimus ! I love that ship, it's one of my favs. I know you asked this question at the RI. This thing is supposed to be 1/35 scale correct ? If it's not too much trouble, could you confirm the dimensions for me. I have about 12 inches long by 15 inch wingspan. I know you're metric there, so millimeters will work, Smile Cheers,

Joe C.

RE: Cylon Raider - Wombat - 12-16-2009

Thanks Joe!!
I'm pretty pleased with the look of this myself. It would have been nice to have those extra details Doug has thrown on his but i just didn't and still don't have a real lot of Raider reference.Infact there is a part placement error as the the picture's i was using for my reference had this part not quite in the correct spot. But i can't do much about that now.
Anyway, yes it's apparently meant to be 1/35 scale this one in SS.It'd be a big bugger if done in the same 1/24 as the Viper.
Just measured it for you and in your language it's about 13 1/2" long with a wingspan of aroud 17".
It's a nice size, not to big,but big enough to still look pretty cool!

Thanks Man, thats a good size. I was trying to figure out how big it would be in 1/12 scale, like the big viper model, Smile There was talk of that over at the RI. Turns out the wingspan in 1/12 scale would be 49 1/2 inches, WOW ! And it would be 39 3/8 long, WOW, again ! That would be one big sucker, Smile I think I'll let someone else tackle that one, Cheers,

Joe

RE: Cylon Raider - JAWS - 12-17-2009

OOoh that would be so wicked!

Yes it would be awesome, Smile I wish I had it in me to build one. Braggin' rights Forever, LOL.

RE: Cylon Raider - dbhs - 12-17-2009

I still think doing it double studio scale 1:17.5. is more realistic especially given many of the parts are available in Jase's 1/35 Leopold kit.

34" across is pretty big still but possibly achievable in this lifetime.

Yea, everything would have to be scratched in a 1/12 version. If someone had access to a rapid prototype machine, then.... I don't so that leaves me out, LOL. You'd still have to build those Big T parts on top , and that big honkin' Centurion tank section. Doable, but very painful , Smile I would love to see one, even if it won't be me to do it. I could do the body itself, with glass fiber. But the details would make me pull out my hair. Oh well, who wants to take up the challenge, bueller, bueller, Smile Sorry to hi jack your thread Phil. I love your build, it's a sweet rendition. I really like that kit. Maybe when Santa comes, I might get one. Cheers,

Joe C

RE: Cylon Raider - DarthDuck - 12-17-2009

Ah!

This one brings back memories for me!

I think it was just before seeing this and Phil's Viper that I had heard him say he wasn't "much of a painter".

Yup.

It was about this time that I learned Phil is a frakin LIAR!

Tongue

Great to see her again buddy.Cool

RE: Cylon Raider - JAWS - 12-17-2009

Yeah!

RE: Cylon Raider - Wombat - 12-17-2009

Thanks again guy's!
Hi jacking accepted here,ya's are talking Raider afterall.
1/12,that would be just out there,no question!!Honestly,it's the shape of this thing that would just make it mind blowing with those dimensions. It's just a rectangle with some trimmed edges in shape ,so that is gonna be bloody massive.
Still'theres been talk and that can lead to something at sometime?Who woulda thought we'd ever see a 1/12 Viper? It'd make a good pair having a Viper and Raider in the same scale, the closest we got at the moment is a 1/35 SS Raider with a 1/32 Monogram Viper. But 1/12,now that'd be impressive, even if you did have to build an extension on the house to show em!Rolleyes

I'm also very happy to see you on a board again,Don!That it happens to be this one is something for us all to enjoy here. You are someone i'm very happy to call my friend as that's what you are mate!
But Don,you already know,us Aussies don't lie mate,we may happen to bullshit just a lil at times though?Wink

RE: Cylon Raider - DarthDuck - 12-18-2009

Phil,
I have come to realize you Ausies tell stories- but of course, never lie.

Yeah man I remember that also....then I saw the pics of his Viper and I thought "Not much of a painter"
YEAH RIGHT!!
Some people just have a certain style of painting and I could tell one of Phil's models from a mile away!!!
You can tell a lot of thought and planning goes into his paint work...Unlike myself I just let the shit fly and hope for the best!!! LOL!!!
Again great work on this Phil....If you ever get tired of looking at it......
I'll give it good home!! LOL!!! TongueTongueBig Grin

RE: Cylon Raider - Wombat - 12-23-2009

^
Ahhh shucks,thanks mate!!
I'm not sure this one will ever be going to a different home,it's one that i really do like. It's just the Raider itself, the design looks great and the SS size is still impressive to look at!
The sercret can be hidden no more then.

Style = Pure Arse!!Dodgy
Planning = How the fuck am i gonna get that look!!Confused

Generally i just go back to the Style for the planning!!SmileLOL

RE: Cylon Raider - Coffee Addict - 02-04-2010

Beautiful Job! That is my second favorite ship after the TOS Mk I Viper. You definitely did it justice!

Roy

RE: Cylon Raider - Wombat - 02-04-2010

I seem to be saying thanks to you a bit Roy,but thanks again!
Wasn't a big fan of the Raider but this kit changed all that!

RE: Cylon Raider - jon pollock - 05-12-2010

Nicely done, your work is the sort that I use for reference. I built one of these myself and gave it a WWII german ghosted spaghetti camoflage. Same overall color, just shade of grey variations for the camo... looks pretty cool, almost like it belonged to a rogue cylon or something...

RE: Cylon Raider - 427 Cobra - 06-03-2010

Son of a bitch!! How did I miss this thread, Phil? This must've gotten buried under some other threads. That Raider is spot on! Without a doubt, you could've been an ILM modeler back in the day. You'd be a shoe-in if it weren't for CGI garbage taking over the big screen today. This seriously looks as if it were stolen from the Apogee archives!

RE: Cylon Raider - Wombat - 06-08-2010

^^
Thank you Jon and also you there also Chris!

CC,you blow me away with them kind words my friend, unfortunately i don't think the picture's alway show the true story but i appreciate those more than encouraging and humbling word's bud!You know, outa all the build's i've done i actually still like this one the most i think.Theres something about it,i really do like the look and shape of this thing and i'm very happy with what i managed on this. All of this weathering was pretty new to me on this, the only one i'd really done before was a MiM Viper i had.Even now i'm only what, two finished builds since this Raider, the Salzo Viper and the the Movers are all i've done since this one.The Viper weathering is a lil average but the CM turned out pretty good also i think. So it's a bit of hit and miss still really, but th ethe hit's i am pretty happy with!

Cheers again!!

RE: Cylon Raider - JAWS - 12-14-2011

This & your Viper are my two favourite builds of these kits which I now own the Masters for.
Can I please use your pics as the advertising images for my new kits?

RE: Cylon Raider - Wombat - 12-16-2011

I personally think Dougs raider looks better but sure if you want to use the builds to advertise the kit's, thats fine.

btw,Congrats on securing those master patterns, i'm sure there will be a quiet a few happy people ordering them from you. It's good news for the builder that is looking to find either of those two kit's. Some people just jump into SS building with kit's like them, i know i did a few years ago and look how insane i've become since! LOL

Good stuff mate!

RE: Cylon Raider - Darkmoonspirit - 12-23-2011
