3phase SS Cylon Raider - 3phase - 10-05-2013

OK I have 3 builds on the go, Red Jammer, Viper and a Raider. It’s a bit silly as I should concentrate on one at a time as it takes me so long to do anything..
Anyway I normally wouldn’t show these builds as there old news and I hate taking pics and downloading them on my slow old computer but I think it is good to contribute so here is my SS Raider.
I’m not sure who the maker is but I found out why it was a little on the cheap side. It was very warped and nothing really fits to well. I also think someone may have had a little go with it as a few broken glue spots etc.
Anyway I have tried to get most of the warps out but still not great. Had to do some filing to get the cockpit and the part behind to fit. It came with a lighting kit but I don’t think I will use it on this build (I’m just lazy).

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - Wombat - 10-05-2013

Being a bit outa shape probably makes it that more authentic actually..Smile

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - Troy Downen - 10-05-2013

That's what I call a "modeler's model" - it will be so satisfying once it's built and on display because you'll know how much work went into it! Me, on the other hand... I'm a wimp and will wait to see what Mobius comes out with! Smile

Keep at it - I'll be watching with interest.

But the problem is we are no longer happy with wonks and stuff that we are only happy now with perfection Big Grin

Mate don’t worry I would much prefer a easy snap together kit but it’s just not like that but we must be very happy that we can even get these kits in the first place.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - 3phase - 10-06-2013

OK forgot to mention this kit came with an interior with cylons but I’m not going to use them on this kit.

Would be cool if they fit into Jase’s new kits.

Jase will they fit in your new kit or would there need to be a lot of mods to fit them.

Would be cool to have them in there with a tinted clear canopy.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - Wombat - 10-06-2013

Looking at the size of that cockpit you'll need to remove a bit of material out of the V2, or 3 depending what Jase calls his.

As for perfection. Replicatring the blemishes the original miniatures had would be something not many would actually do and for good reason being display pieces, but that really would be perfection in the case of replicating most of the SS subjects. Smile

I guess if it doesn’t fit into Jase's I might put it in this one. Hope he can chime in when he gets a chance and I know what you mean about perfection but i dont have the time or skills to do it.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - 3phase - 10-06-2013

OK just saw the instructions for the V2 over at resin illuminati and doubt very much they will fit without a lot of hassle. Having a solid body looks great to stop all the warping tho.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - Wombat - 10-07-2013

The body is one piece on the V2 but it is not solid. Mike use to fill the inside with some sort of foam like an expanda foam thats all. You would need to cut out the resin floor where the cockpit covers and remove some of the foam. I would think that cockpit interior would work ok then.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - 3phase - 10-07-2013

Yes i guess with a bit of cutting it might work OK.

OK here is my mess of lighting but should work OK. It was a pain to solder the wires to the small switch.
I couldn’t get them to work as I didn’t realise that the little lights had a + & - side to them.
Lucky I wired them all backwards so I just connected my power + to – and they worked. Just got to cover them.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - JAWS - 10-07-2013

That's the old Custom Replicas kit. Mike rebuilt the pattern because of its warping. That's what my kit is. The V2 that was completely rebuilt from scratch. The cockpit in mine is more like 1/1 set configuration. Anything can fit with a little work, lol!!!
Speaking of Raiders I should have mine ready before the end of the month.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - dbhs - 10-08-2013

The one piece V2 was a really solid kit. This one is wonky but once it's painted and weathered it won't be visible. Going to look great. Nice to see another one coming together.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - 3phase - 10-08-2013

Ok some more picks of the work I have done on the lights. It really is a lot of work for something i won’t use much but good practice.
I think for my next time i will use a motion detector switch so turns on when ever you walk past.

this is the switch that i had to put some pipe in the end.

it will go thru this part.

Had to dremel away some material to fit the switch

and with top just sitting on

Drilled holes in top part to fit front lights

Now with bottom just sitting on

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - Wombat - 10-08-2013

Like what you came up with for that switch location.

Mate that's not mine it was all in the instructions.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - Wombat - 10-08-2013

Well even so it looks good on your build!!Wink

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - Cylon-Knight - 10-09-2013

Let there be light! Smile
Great work, this is going to be one fine Raider.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - 3phase - 03-23-2014

.

OK haven't done much for a while and wont be doing much more for a while as just sold the house and will be living in the caravan for a long time while we build a new house.

Lookin real good!

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - redeye - 03-24-2014

Yep that's the Jim Key kit released about 6 years ago under the name "Miscellaneous models" which was cast from a studio model or one of the pyro models.
Its looks good nice work on it...I'm waiting for Moebius to release theirs before I build mine so I can compare it with my Miscellaneous Models Raider.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - Satazius - 03-24-2014

That's looking really good. My top hull is so flat compared to the bottom, I got stuck awhile back trying to figure out how to get the two parts to mate. I think I need to make a buck that has roughly the same curve, heat the top and clamp it over the buck to reshape it. Was yours way out? It's a nice kit generally speaking.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - dbhs - 03-24-2014

Nice work. Great to see more progress on this one.

My top hull needed work as well. What I did was put in some packers on the bottom hull where needed then heated the top hull with my heat gun (be careful) and pulled the top hull down and clamped. It was not as easy as that sounds and im still not 100% happy but there comes a time when you just have to say enough.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - Wombat - 03-25-2014

Not too sure on why theres been issues with the hulls halves not lining up but the V1 was flatter compared to the reworked V2 that followed and of course that hull was one piece.

Good job with that one, it's looking the part for sure.

This is partly why Mike redid the patern.
Also as it was a little small from shrinkage.

Looking good though.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - olcabour - 03-26-2014

It already looks nice with its primering livery.

I would have stressed a little while inserting foam in it, fearing this push aside top and bottom parts from each others.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - JAWS - 03-26-2014

The foam goes in whilst its still in the mould.

If your talking about the model I did yes I used foam as it is an earlier version but the later versions as jase is talking about already come with it done. When I did mine I was not worried as the foam just expanded out the hole where the canopy will go. I just cut the excess foam away when it had dried then put the canopy on.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - olcabour - 03-27-2014

Thanks for your answers jase and 3phase.

Yes, I was talking about your model. Thanks for the explanation.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - 3phase - 09-06-2014

Not much done but have started the painting and weathering. Not going to extremes here just want a quick finish. Just a pic from my phone. Also I forgot about the green octagonal stickers or whatever they are. Have never applied them before and wondering how do I do it and should they have goon on before weathering.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - dbhs - 09-07-2014

The weathering looks great. I think it looks good without the decals.

RE: 3phase SS Cylon Raider - 3phase - 05-26-2016

OK been a long time but I have a workshop again in my new shed so was time to finish the painting on this one . As it wasn't the best kit to start with I wasn't going for accuracy just had a bit of fun with it. I know its not the greatest paint job and when the decals didn't work I rushed painting those and stuffed them up but overall happy just to have it finished. Pics with my phone.
