RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - Wombat - 09-17-2012

Hey Mel, it's bloody fantastic to see your build being posted here and gee it is looking bloody good also there. The first picture is a killer angle and i must say looks pretty good to me where youre at with things. Of course theres plenty ta do still but the same as you it helps with motivation for my own build seeing what you other crazy builders are doing with your own. Hopefully between all of the builds being posted we can keep us all prodding along to reach the goal of a finished Battlestar.

As for Mike ever finishing his? Well you've known him a long time and if i was a betting man i'd say he'll find somthing to tare apart again before he is done. He just can't help himself there!!Tongue

Again, thanks for bringing your build over here for us to enjoy also!

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - t2sides - 09-19-2012

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - LastBattlestar - 09-19-2012

Yeah, good to see it posted here Mel. Don't give up at RI, there are plenty who would like to see updates.

Between Phil, myself, Ken and you, there is plenty of Battlestar building going on! Very encouraging indeed.

Mike

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - padawan-builder - 09-20-2012

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the encouraging words. It really does help when others are building at the same time. Now if I can just keep pace with Phil....Big Grin

More Updates,
Here are my front landing bay cones thus far. It is really hard to get these just right. Now if I can just duplicate the effort on the other side.

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - Wombat - 11-07-2012

Nice work there. Those pins are a great idea!

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - padawan-builder - 01-21-2013

Here are a few updates. Trying to get the parts glued down for the neck bottom and coffin areas. Slow but steady.....

Mel

Coming along nicely there, thanks for the pics of where ya at.

Just stick at when ya can and everything will slowly fill in.

Study your pics before gluing and then make things fit as best ya can. Same as i did!!

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - JAWS - 03-29-2013

Excellent.
You are making great progress.
Im actually extremely envious of you guys & your achievements on these replicas.
Won't be for a long time until I will be able to get back to my build.
Keep up the good work 7 thanks for sharing the update.

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - darkimmitator - 03-30-2013

Another great update Mel and thanks for posting . Posts like this just might jumpstart my build mojo again .

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - LastBattlestar - 04-02-2013

That looks sensational Mel, great progress! Keep going fella, I've been stalling waiting for you to catch up. I use a large set of pliers for bending the TB pipes, set the pipe at right angles in the jaw serrations, close pliers and bend sharply over the edge. It makes really nice, tight bends.

Ken, you too huh? I just can't seem to restart either since Christmas. I've been trying to catch up with Phil for some inspiration, but have been really busy around the house, Easter visits, a friend's wedding, beginning to organise OUR wedding....Big Grin

Mike

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - darkimmitator - 04-02-2013

Great tip about bending the pipe ,Mike . And congradulations on your future wedding !

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - padawan-builder - 04-03-2013

Hey Mike,
Congratulations on finally taking the plunge. Smile I'm sure you will be very happy.
As for the beasty, thanks for the encouraging words. You know I really only have two goals in building my G. One is to try and look as neat as Phil (hope springs eternal). The other is to finally catch up to and then pass you. Wink So thanks for stalling on my behalf, now get back to work.

Looking forward to your next update.

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - t2sides - 04-09-2013

Hey Mel!
WOW, I go away for a couple months and then this progress pops up!! AMAZING!! She is looking mighty good! I am still blown away at the creativity and different approaches the G builders take, but they all keep coming out looking outstanding. You guys are in such a great time to have such great info and support available! CONGRATS on keeping her moving along!!

Great job to all you guys working together as a team and sharing. It's really cool to watch!!! Love to see more of these beauties in the pipeline!

Ohh, and Mike, quit making excuses and get back to building! Your tag line is going to be '20 years and counting' pretty soon!! Smile But seriously, CONGRATS on the engagement!! How exciting!

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - Wombat - 09-04-2013

Just popped in to look at the F-16 fuselage you used, Mel. Looks better than i was thinking it would. It doesn't match as you said but it doesn't look too bad either and does the job. The hump on whatever is originally seems to be the main problem but the fit looks really good for how you cut it.

Also seem to have missed your last update you posted and things are looking great there! Glad i'm not the only one that doesn't enjoy some of the pipe work. For the most part it's not too bad but start having it go this way, then that way and over or around this and things start looking not so pretty here. By the last ones we should be getting good at em, just in time to redo all the earlier stuff. lol

Good work and time for another update when you get the chance.

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - padawan-builder - 09-21-2013

Hey guys,
Here are a few update pics along with a question for the collective. I am working on the mouth section on the port side. It looks like parts 36, 37, and 38 have not been id'd. I took a stab a scratching this section (see pic). It turned out better than I had expected, but still would rather use the correct parts if available. Anyone been able to id them yet?

Thanks for looking,

Mel

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - padawan-builder - 09-21-2013

Whoa!

My pics posted upside down. Anyone ever seen that before. They are right side up on my computer. Huh

Mel

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - Wombat - 09-21-2013

Fine bit of trench work there Mel, even if you was standing on your head at the time..LOL

It's really good seeing that area at the stage you've got it now. For me anyway who hasn't tackled this bit it's good to how it goes down.

Haven't had that problem with the pictures before myself but haven't posted any for a bit either. Theres been pictures posted though and they seem to be ok.

36,37 & 38... Two are one part so it's only two parts you are looking for.

I'll update the map.Wink

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - Richard_2001 - 09-21-2013

guys,

Whats really weird is only the thumbnails are upside down Huh

Richard

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - Wombat - 09-21-2013

Not for me..All the pictures come up like the thumbnails this end.

btw, Excellent job on them part's you made up, Mel.

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - padawan-builder - 09-21-2013

Yeah, they show up still upside down for me when I click on them. Very weird. It occurs to me that these are the first pictures I have ever posted that were taken on my blackberry (digital camera was not available at the time). I wonder.....

Mel

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - padawan-builder - 09-22-2013

Hey Phil,
Thanks for the encouraging words. Means a lot coming from you. Look forward to seeing the maps updated. Hope it ends up being a kit(s) I already have. Smile

So, how is your monster coming? Any updated pics to share?

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - Wombat - 09-22-2013

Not too much to show here again on mine but have been playing around a bit on the cross arm detailing. Still stuck looking for a donor that works for me for that plane fuselage. Have decided i will just glue the rest down now and cut a plane fuselage to fit what i end up with when the time comes. Have one side done and hope to have the other glued on later today.

I did update that side head map but sorry i only have one of ID's for you. Haven't looked at this area much yet so haven't been hunting for anything unknown there really. Jase has a mold for the part that i ID'd for you but am unsure when he will be casting again. Without speaking for him perhaps when he does cast some of his BSG kits up again next he can do a few pulls of some other parts at the same time. When i talk with him next i'll ask if he will do.

Keep at it mate. For me the progress you and others make on these builds is fantastic inspiration to work on mine.

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - LastBattlestar - 09-22-2013

Really good to see you still moving along with the build Mel, just a little bit at a time will get you there....eventually.Smile Trench area looks good, it's one of those sections that looks busier than it actually is but luckily there are not too many tricky parts in there.

Oh, I might just have a spare casting of that part you were asking about. It's only on the port aide, right?

Mike

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - darkimmitator - 09-22-2013

Great update Mel . Thanks , we needed that !!

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - padawan-builder - 09-27-2013

Hey Mike,
THanks for the offer. Would be interested to see what you have. Not sure we are talking the same part as the one I am looking for, the kit was just recently ID'd, but you may have it. Let me know.

By the way, you baby is looking very nice. Sorry I don't post replies often, it's just so crazy busy, I often only come online when I have a question, and then I try and catch up on all I missed, and ... well you get the picture.

Found it Mel..

[attachment=15089]

If Mike wants to mold it for his build as i'm sure he will, i'll send you a casting of it.Smile

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - LastBattlestar - 10-30-2013

Yeah, I'll cast it up no problems. And anything else I can get my hands on!Smile

What kit is this part from ?

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - star-art - 10-31-2013

Let me guess, Monogram 1/8 Jaguar XKE.

I noticed the price of this kit has recently skyrocketed. It's now pushing $300 US on eBay. Holy FRAK! Is that a coincidence considering it was recently added to our list of kits needed?

This is the sort of thing that I find incredibly frustrating. Every time a newcomer ventures into our hobby, the competition for hard-to-find kits drives up the price for everyone. It's getting to the point where I'm not sure I can afford to continue this project.

Wombat is very gracious and he is of a mind to share info most generously. I completely agree with this in principle. Yet, in practice, there are some legitimate concerns and problems. For example, watching kit prices go through the roof is just frustrating beyond belief.

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - LastBattlestar - 10-31-2013

I think its probably coincidence 90% of the time. There aren't that many people building Galactica models. Unless someone is watching us in particular and inflating prices accordingly, but that's pretty remote.

There is always the castings option.Smile They look almost identical under a coat of paint anyway!

Mike

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - Wombat - 10-31-2013

Well things can change just as easy with the sharing of info. I can let everyone hunt things for themselves also as i guess it seems to be pretty much the boat that sails on the Galactica waters be it about a new more pricey kit , a new cheaper kit or even a kit we all already know. Just seems the community doesn't wanna help each other for the most part and we all go over the same grounds looking for stuff that there is a good chance has already been found by one of us. A great way to get along but anyway...

I just looked at those ebay sales of the Jag and it has never been a cheap kit to start with since we've known of it. The pricing seems on par with what it was back then and is more to do with the condition of some kit's being a bit more expensive. I must have missed the $300 one though? Sealed vintage is always going to have a higher value. though Thats the collectors buying them more so than the part robbers i would feel. It's all to do with timing and condition if you scoll down that list.

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - LastBattlestar - 10-31-2013

If we are going to keep working together on a fairly tight group and are worried about kit info vetting out, how about we offer castings to each other? Personally I don't worry too much about what kit the greeblie came from as long as I can get it.Smile

Man, I have nearly 2 grand tied up in Custom Replicas parts and have no idea where half of them came from!

Mike

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - star-art - 11-01-2013

I don't want to create the impression that I'm not in favor of working together as a group. I was just venting some frustration.

Based on my experience, I suspect (but can't prove) that for every person who joins us here (and we welcome them) there could be a hundred "wannabes" out there who just collect info and buy up kits but build nothing. Heck, you could even accuse me of that since I have a lot of kits in the stash that are reserved for other projects that are not yet started. Too much to do, too little time and energy. . .

I want to give a "hats off" to Phil though as he has contributed more to this effort than just about anyone I know. He has bought all sorts of kits looking for parts and he's managed to find quite a few details we did not know about before. He's really done his homework and he has always shared everything he finds with the group. That is very generous indeed!

I guess I would prefer that expensive and hard-to-find kits not be put on public lists, but rather shared privately with all of us who are actually building. I don't think that info should be kept from anyone who needs it. But, posting it for all the world to see could actually work against us.

At any rate, technology will eventually change the way we collect kits for parts. Between casting, scanning, and 3D printing, it won't be as big an issue going forward. I can see the day not too many years from now where people will start collecting and trading 3D files rather than actual kits. When that happens, you will more likely print a part when it is needed rather than cutting up a precious kit or having to mold/cast something.

With that said, when that day does arrive, we will still need at least one of each kit to act as a master pattern. So, someone will still need to invest in these kits.

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - Mr. Wabac - 11-01-2013

Understand where you are coming from Charles.
In the case of automotive kits, they seem to realize crazy prices without Studio Scale.
In the case of the Jag, JPS and a few others they are very popular with car modelers and are also huge kits in themselves; sort of like the big Bandai tanks, which also garner big dollars.

For many older car kits it is also the case that the molds themselves have changed year-to-year to replicate the latest model year for the real car/truck. This means that any reissue of the kit will not be possible for earlier models if the actual molds were retooled.

For the JPS and other Formula1 car kits many endured many years without a re-release because of tobacco labelling laws of all things !

Overall, I'm glad things are more open than the dark times both for kit information and photo references.

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - LastBattlestar - 11-01-2013

Maybe this conversation could be split off into a new thread to avoid derailing Mel's thread?

Mike

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - padawan-builder - 11-02-2013

Hey Mike,
Thanks for thinking about me, but I don't mind. You can hijack my thread anytime.

I can see both sides. I suspect there have been times when a kit being made public has caused the prices to spike. But I believe this is usually just temporary. In my experience they eventually come back down. Also, as Wombat pointed out, a lot of these kits have special value in and of themselves totally apart from the studio scale building community.

As for sharing info, I am glad it is more open than it has ever been, but I also share Phil's frustration. I know there have been times over the years where people of put out requests for help on a particular item that you know others in the community know the answer to, but no one responds. I'm sure people have their reasons, and I want to respect that, but it can be frustrating.

I want to echo too my thanks to Phil for all the hard work he has put into iding parts and how much he has been willing to help the rest of us. Thanks Phil!

Well, that's my 1 1/2 cents worth. Now, if I could only find some time to work on the G again. Big Grin

Mel

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - Wombat - 11-03-2013

Well if ya not posting updates Mel then this is one way to keep your thread near the top but i think it's best you just get back to posting your build and we move on from this.

As a parting note though on what the frustration is. It's got nothing to do with my own build or my requests for help. It's simply about the willingness of the community to share there part's finds, no matter what it is or where it is on the map. My frustration is no one really seems to want to do this yet there must be part's being found by the other builders as they go along with there builds in different areas. I don't keep adding them to the map for praise like some of you guys have just shown i do it for the good of the Battlestar building community in the hope it helps others with the same desire. Be it current builders or the ones that are still foolish enough to follow us.. LOL
I appreciate your thanks but i've only been doing what i have to try and help all the builders out and that comes natuarlly to us Aussies. The part that frustrates me is i seem to be for the most part the only one of us builders throwing up what isn't on the maps, some of which are pretty easy to find and others can take hours and hours of searching without ever finding them. I will never find everything, thats a fact but it'd be nice to know what the rest of you builders have discovered the same as i have showing. For starters theres the simple time factor of hunting part's that may not be required if one of the others have already found it and then there is the wasted $ looking also for something that may have actually been discovered just not been added to the maps by whomever.

If the WHOLE Battlestar community would just be more open the time and resources could actually be spent searching for part's that between us all none of us have been able to find.

Thats my half a cent now give me an update FFS so we can move on.Smile

RE: Padawan-Builder's Galactica: 9 years and counting - padawan-builder - 04-21-2015

Hey Guys,
Finally working on the G again after a year+ off.  Looks like others are taking some time off too.  Either that or just laying low.  Is this still the place to be for G builders, or has everyone moved elsewhere?  I have a pic of my current progress on the port eye.  I also posted a question for parts help in the research section.  I hope there are some G builders still around.

THX,

Mel
