X-Wing red leader - CC kit - Scott Graham - 01-04-2010 Hi guys, Time to get on it again. I first posted this back in April last year. Since that time I've acquired some mini flashlights that I'm going to use for lighting it, and a new cockpit generously cast and sent to me by Matt Myer. I also got one from Mike Salzo, but it wasn't enough like any of the full-size cockpits that I'm trying to replicate. Mike did provide me with the plug that goes in the back of the fuselage, and the correct wing mechanism detail parts. As these additional items weren't made for the CC version, some trimming down is needed - especially on the cockpit. Here it is so far. I've made panel mods, including some panel chips on the top of the wing, not shown, to look more like the reference I have. Proportion problems are going to remain. I want to make this first x-wing build without making too much of a fuss out of it. I've also made the wing wells more like a hero by adding minimal strip styrene to the perimeter of the openings. It works great by dropping a shadow on the sidewalls so you don't see them easily. It was .030x.040 strip styrene by evergreen. I don't think it makes the openings very much smaller than usual. Any feedback is welcome. I'll post more as it goes along. RE: X-Wing red leader - CC kit - 79 Daytona - 01-04-2010 Great start!! Say is that the V1 CC kit. RE: X-Wing red leader - CC kit - JAWS - 01-04-2010 Sweeet Scott. This will be a nice build considering the quality of your others I have seen. Will be watching this bird come to life. Is Mike still casting this original version? or just the new one? Looks like everyones got their building hats on early this year. RE: X-Wing red leader - CC kit - Scott Graham - 01-04-2010 Thanks guys. Yes, I think it's the v1 CC kit. I believe v2 is where salzo started, so yes. What really gives it away, I think, is that the wing mechanism area looked like gears. Jason: Mike has just been casting the v3.1 new version. He might do another round this year. He's usually not casting when it's winter over here. As far as being a red 1 - I think the paint job will tell the story nicely. RE: X-Wing red leader - CC kit - Wombat - 01-04-2010 Yep,thats looking ta be a good start there. I like what you are doing with the detailing,it always makes em look that much betta when they are done! Not to mention it is actually a lot of fun just doing what you are doing also. RE: X-Wing red leader - CC kit - Scott Graham - 12-31-2015 ...6 years later and it's done. I tried to make every tick mark you can see in photos of it. Red leader had minimal grunge compared to a lot of x-wings, and minimal reference means some of the paint job was guesswork. As I was shooting it, I noticed some bare resin in the front cockpit area under the canopy: something still to be done. I'm showing it with a pilot figure although most pics of it don't show a pilot at all. You can still see the pilot in the trench side view shot with red 5 in the foreground. Also, it seemed they used a regular R2 unit painted red and white in some shots and in the same trench pic just mentioned. It's not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with it. RE: X-Wing red leader - CC kit - 3phase - 12-31-2015 Mate that's a great job. You almost take as long as me on a build RE: X-Wing red leader - CC kit - Scott Graham - 01-01-2016 Thanks. I just let it sit in a box unassembled. Trying to paint it right seemed intimidating to me. So it just took a few days of work to finally complete it when I decided enough was enough. Painting is my favorite part of modeling. RE: X-Wing red leader - CC kit - Wombat - 01-11-2016 Good call on pulling ya finger out and getting stuck into it again. Well when something turns out as fine as that it'd say it was a good call anyway. Really turned out looking the part, Scott. Well done! |
