Stopmo TESB AT-ST - MonsieurTox - 12-13-2009

Hey guys,

Here's some progress of my TESB AT-ST.
First pics are with my scratchbuilt gomo ROTJ AT-ST (it has also an alloy armature) :

Im building it like the actual studio model, I mean very roughly Smile

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - Wombat - 12-13-2009

Crikey,that's most impressive looking!
I somehow think it'll be betta looking than the actual studio model, not that i know how rough the original was,but some of those original models were a little rough afterall.
Some nice engineering you've put into them armature's,i'm sure this one will turn out looking just as good as that ROTJ one you've already got there!

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - JAWS - 12-13-2009

Yeah theyre awsome Julien. I have the plans from Imagineer for the Armiture. Im thinking of getting them made next year sometime. The ROTJ chicken looks fantastic mate & Im sure the ESB will be the same.

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - MonsieurTox - 02-07-2010

Thanks you guys !!

Jase, Im looking forward to see your TESB AT-ST !!

So I bought a built C-600 (thanks bro Smile), it had an heavy coat of paint :

It was a tough task to de-glue the parts :/ I tried to strip the paint off, I still have some area to clean up !

I glued the rail parts at the back of the C-600 parts, parts are not glued on the armature yet :

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - MonsieurTox - 02-08-2010

I have to enlarge the cutout on the karl part but Im pretty done with the upper leg now, and while not 100% perfect, Im happy with the result :

Thanks Al Smile

Ive been in trouble with my AT-ST head. I used an old can of Tamiya primer and it was thick and did bubbles all over the surface of it. The head was ruined. I tried to remove the primer (that's a lacquer so it's quite hard) with thinner, it worked well but some of the kit parts which had stress on it (because they were glued with a bend) broke in several parts (the M5 fender, I used the casting of Steve's kit instead of the original kitpart, I was out of M5). The 232 hatches of the front became soft so I replaced them with parts from a vintage 232 (sharper). The styrene of the head showed some cracks on the surface, only 2 but I fixed them. I hope the head doesnt suffer of more damage I havent noticed.

Well after 3 attempt at spray a coat of primer on it, I was happy with the result and I followed with the body/leg. The upper leg of the non hero side isnt painted because I have to buy another gepard for a part I need so it's unbuilt yet.

That's not perfect but Im happy that I saved the head (I was close to throw it in the air yesterday...).

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - JAWS - 03-18-2010

Nice Julien. Thats a bummer about the paint. guess you will use a fresh can or maybe test it first next time. Good recovery, shame about the cost. Really looks a treat mate.

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - Wombat - 03-21-2010

That is a pain with what happened with the paint there and then the need for some parts replacement along with the other touch ups.But mate,it's looking bloody fantastic, really outstanding building once again there, your works are just incredible dude!

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - MonsieurTox - 04-19-2010

Thank you guys !

Yeah Im happy (and lucky) with the recovery...

She's almost done, I have some parts to add : hexagonal tubing (on the way), intake for the chin gun (on the way), Titan 90 part (on the way as I was not able to find my casting from Nice-N kit), part from the trailer on the right morser part (believe it or not but I lost the sprue lol), Entex part. I'm not sure what to do, this model obvioulsy had the M5 fenders on the non hero side and they came off during shoting or after. But I like the look it has w/o them.

She's not one of my fav model so I reckon that today I rushed the job to finish her. She's like she's, with her defaults. Now some pics :

Tomorrow I'll paint her, thanks for looking !

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - JAWS - 04-20-2010

So what do you use for your paint choice julien? the washes 7 streaking look good. subtle but defined. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Jase !

What do you mean by paint choice ? The brand of the paints Im using or the ref of the colors ?

She's almost done, still have to work on the chassis :

Once again your abilities are shining through with this build,Julien.Thats looking bloody fantastic there mate!!It's something we are all use ta seeing with your builds and i wanna say thanks for sharing it here with us to enjoy. It sure looks just as good and probably even better than what an original model would have been or is.Exceelent dude, good to see it's almost done!!

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - JAWS - 04-21-2010

Julien I meant brand choice if you had a preference. The little sucker is very impressive indeed. Really appreciate you shareing your work with us mate.

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - MonsieurTox - 04-21-2010

Thank you guys !

I'm happy to have this little fellow to go with the ROTJ AT-ST. Now Im miss an AT-AT... probably the next walker ! Ive already collected all the parts for it, just need the armature to be machined...

Jase, it depends of the model but for this one I used Tamiya primer (spray can, as usual), for this one I airbrushed the basecoat (when ILM used a spray can, I do because the result is not the same).

I used Tamiya acrylic for the basecoat, Humbrol enamel for washes, fine details (scratches etc) and modulation and oils from Winsor&Newton for washes, paint chips and modulation.

I've done some more work on the feet :

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - JAWS - 04-21-2010

hey kool. thats pretty much what i use in the same order. The problem lately is I haven't finished any models to paint... Painting is my favourite part. I can get through a military model no problem & have paint on within a day. These Studio models just take so much time & resource before getting anywhere close to getting some paint on them..... But the end result(when i actually get there) should be worth it. Thanks julien its looking great.

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - Wombat - 04-21-2010

Holy crap, that looks killer there,i really like what you've achieved there on that.Nice job!!

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - dbhs - 04-22-2010

The detailing on the foot is incredible. Very nice work.

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - MonsieurTox - 08-06-2010

Thank you very much guys Smile

Ok I can tell she's finished now (the only missing part is the small entex part).

I bought the Titan 90 in April, it was posted by the seller 2 days after I paid (april) and I received it... last week. (from the US)

I bought the 1/20 JPS and... I received a wrong kit, the 1/20 Ferrari 312T3. The seller was fair enought and told me to keep the kit and that he will send another. It arrived 4 days later (always from the US, with the standard airmail option, just like the Titan... 4 days... 4 months... Go figure !).

I'm not 100% satisfied with the paintjob, if I could have another take, I would do the stains differently. But I dont want to ruin the paintjob so I will leave her like she is.

I've added the 2 last parts from the Titan 90 suspension part and the JPS intake. I put the hoses in place (the clear ones are too thin, they come from the 1/12 Tamiya Formula One kits but that's obviously not what they used, should be 0.3-0.5 thicker, but I'll have to leave with that Smile And I can replace them in the future if I can find the right ones.

There was a shiny sunlight so I thought it was the right moment to take some pics. Of course the time I bring the stuff indoor there were big clouds. Now the sun is shinning again.

The bottom point of this thread is that the TESB is a fun and easy build. It can be quick once you got the head done, you just have to cut and glue a few kitparts. The hardest point is to figure how parts were assembled and cut, mainly on the upper non hero leg, as the reference pics are not clear. The paintjob is IMHO the hardest part of this build as it's a uniform light gray, easy to have a flat finish as result, which is not what you want of course (the ILM paintjob is way more subtle, lots of modulation Smile) that means a lot of washes with several colors, the airbrushing weathering is minimal).

Thanks again to Allan for the first draft of plans, Quincy for this awesome V2 armature and Jason for the ref pics.

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - Hammer3246 - 08-06-2010

Great build, always like the chickens.

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - JAWS - 08-06-2010

Wow. Artists are never satisfiedwith their own work J. That is a beautiful replica & asusual have produced an outstanding piece of art & history.

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - dbhs - 08-06-2010

Wow. These are looking really good. I never realized how much difference there is between the two versions. From the front I like the smaller one. From the side, the bigger one. Looking great.

RE: Stopmo TESB AT-ST - PB BB1 - 09-28-2010

Julien, I don't know how you do it. Do you have any plans to do a stop motion video shoot because that thing is ready!

Nice to know there are others out there who have to settle for built kits, and the end result is the same. Don't sweat the paint, enjoy it for what it is... you can always come back to it later. I've got my training remote on the shelf only half finished, with ever intention of completing the matched weathering spot for spot. But for some reason I like to display the clean side instead. lol.

Your weathering feels very real to me. Its hard to spot which technique you used where so you must have done something right. Everything looks different in the final film anyway.

A great thread. Start to finish... very inspirational, and a very cool AT ST.
