GAL 356 - Wombat - 09-10-2011 Well here it is after however long it's been since it was started now. Although i'm not entirely happy with the final out come i'm pleased to have it off the bench finally. The weathering on this one has been a struggle as there hasn't been a lot in the way of useful reference for that part. Least for the time period of this shuttle build which is based on it's early days as best i could. Anyway, nuff babbling, pictures ain't the greatest but still, here it is. RE: GAL 356 - darkimmitator - 09-11-2011 Phil .... Dude .Fuckin luvin it !!!!!!!!!! I got a new screen saver ,I got a new screen saver !!!!!!!! God damn that's beautiful !!!! RE: GAL 356 - Snake Plissken - 09-11-2011 Phil you are a modeling God! RE: GAL 356 - Snake Plissken - 09-11-2011 Phil you are a modeling God! RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 09-11-2011 Thanks for them nice words fella's! Glad you like it Ken,you know it's starting to grow on me here a little more positively also. From 20 feet away it don't look half bad i guess. It was a struggle though this one as i mentioned and this is really just my interpretation of it all. Chris, i think you must have me confused with someone else as i can tell ya i'm far from being any sorta modeling god. Just plenty of that wombat arse going on again. LOL Thanks again guy's!! RE: GAL 356 - darkimmitator - 09-11-2011 Phil , I have said this before , You HIGHLY underestimate yourself ! Your colonial movers , shuttle with boosters , the galactica V1 ,and now this colonial shuttle ,are all a testimate to that fact . Face it buddy .... Your gettin damn good !!!!!!! Ha .ha !! RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 09-12-2011 Down here talk like that would come from an artist, a bullshit one usually! LOL Ken, you are very kind with them words again my friend. Thank you! A couple of the builds you listed i can say i finished as for the others well, one maybe i'll get back to at some point and the other is destined for the bin once it's been stripped of it's part's. So the record aint that good really. Still, i appreciate your motivating words towards everything, it'll always just be arse but as long as things turn out looking bout right i should be happy. Edit: Am i the only one who's having there reply post twice? RE: GAL 356 - Darkmoonspirit - 12-23-2011 Outstanding Work ! I love that one ![]() ... and i hope anytime in my live i could get one of those shuttle kits... ... RE: GAL 356 - LeeS - 07-13-2012 Superb build!! And a great paint job as always Phil! I think the weathering on this one is just right, as the original was very subtle if any really. One day I'll add one of these to my shelf, but it'll probably be a kit! For those that didn't spot it, a CGI version of this shuttle was used in the very first shot of the 'Nu' series. That was my doing :-) RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 07-13-2012 Thank you, Lee i apprecaite your kind words again mate. You are in the right place for one of these kit's down the track, this one will be back in production again soon as you can read about down in the market place. Mind you, after seeing some of your scratch builds recently i have no doubt you couldn't build this yourself. The kit though is a very good kit that goes together very well and that'll save you time so you can get onto something else a lot sooner. I do think most of us fans of the old show noticed the shuttle docking at the station at the start and it looked good what we got to see of it. Pitty it wasn't used through out the series but they went to that newer design. It was also good to see the museum pieces in the hanger bay. That original Basestar and Battlestar in the background. They must have been CG as well i'd guess. RE: GAL 356 - LeeS - 07-15-2012 Well the new shuttle was my doing too :-) I tried to take as much of the original and update it more to the look of the show. Even did a small version with the hopes they would build it as a set piece. Never liked them using Raptors as 'shuttles', but budgets were always tight. Everything in the Museum shots was cg, except for the Cylon in the foreground, that was a shot of Greg Jeins. RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 07-15-2012 The newer shuttle is a nice looking design that did exactly what you was trying to achieve. It has bloodlines relating to the original for sure when looking at it. Seems a little strange with things like budgets and even time that they had you do TOS version also. Especially for the amount of screen time it was actually used for. Was the newer version seen in the mini series or did you created it for the series to replace what you did for the mini series? Pitty we didn't se more of it anyway. RE: GAL 356 - LeeS - 07-16-2012 Well there was someone I know that had already started working on a CG version of the classic shuttle. So we gave him a little $ and used it. Also the opening sequence for the Mini, on the Armistice station, was originally MUCH longer. It showed that same guy showing up once a year, getting older, etc. So from the outside, we saw the old shuttle with a cleaner station become an older station with the new shuttle. So in reality the old shuttle should have been replaced with the new one when it changed and only seen in the museum shots. Armistice station was a very 'cheap' build, take a look at it and see if you can spot all the bits from other models reused. The new shuttle can be seen throughout the mini and series, but because they didn't make a set piece of it, it couldn't be featured. RE: GAL 356 - Wombat - 07-17-2012 Thanks for that little insite on how the opening sequence was originally planned. Obviously never knew that but that would have looked pretty cool and i guess some fun for you guys adding a little more aging to the station each visit if it had happened. Understand why it wasn't done as i guess the time/money was better spent elsewhere on the show. One of the things i liked about the show was how the G showed her increasing battle scars through out different series. RE: GAL 356 - dbhs - 07-18-2012 Lee, Thanks for the info on the shuttle and Armistice Station. I started a parts map for the new shuttle with the hopes of doing a scratch build at the same scale as the GAL356 studio model. I thought they'd be great companion pieces at the same scale. I couldn't find the thread just now but I believe most of the kit parts were identified but I found that a lot of them were not scaled relative to one another as actual kit parts. Certainly something easier done in CG. I'd still like to build this just more scratch building will be in order. I think I heard that FM Models might be doing this as a kit but not sure if that's true or still in the works. Anyway, it's a cool ship and would be a great model to attempt. -Doug Edit 1- Found it: http://www.studioscalemodelers.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=375 Edit 2- I see you found it already. I haven't been here consistently lately.... I'd love detailed info to make a serious attempt someday. Thanks. RE: GAL 356 - LeeS - 07-18-2012 Yeh the same pieces were used, but it's easy to scale in CG and modify them. There IS a technique for scaling parts that I've seen (and will look for) It involves shrinking the mold and it works amazingly well. That said I think beyond some of the obvious key parts, the rest could be replaced with similar pieces. L RE: GAL 356 - bwayne64 - 07-24-2012 I think this might be the one you mean, Cheers, Joe http://scihighmodels.com/howto_shrink.html RE: GAL 356 - LeeS - 07-24-2012 Thanks! That's the one! |
