F&M Viper Mk2 - LeeS - 11-13-2012

I 'guess' this is considered a Studio Scale build :-)

Back sometime in 2004 I helped Frank and Moe with some pictures and info on the Nu-BSG Viper Mk2. They generously sent me a kit in 2005 and I started to work on it right away. For some reason best left to the chronicles of time, once I had the main pieces cleaned, sanded and in primer it moved into a box...

After many many years and miles, I finally got the final layer of primer on.

Then into the base white with red stripes applied and the rest of the fun could start!

My early kit had the original cockpit. Frank graciously sent me some parts from the later editions so I could upgrade the insides. It was a little hack and slash, but I made it work.

During my time on the show I made custom name/number plates for each of the crew. They are used in the show, but I doubt you'll ever notice them. Also made a whole bunch of renders for publicity. Figured I'd use mine for the Viper Mk2. Just about all the images of the CGI Mk2 out there now are from those renders. It's kinda funny seeing my name/call sign on the instructions of the Moebius kit, the QMX posters and many other places.
Jeff at JT Graphics made a set of custom decals to match.

Couple of little springs added to the seat

I'm not much good with figures, so my pilot (me??) was a bit slapdash.

Last night I finally finished it and snapped some pics this morning.

Beautiful!!!

Damn Lee, you're really pumping out some razor sharp builds recently. Getting rid of some pent-up Galactica energy? It must be very surreal to hold a model made from your own work on the show. Very cool!

Mike

RE: F&M Viper Mk2 - moonlightdrive21 - 11-13-2012

Fantastic job !

RE: F&M Viper Mk2 - Wombat - 11-14-2012

Damn ya on a mission this year to clean out some old boxes there!! lol

Is the MkII your design? Pretty cool having as a physical piece!!

Nice job with both the build and paint. That cockpit looks fantastic!! I don't know how you guys do such clean work with that side of the things. The figure (you?) is another thing i can't do but you are not fooling any of us making us believe you look that good! lol
Name plate..cool!!!
The completed piece looks bloody outstanding once again my friend.

Well done there!!

RE: F&M Viper Mk2 - LeeS - 11-15-2012

Thanks :-)
The Mk2 was mostly designed by Pierre Drolet for the XBox BSG game in 2003. Then that design was tweaked to make the fullsize props (but you can still see the Firefly class side engines used for the Viper engines). After that Gabriel Korner built the CGI version from the set piece. We added the RCS holes to the CGI model, else tried to match it as close as possible. Never understood why they didn't make the RCS holes in the fullsize pieces after the miniseries.

The figure is meant to be Adama (Apollo) not anything like me. Just meaning it's meant to be me as I have the name plate. Maybe he's just flying it :-)

The name plate was done mostly because if you Google 'Viper Mk2' you'll see...

RE: F&M Viper Mk2 - Wombat - 11-15-2012

So the game was in the works before the show? Was the studio impressed by what they seen in the game and simply went with that for a design then, pretty much? Very cool for Pierre to have is vision reach further than just the game front that it was perhaps only originally intended.

As for the figure, yeah i was just razzing ya there mate.. Sorry bout that.. OK i'm not really!! LOL

Did the google thing but ya still got me..

RE: F&M Viper Mk2 - Mr. Wabac - 11-19-2012

Nice work Lee - glad to see someone who works in the virtual FX industry has an interest in good old-fashioned FX miniatures. So is the patch on the base from the show ?

RE: F&M Viper Mk2 - LeeS - 11-24-2012

Well I always wanted to build miniatures, and did for a little bit. But was too late for the good stuff so I went digital. Now I'm back making miniatures for fun!

The patch isn't from the show and as far as I know they never made than one. It was always the 3rd Viper or 7th Raptor that we saw as a patch. I always wanted that one, so I had some made from the original art a few years ago.
