Predator Backpack and Cannon - Need help finding model parts. - Art Andrews - 05-09-2012

Hi guys,

First time poster here at SSM (thanks for the ref, dirtydave) and wow! Your scanned model section is INCREDIBLE!

I am here because right now, at the RPF, we are studying the backpack and cannon from the movie, Predator which has dozens of model pieces on it, many from Tamiya 1:35 scale tanks. Our members (probably many of whom are members here as well) have identified a ton of the parts but we have run into a bit of a wall trying to ID the remaining parts.

I was hoping you might be willing to take a quick look at the photos we have uploaded and see if you are able to help us identify any of the remaining parts.

We have two threads going, one for the cannon, and one for the backpack.

If you aren't a member of the RPF already, you are welcome to sign up, but the purpose of this post isn't to get you to become a member of our site, so you are more than welcome to just respond here in this thread if you do see any parts that you can ID.

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge and information and thanks for being a great resource!

Oh no! You guys aren't sucking me in! I look at some of those Millennium Falcon research threads and my head just wants to explode... crazy crazy stuff!!!

Good call on the Karl! I believe there are actually 3 pieces from that model that match the Predator Cannon!!!

Glad to have been of some help then..

Gee how you and the gang have been able to ID so much is amazing when i look at the pictures you are working with. Some of that is real hard to make out. It's not the pictures but the detail itself.
Of those three part, two are only found in the munitions version while the other is a common part with the rail gun version also.

RE: Predator Backpack and Cannon - Need help finding model parts. - Art Andrews - 05-15-2012

I have MUCH larger photos of the cannon that I took at Comic Con last year. The really tough part now is that many of the pieces have broken or were blown off when the cannon exploded on set and good photos of the cannon from back in the day are exceedingly rare.

If you guys think you can provide additional help on some of he remaining pieces, I'd be glad to post up multiple, higher res photos from just the remaining parts. I really want to nail down as many as we possibly can.
BTW, I have already got one of the Karl kits on order!

RE: Predator Backpack and Cannon - Need help finding model parts. - Wombat - 05-16-2012

It can't hurt to do so although for me the remaining part's just dont ring any bells. Still do that. Post larger pictures of these remaining part's as i'm sure plenty of others are popping in for a looksie also and it may be of some help.

Thats great that you have a kit on order. Theres a few other pieces in there that look really good for kit bashing that are unique to that munitions version. Don't know if any of it was used on other miniatures/props but they sure as hell look good.

RE: Predator Backpack and Cannon - Need help finding model parts. - Art Andrews - 05-17-2012

Here is one of the parts now. I am only looking for the piece in yellow (we have already identified the model around it). It is roughly 30mm (1 3/6") wide at its widest point. It is clearly some type of pivot point. I am wondering if it might be the hips for one of the destroid type models, but it could easily be a military type model piece. I could really use some help nailing this one down.

I will work on posting up detailed and large photos of some of the other remaining parts we have yet to nail down as well.

jpeg image size has been increased to 2.4MB
Hope that helps.
I know I have struggled to resize images to upload.
So we'll see how it goes.
Nice work Phil.
Again.

Here is one more photo of the piece we are currently looking for, from a straight on angle.

Here is another piece I am trying to find and it is REALLY tough because 2/3 of the part has broken off the original model.

This piece is strikingly similar to the road wheel from a Tamiya 1:35 M10 Tank Destoyer... but I don't think it is an exact match. As with the other pieces, any help would be appreciated.

Art,
Thanks for posting the kit scans. They are very sharp scans.

That wheel in the last part is a very good match. It's hard to tell with the resin/putty that is smeared over it and the way it's broken off is odd. I thought the center hub part was part of the kit part and didn't match but now I'm thinking that that shape may be the same resin/putty stuff that was inside of and shaped by the hole of the part. Not sure if I'm explaining myself clearly. The ridges around the edge of the rim seem to match exactly.
Is the broken condition how it looked on screen or is that post-filming damage?

Doug, there is no way to tell... as with so many props, for all the detail put into the Predator backpack, you NEVER see it up close in the film. It is really odd to me that this piece is broken the way we see it. We have photos of the Predator pack being created, and it was a huge hunk of clay, with the model pieces pressed into it. My assumption is that the final prop was some type of foam piece, although it could have been fiberglass, but either way, the model parts would have been molded into the final pack, so how this piece ended up being broken is completely confusing to me.

Honestly, it might be a bit lazy, but I am going to go with the M10 / M36 Tank Destoyer road wheel and consider the part "found." I spent a lot of time yesterday going through every single 1:35 Tamiya kit scan that is on this site and that was the only one that was even close. I'll snag a model off eBay then compare it to the two Bradley parts that are sitting right beside it on the pack and see how it all stacks up.
