HL-10 - HL-10 - 05-05-2012 This is my scratch built Northrop HL-10. It was an experimental lifting body that led to design concepts used in NASA's space shuttle. It was featured in "The Six Million Dollar Man" as the vehicle that crashed while being flown by Steve Austin, leading to the injuries that had him fitted with Bionic replacements (The HL-10 is seen in the opening credits being launched from the B-52, but its another lifting body the M2F2, that is seen to crash) ![]() ![]() ![]() I made a basic shape from balsa wood then used car body repair filler to get the smooth finish. The winglets and fins were shaped from acrylic sheet and the final shape was obtained from using Milliput. ![]()
RE: HL-10 - Scott Graham - 05-05-2012 Wow, nice scratchbuild! What scale is it? RE: HL-10 - HL-10 - 05-05-2012 (05-05-2012, 04:13 AM)Scott Graham Wrote: Wow, nice scratchbuild! What scale is it? Sorry, forgot to mention that. Its 1/24th scale. RE: HL-10 - dbhs - 05-05-2012 Wow. Nice work. I wouldn't have guessed it's a scratch build if you hadn't said so. Looks too perfect. Those compound curves must have been a pain to get symetrical on either side. RE: HL-10 - HL-10 - 05-06-2012 (05-05-2012, 07:16 AM)dbhs Wrote: Wow. Nice work. The curves were a swine! The whole project was put on hold for a year as I just gave up trying to get them symetrical. In all it took nearly two years of trial and error to get the shape close to what it should be. When ever I found new pictures or drawings, they seemed to show discrepencies between each other, which caused a lot of frustation. (I'm still not happy with the nose and plan to re-do it at some stage). RE: HL-10 - petersmith85 - 07-23-2012 Nice scratch built..I am congratulate for your effort keep to do these kind of things RE: HL-10 - LeeS - 07-23-2012 Superb build! And very professional! RE: HL-10 - JAWS - 07-23-2012 Reminds me of 'I Dream Of Gennie' from back in the day for some reason. Nice detail. Great scale. |
