I just love this build mate. Ive been following for ages. Thanks for posting it here now. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 01-01-2010 Thanks for the kind words Jason. I'll have more pics in a few days. Happy New Year everyone! RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - erospawn - 01-01-2010 Thats is some awesome work! Maybe one of these days I'll tackle something like that.. maybe

Maybe one of these days I'll tackle something like that.. maybe Thanks Erospawn. All I can say is go for it, it really has been an experience for me to build this ISD. Here's the latest addition to the build,... the communications array. Right now I wish I had a better camera to have taken these two pics. ![]()
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 01-05-2010 Here's a quick update, I finished the Communications Array, added the two detail strips at the top-front and I made two shield domes. ![]() ![]() The domes are held in place with some Post-it putty, I'll glue these to the command bridge and add the support girders next. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 01-05-2010 Outstanding. This is simply amazing work Scratchy. Im just in awe of what you have done. the work in this picture is just mindblowing. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 01-05-2010 Nice. very very nice. What power are you running your lights from? Battery or mains? RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 01-05-2010 I'll be powering this with a 12volt wall plug. I didn't want to deal with batteries. I'll still have to go back into the hull and make some more changes to the lighting, nothing major. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - DarthDuck - 01-06-2010 Hell yeah! A lot of work packed in there already. I especially like the faceted dome work-so intricate. Seeing a build such as this, Monsier Tox's, RELs and such makes it so obvious when someone who does not have any sense of greeblies attempts it. With out of scale parts plopped on like 1/48th scale drop tanks just planted in the middle of nowhere. A very nice effort here, indeed. Keep scratchin' Scratchy!
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 01-06-2010 Thanks for the kind words DarthDuck, as for the greeblies, I have some, but they're almost totally unrecognizable. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 01-28-2010 Here's some images of the start of the details for the domes. I glued the domes to some pieces of rod, ![]() I added some smaller rod and tappered the bottom half of the dome with some A+B epoxy putty, some more details to the base ![]() ![]() For the inner struts, I took the same approach as I did with the crane for the main hanger, I made a pattern and cut and glued the struts together on top of it. ![]() Here's one inner strut glued to the left side ![]() The rest of them Here's a couple more... ![]()
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 01-28-2010 Beautiful. Such delicate details. Fantastic work mate RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 01-29-2010 Thanks for the kind words Jason, once the domes are done the rest of the bridge tower should go by rather quick. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 01-30-2010 I finished the struts for the starboard dome.  I'll finish off the rest of the details in the next couple days except for the spires on the top of each dome, I don't want to risk breaking them off during the build  ![]()
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 01-30-2010 Kick ass work Jay. You can show that beast off in front of your Sculpting A Galaxy book mate. It sure deserves its place. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 02-07-2010 Thanks Jason. Here's another update, I started working on the front face of the Tower. I wanted to put the bridge on her, yeah this isn't visibly shown until ROTJ during the final space battle, but I'm taking elements from everything connected to the Star Destroyer, whether it's from the larger Bridge Tower where the 32" Falcon was filmed on, to the illustrations in the Complete Cross Sections, and iscreen grabs of the hangers to the filming set of the Command Bridge. I used this layout drawing from the Star Wars Technical Journal as a reference for the bridge, reducing the drawing to scale then using it as a template ![]() I used a piece of clear acetate for the bridge and I glued styrene around it, I'll have an LED to light this. Later on, when it's ready for some paint, I'll take a fine brush and paint in the distinct "W" window frames as shown with the following pics ![]() I also added the side coves with the windows.... as shown in this film pic ![]() I took out another camera and shot some pics with it, maybe these will be a little better, here's the full shot of the build ![]() An image of the front of the tower, with the start of the details and the bridge ![]() Here's a couple of the back ![]() ![]() Here's two of the front with some more details ![]() ![]() A lighting test for the bridge ![]()
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 02-08-2010 You are f&^%$#g out there mate! That is the sickest idea adding the bridge to this build. That, your hanger bays with vehicles, your bridge, the domes are all just incrdible Jay. Im just totally blown away by your ability to do such fine work. Thanks for posting all this its simply incredible at this scale. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 02-09-2010 Thank you for the kind words Jason. Oh by the way, your Aussie country men and women have started something up here in Vancouver, the flag shops are sewing up the "Fighting Kangaroo" flag since there is such high demand by us Canadians. Thanks again! RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 02-09-2010 Us Aussies love Canada too. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 02-11-2010 Here are some updated pics, the first two are of the face of the tower with some additional details added, ![]() ![]() Here's the start of the Secondary Engine that I had to rebuild. I found out that a mixing/medicine cup was used for the ANH Star Destroyer, so I found one and scaled it down with the aide of scale master and the shroud calculater programs, I`m not sure what was used for the Avenger, but I think this would do for me. If anyone knows what the actual part was, I`ld be curious to find out. ![]() ![]() I transferred the calculations to some styrene, and with the aide of a compass and protractor, I drew out the pattern, ![]() Placing an Xacto knife in the protractor, I cut along the lines ![]() ![]() I found a hole punch that was the perfect size for the bottom of the cup ![]() I shaped and glued the pieces together, I had to do a little trimming on the shroud until I have what you see here ![]() I`m happy with the results, very close to the actual cup A comparrison pic of the main engine with the secondary, ![]() I`ll need to sand the top flat, I`ll use the rotary tool with the drill press stand, I don`t want to grind down my fingers so I glued the cup to a piece of styrene, ![]() ![]() Slice it off, and sand it down with a fine grit paper ![]() ![]() There, I have the hard part done, now to start detailing it ![]() Thanks for following along RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 02-12-2010 Nice update. Its got f*&%$d how you can work detail with styrene at that scale.... So if your updates are as descriptive as this I may just figure it out. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 02-12-2010 Thanks Jason, When I started the shroud, my intention in my mind was not to build the secondary engine,.... but to scratch a mixing cup to the size that I needed. I find it's easier to have the mindset to scratch an obscure part that someone used for the SS model, then turn it into the needed detail,..... sounds screwed up right, but it works
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 02-12-2010 Yeah I get ya. Youve got to break things down into basic shapes & then think about the smaller shapes that cover it. Very good. Im learning slowly. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 02-15-2010 Here's the end result of the Secondary Engine, some of the tools that I used. What was particularly helpful when I did the square details around the inner rod ( where the LED will go) was the Richard's razor blade holder. This can be found at your local home improvent store in the wall prep and paint section. ![]() I used this tool for the square details. With the aide of a straight edge and a square, I glued the pieces to a flat piece of styrene and chopped the edges straight, and also at a 45 degree angle at the front. Then I took a file to a few, using my reference image to determine where the notches on five of them should be. I sliced them off the styrene, repositioned and reglued them two more times and chopped some off along the edges to give me a uniform part, while fitting them on the engine. ![]() I added the rest of the details and here's the final images of the engine. I'll make a mold of this part and cast what I need. ![]() ![]() Once the casted pieces are made, I'll drill a hole in the front center, turn it around and redrill another wider hole halfway through so an LED will fit snuggly. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 02-18-2010 Here's some more detail shots of the front face of the tower. ![]() ![]() ![]()
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 02-18-2010 Thats amazing. That ship facade is so menacing even at that scale. Makes my skin cringe like the first time I saw a Star Destroyer..... RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 02-22-2010 (02-18-2010, 04:21 PM)jasonwright.1972 Wrote: Thats amazing. That ship facade is so menacing even at that scale. Makes my skin cringe like the first time I saw a Star Destroyer..... Thanks Jason, I get the same feeling. I've done a little work over the weekend, here's three more pics with some more detail added to the Tower. I've been concentrating on the port side of the face. I'm starting to take the approach, that this build is a marathon with no finish line. ![]() ![]()
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 02-23-2010 Im taking that same aproach cause I can't seem to finish anything. Someones going to chime in & say "You got too many builds on your bench!" & well maybe so, but when you have to waite for supplies & maybe funds for those supplies its good to have something else to potter on. It just sucks when your waiting for supplies on pretty much all the builds........................... This fantastic Scratchy that detail is outstanding. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 02-24-2010 Thanks Jason, I have a few on the go as well, but this one will remain active. The others are more parts collections and castings, preparing for when I start those builds. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 03-10-2010 Here's three pics with the work that I've done since the last update. I did some work on three other builds other than the ISD. I managed to make a mold for the secondary engines and poured four casts. I applied some epoxy putty to the few bubbles that are visible. ![]() Here they are in the standard configuration ![]() Some more additional detail to the tower ![]() Thanks for following along RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - DarthDuck - 03-10-2010 This continues to amaze and impress Scratchy! ![]() You've got a masterpiece in the making!
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 03-11-2010 I've seen your work DarthDuck, coming from you that's a huge compliment, thank you! RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 03-11-2010 Hey I got a great idea. How about you mould the whole thing up & send me a copy! RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 03-11-2010 Ohhhh...... just thinking of all the work needed for the molds is giving me a headache. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 03-13-2010 Here's some pics of the light test of the main and secondary engines, I dropped these on an LED clip light, but later on I'll have an Ultra Bright LED in them. The main engines ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The secondary engine. A lot of light pollution is showing through. I've read in SAG, that when the boys at ILM created the Starfield, they sprayed the backside with silver paint to make the sheet opaque. What I'll do with the secondaries is prime, a coat of silver on the inside and the basecoat on the outside. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Any opinions, suggestions, comments, insults or threats would be appreciated....... RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 03-13-2010 Very nice my friend. i love light tests. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 03-13-2010 Thanks for the compliments Jason and 427 Cobra! RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 05-01-2010 Thanks guys for the kind words. I've been out of the game for awhile. I managed to paint the secondary engines and test for any light bleeding through. I sprayed them with a silver, inside and out, followed up with a flat black, finishing with the base coat ![]() Here's one engine in normal light with an LED ![]() Another with the lights dimmed down in the room, no light pollution
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 05-01-2010 Alright Scratchy's in the house! Nice to have you back mate. Those engines are looking great. Guess youve been pretty busy with work. Hope to see some more updates soon. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 05-03-2010 thanks Jason. Yeah it's been crazy over here. I finally got back to some modelling. Working on the Anigrand 1/2256 Nebulon B Medical Frigate. Just adding some extra detail to it and the lights that I threw in it looks pretty good too
RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - dbhs - 05-03-2010 How big is the Nebulon B at 1/2256? Thats insane! Are you going to show us? RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 05-03-2010 I'm holding off on pics online until it's completed. Sorry. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - JAWS - 05-03-2010 Fair enough but youve certainly built the interest for that little unveiling I'll tell ya now. RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - erospawn - 05-04-2010 So.. one question here .. What color did you or are you going to use to paint the ISD? I used Camoflage Gray.. Its not a neutral gray however. Looks like the gray seen here: http://www.relishmodels.co.uk/model-master-enamel-fs36622-camouflage-gray.html RE: Scratchbuilt Star Destroyer 1/2222 scale - scratchy - 05-04-2010 I mixed a 7:1 ratio of Model Master Flat White FS37875 and Light Grey FS36495 for the basecoat. I'll paint lighter and darker shades for sections of the hull. I sprayed the engines and the two hanger bays already. |
