My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 07-11-2012

13 years ago I saw Jim Crevelings Battlestar and Movers replicas in Florida. Always being a fan of the ragtag fleet, I though "That movers ship look easy, I should make one too". Talking to Jim and then Charles Adams, Mark Dickson, plus many others on the way I found that while Jim's mode was superb, it was far from correct. So I started to buy kits, ask questions, and look way to close at the DVD. Slowly more and more pieces came together. Then in 2003 while working on the new show I received a picture from Greg Jein that really helped fill in some gaps (especially the Arado nose). Then for many many years it sat in a box while I traveled for work. Since then the B&W Pappas picture has surfaced and a few new pieces have been found. Now I'm finally going to complete my replicas 12years journey :-)

What started it all...

Last weekend I dug out the pieces, the white plastic on many pieces have turn a noticeable yellow. Then finally sorted out the containers and attached them with magnets. They had been done once, but wrongly.

I know all the bits I'm missing and should have them on the way in a week or two. One place I'm not going to fix/correct is the (now known) gap in the engines section. Mine has been glued together for 12 years and if the join is that good, I'm not messing with it. Plus to be honest, it looks better without the gap.

:-)

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - JAWS - 07-11-2012

Very kool.
An old project brought back to life.
In final stages of completion from what I can see.
Looking good.
Very good.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 07-11-2012

Yeh it's very close to done. The few bits I need are on the flickr page, but all have been sourced.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - Wombat - 07-11-2012

Lee,

It's fantastic to see both of you here. I'm glad you are finally going to complete this project. Again i'm sorry about that other stuff not happening as it was meant to, if it had you'd probably be showing us all a completed CM. The magnets work very well and it looks great seeing them containers all in place properly. Sure looks like the part already just waiting to be painted and the fun bit, weathered.

Again great to see ya here and keep us posted.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - Wombat - 07-15-2012

and have you got the room???

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 07-17-2012

Well I 'have', but I'm saving that for the 11ft Discovery :-)

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - JAWS - 07-17-2012

For some reason I don't think your kidding on that one....

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - Wombat - 07-17-2012

^
Well he could be but i'm swaying to what you said..

Fair enough then but a 7 1/2 foot Movers would be something now. I guess there is a good starter with what you found for it also.
You may have just planted a seed in someone out there doing that.. LOL

That would be big!!

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 07-17-2012

Well the 11ft Discovery is in the works, 7ft Mover, I'll probably pass on, but someone will... :-)

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - JAWS - 07-24-2012

I got Phils parts Lee & am molding at the moment.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - steve36uk - 07-24-2012

Looking fantastic !!-must get mine going again soon:-)

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 07-24-2012

Thanks Jason!!

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - dbhs - 07-25-2012

Nice work on the Movers, Lee. I'm dabbling on mine a bit. It's not a scratch build but the kit that TJ (Shadowknight) released a while back. ....but at nearly 300 parts plus needing to scratch the armature and tubes it kinda feels like a scratch build.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - JAWS - 07-31-2012

email sent LeeS.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 08-01-2012

Got it! many thanks!

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - JAWS - 08-08-2012

Some say 13 is unlucky.
This is not the case here mate.
Your parts are done Lee & shipping to Phil who is posting to you.
Can't wait for that update.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 08-08-2012

SWEET! Many thanks again!

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-06-2012

A wonderful goodie box arrived this morning from Australia!
MANY thanks to Wombat and JAWS, my Movers just made a big step forward.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - Wombat - 09-06-2012

FANBLOODYTASTIC!!!

and i'd like to echo that thanks to Jase also for helping out with it all.

Cheers!!

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - steve36uk - 09-07-2012

Some nice looking mount covers there.........:-) he said whistfully........

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-07-2012

:-) oh I've been after them for many many years. With these pieces I have just about nothing else that critical. There are a few pieces I want to replace with more accurate parts. I smell paint soon!

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - JAWS - 09-07-2012

Lee no worries mate.
Am happy to help.

Steve I have spares if you need them.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-12-2012

Hey all I need some help with 'one last part'
It's a small flat panel on the side of the red container and it was mostly ignored for years (I thought it was a decal) These are modified/straightened from the best pics I have of the area. Adjusted and scaled to get the best look. It could be two pieces, one bit on the left painted the same color as the Post Van Trailer and then the yellow piece added after, but I really don't know. ANYONE?

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - JAWS - 09-12-2012

Looks like the AKAGI piece used on the Tie Bomber?

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-12-2012

Hmmm, certainly could be a piece of this flightdeck
http://www.studioscalemodelers.com/forums/attachment.php?aid=5388
or this piece in the lower left:
http://www.studioscalemodelers.com/forums/attachment.php?aid=7593

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - Wombat - 09-12-2012

I think it's mostly been ignored as there really just hasn't been any real good reference to it.
It's very hard to make out what it is with what is public.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - darkimmitator - 09-12-2012

It's not just a piece of ribbed evergreen styrene sheet is it ?

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-12-2012

I'm 99% sure it's not, the piece on the left side is slighting different and the shadow isn't flat, so there's 'something' there :-)

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - steve36uk - 09-13-2012

That Akagi deck is pretty thick -if it was from that I think it would appear far more prominent.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-13-2012

Very good point. The search continues....

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-16-2012

Turns out it's from a 1/48th Panther. I found out about 8 hours after I scratched something else and painted it. So mine will close but not accurate. Right now it'll end up being about 95% there, so I'm happy with that.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - Wombat - 09-16-2012

Always the way!!Sad

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-16-2012

Here's an update, things are moving along now, thanks to JAWS and Wombat! I've removed some parts I had used substitues for, finished the containers and detailed the center section finally! Last time I had any real progress was in 2004! I have a few new parts on the way from Shadowknight and updated custom decals from JT Graphics, so in a few weeks the final pieces will be here.

There's also a couple of surprises I'm working on :-)

Finally have a casting from the Aurora M8, it's an important part as it's extremely visible. Here's what I scratched based on DVD frame grabs. Don't think I did too bad.

Something strange has happened to both my 'core' tubes. They have cracked in strange ways. Neither has been drilled, the magnets are glued on. Both are about 6 years old and I glued the magnets on over a month ago. Then a couple of days ago when I started work on them again one started to do this. Then the other. It's very strange why. Hopefully they stop and don't fall apart, but you can see some little cracks just starting in the middle of nowhere.

Center section is done!

And the containers have some colour (color in the US) The red might be too bright, but there's ALOT of weathering to go on them.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - Wombat - 09-16-2012

Excellent stuff there!!

It sure is bright looking right now but that wont last once ya start hitting it with the weathering side of things. That'll tone everything down for sure. The cracking of the tube is a weired one. Surely it's not just the force of them magnets doing it if they are opposite in polarity and trying to pull together?

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-16-2012

I was thinking it might be the magnets doing it, they are strong. Just strange it started a month after they were glued on.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - Wombat - 09-16-2012

Strange and not good if it is them doing it as they'll continue to want to do that.

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - darkimmitator - 09-16-2012

Excellent progress . Can't wait to see the weathering process !!

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-16-2012

I've added some extra strengtheners inside the tubes, so that should stop any twisting/pulling from the magnets. That or it'll explode one night :-)

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - Wombat - 09-16-2012

That should do the job nicely!

I was going to suggest sleeving between the armature and mount tubes under the magnets but you've basicly done that.

Fingers crossed that has done the trick!

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-24-2012

I little baggie of parts just arrived in my mail box, final assembly will be done tonight!

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - Wombat - 09-24-2012

And that couldn't be happening soon enough!

Look out fellas, Lee will be hitting us with another masterpiece real soon i feel..

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-25-2012

The main parts are now cleaned and glued on. The front and engine sections of my movers are finally in primer :-) Just need to clean up the B-29 piece castings and the little 'surprise' I have planned and I'm done with the build section.
L

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - Wombat - 09-25-2012

Ya got me wondering what that surprise just might be.

Sounds like we'll be finding out pretty soon though.Smile

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-26-2012

Not until I'm done with paint n everything :-)

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-26-2012

Well after 12 years and many starts/stops/miles/etc... the build phase is officially done and the primer is on!

Well done on that side of things Lee!! [cough] bout time [cough]Tongue

Looks really sharp there! (bastard)Big Grin

RE: My Colonial Movers Saga... - LeeS - 09-27-2012

Repainted 4 of the containers yesterday. Found much better looking green (Tamiya field grey), brown (Tamiya red brown) and red (Tamiya dull red)
