Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 07-30-2012 Here's one of the ongoing (waaay delayed) projects on the desk. Vader's TIE X-1 from the Kit by Chris Kelley. A large amount of the time spent on this one was trying to avoid possible future warpage of the longer resin castings. To that end brass was inserted into the 'center' wings. Channels were cut and then the square stock was sandwiched during assembly of the two halves. ![]() The outer wings (four in all) were rebuilt with a piece of flat aluminum stock 3/32" in the middle and then new styrene layers for the same reason. Maybe moreso to assure the wing edges are arrow straight even right now- since they are easily a focal point when viewed. ![]() Rebuilding the wings also assured nice edges and meeting joints between the various angles. The cockpit was lit with a variety of features. Some overall 'mood lighting' along with some flashing doo-dads. ![]() ![]() ![]() To answer the age old question- how the fuck do you enter a TIE- the upper lid was hinged. ![]() This gave an opportunity to build a whole new area, the lid 'collar', and busy it up with those things that would possibly belong in an Imperial TIE. ![]() ![]() And some framing has been worked in for the 'windows' which this model will have later. ![]() ![]() Of course the guns and engines are lit. Up front green LEDs are beneath amber bulbs so when not lit it matches the studio model. ![]() ![]() This has been under construction forever but is nearing the time for paint- stay tuned. RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - Tsophika - 07-30-2012 I was actually thinking about Vader's TIE last night... along the lines of 'what doesn't get made often?' The Kelly kit is the only one ever produced, I think? Craig RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - darkimmitator - 07-30-2012 Very nice work there duck !!! Love the lighting and reinforcement mods !!! RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - Wombat - 07-30-2012 Outstanding work with it all thus far. Building with the future in mind is always a good thing with anything like this. Did i miss the part about it's size? RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - t2sides - 07-31-2012 Wow, that is INCREDIBLE Duck!! I can't believe some flippers and feathers can build something like that (and keep it dry)!!! Seriously, I LOVE the lighting, and the collar and details are top notch. What awesome creativity and skill there!!! A very nice work of art coming together, keep us posted!! -Sean RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 07-31-2012 Tsophika: AFAIK the Kelly kit is the only "SS" model of the X1 so far. It's the only one I'm aware of at least. Furball (Wombat): Aye, size? "About so big!" Or, they say it's studio scale. ![]() Darkimitator/T2Sides: Thanks, while a lot of grinding and carving had to happen- the kit did offer room inside to add electronics. This one has the usual LEDs/resistors along with transistors and chips to add effects. ![]() Thanks gents for the kind words.
RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 07-31-2012 Showing the work to add lighting to the control yoke and you can see the three mini's in the overhead console as well. Also since the roof flips now some details were added to the backside of the front bulkhead. ![]() ![]() It's mounted to a PanaVise. The bottom was recessed so when attached it was rather 'tidy' looking. Power is through a ,,,um,,,,power cable! Yeah, that's it. ![]() RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 07-31-2012 More of the cockpit greeblies made. These are only visible from an odd angle through the cockpit front glass- ![]() The mount for the PanaVise, and power port- ![]() All the kit greeblies were removed from the open 'pits' and replaced. Since the kit would have you mate top and bottom halves combined with the castings made the originals kinda ugly. ![]() ![]() ![]() And the kit supplied details for the scooped out areas would have you mount them from behind the surface. But, that is a very difficult way to get a seemless transition. So instead they were sunk in from the front, in newly enlarged openings, then sanded flush. This was done six times in all. ![]() RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - Wombat - 07-31-2012 Nothing has changed, outstanding work! RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - JAWS - 07-31-2012 Yep its good to see the ol quack back at some real models. RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - peza - 08-01-2012 eh up buddy that looks smart mym8,i`m lovin the lights and the openin top..truely brillant....cheers for the inspiration, that is one model i`d love to build....peza RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 08-01-2012 Wombie, Jase, Peza, Thankee gents one and all. Peza, I have mixed emotions about this kit. It looks the part and it is the only game in town- yet, as a casting it's one that will probably frustrate the hell out of you. Pinholes, soft details, bubbles and so on. I can see a lot of work went into the master but the casting is one that will take more cleanup and rebuilding than a builder would normally expect from a kit. A discriminating builder will be confronted with many challenges that will cause you extra work. But then, that's what builders do, isn't it?
RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 08-01-2012 As mentioned I had built new "outer wings" and here's a few shots to better show why- I was shooting for nice joints with the cast wing 'centers'. With the aluminum cores and styrene outers It came out how I wanted at least. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() While this meant recreating all surface details as well, it allowed nice joints again on these 'spars'. ![]() ![]() And finally, it gave nice straight overall wing assemblies- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 08-02-2012 The guns are topped with LED Holders on the studio model. But that style is now hard to come up with. So, some styrene stacking and whittling fixed that. ![]() Then there's the question of that "rear view mirror" viewable through the cockpit. Is it a rear view mirror? A Wii display? A hands free phone? An Ipad? Who the fuck knows! But with the lid openable it's one more thing that you can now see the backside of. So I carved up a lil framing and inset some chrome tape. The cockpit lights should bounce off it and give a lil more eye appeal to things. ![]() ![]() RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - peza - 08-02-2012 eh up buddy, things aint right in the real world! but alittle work and dedication makes things special and ya work is defo special,,,,,i still wish to have ago in the future, but along with me scratch build theres a group build on me home town web site in 1/72 scale and ive got a t65.i wasnt gonna play but fuck it! ive got til next feb/mar to make something good....its your fault.......lol ![]() (08-01-2012, 06:38 AM)DarthDuck Wrote: Wombie, Jase, Peza, RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 08-02-2012 Peza, I enjoy group builds. Similar if not the same subject, lotsa comraderie and sharing towards a common goal. Yeah, that's usually fun- hope you enjoy! ![]() Oh, but it ain't my fault. Oh wait, everything is my fault- yeah, that's right.
RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - JAWS - 08-02-2012 Duck its good to have you squawkin around again. This is looking great. RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 08-02-2012 (08-02-2012, 05:00 PM)JAWS Wrote: Duck its good to have you squawkin around again. Thankee, it's good to be able to share too.
RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 08-03-2012 Wrapping things up prior to paint I spotted some bare wall when viewing the craft upside down. Since the lid opens and the canopy shows a large area I set about to fill it as well- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - Wombat - 08-03-2012 You just love doing this sorta stuff, you just can't help yourself really! ![]() And it's looking bloody good there DD!!
RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - dbhs - 08-04-2012 Awesome work, Don. Another amazing build. This is in scale with the other SS Ties, right, not the bomber? Must be big. It's always hard to tell with your builds as the microscopic details you add make everything seem huge! RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 08-04-2012 (08-04-2012, 03:27 AM)dbhs Wrote: Awesome work, Don. Another amazing build. This is in scale with the other SS Ties, right, not the bomber? Must be big. It's always hard to tell with your builds as the microscopic details you add make everything seem huge! I'm not an officionado on the sizes/dimensions that define SS for SW. But, it looks in scale with the Niesen TIE which is acknowledged as SS. Except for the internal makeup and pilots. But I understand that to be a matter for debate. ![]() "Small details"- you should see the LightSaber handle I whittled out of aluminum for Darth. Alas it doesn't really show up for how he usually keeps it tucked away? So sometimes I think about it and I kinda believe that I enjoy the challenge of packing features into a really small subject even more than working with the big ones? Oh, I can't stuff ALL the details into something small but it is fun to fit more in than some folks might expect. ![]() RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 08-08-2012 A preview of the base with PanaVise, controls mounted. Then a further "surround" will be built and all painted, of course. ![]() RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - Wombat - 08-08-2012 That'll do the job nicely! RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - Wombat - 08-09-2012 It may not get noticed that much when that craft is in position? Thats gonna be pretty spectacular afterall! RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - darkimmitator - 08-09-2012 Superb work ,right from the display base ,all the way up to the build subject . Well thought out mods that got perfectly executed which in turn equals a top notch build /result ! Well done Ducky !!! RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 08-14-2012 Wombie, DarkImmitator, Y'all too kind gents. Put a lil color to the base as well as changing the mounting of the switches. ![]() ![]() RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 08-27-2012 Got some color coats on things, made the base 'surround' and installed 'glass' in the openings. Getting really close to a time I'll take some shots without clutter in view. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() RE: Vader's TIE-X1 - DarthDuck - 08-27-2012
