Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-13-2009 Hi all, Here's some progress photos for the SS Raider I'm working on. This is one of my all time favorite ships so I'm giving it a lot of attention. There's more pics at my site here: dbhs modeler. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 11-13-2009 Nice choice of project. i should have a Studio scale Raider landing at my place soon also. Its not a Salzo. Its an old kit that has 3 Cylons & cokpit with a lighting kit. Can't waite for it to arrive. Will be watching this thread Douge. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 11-13-2009 It's a fantasic kit this one,and we can see you ain't messing around with this one either. You detail junkie you!!Again, looking good there my friend,it's taken awhile for you to dust this one off but you'll have it done in no time bud!Keep them picture's a coming!! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - swhite228 - 11-14-2009 Very nice! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-14-2009 Thanks guys. I was working on attaching the wings last night and everything went smooth as could be until I stepped back and realized that one was hanging down lower than the other. ![]() I can't have that !!! Had to plug up the holes. I'll re-do tonight. Man, this thing just looks killer when the wings go on. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 11-14-2009 I know what you mean there,it's a killer looking thing!! The wing thing happen's dude.I had to plug mine also and re do as well. I'm just not good enough to get it right the first time myself! But it's the end result that we all see! ![]() Keep at it there!!
RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-15-2009 The inside edge of the left wing is at a slightly different angle than the other one. I'm adding a strip along the edge of the piece between the body and the wing to correct for this. It's such a subtle angle and on the edge of a curved piece. Its really amazing it is as accurate as it is. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-16-2009 Completed surface detailing. Modified details in white styrene and brass and changes to the panels lines. Light test on the engines. Light test on the front lights. For the front lights I wanted to duplicate the look in the inset photo. I shaped clear plastic lights at the front connected to the lights with thick 1.5mm fiber optic. Between the LEDs and the fiber optic I put in an amber colored lighting gel. Black electrical tape covers the LED to help reduce light leaks around the canopy. I also added the small metal tube detail in the grille to match the studio model. Here's the stand I made so I can paint all sides at the same time. Thanks for looking -Doug RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 11-16-2009 Wow this is looking fantastic Doug! I love seeing brass & styrene on these in progress builds. Like a beautiful woman in her Victoria Secrets, beautiful! Love this thread & thanks for sharing your talent. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-16-2009 Thanks, Jase. I have a guest staying here this week so I had to clean up the shop. I set up the model with all the parts just sitting on top to show it off. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - erospawn - 11-16-2009 Thats really really awesome! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 11-16-2009 Nice, very nice there dude! I like the detailing you've done there,it's gonna look great when you splash some primer on it. I hope your guest understand's there modeling ta be done while they are there?? If not they will soon aye??
RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-16-2009 "If anyone needs me I'll be in the shop - these models aren't going to build themselves" RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 11-16-2009 Hey Doug, love your site man. Those pictures are just wicked mate. Love you work mate. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 3d-builder - 11-16-2009 Awesome fighter back in the day and present!! Love the brass on her and the lighting, can't wait to see it finished up! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-17-2009 Thanks, Jase and 3D !!! Glad you like the site. It was fun to put that together. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Recycle - 11-17-2009 Very nice so far indeed! Just acquired one of these myself, so I'll be keeping an eye on your progress. Jason, mine also has pilots, but no lighting kit. I may have to add a little additive. That lighting dbhs is doing makes a difference. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-17-2009 The version I'm doing is from Mike Salzo and it comes with LED lights and reflectors and no pilots or cockpit. The geometries of the 2 versions are just slightly different. There are a few threads over on RI about a year ago that discuss the reasons behind these differences. Unless you see them compared in photos side by side you can't really tell any difference. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 427 Cobra - 11-21-2009 (11-16-2009, 07:51 AM)jasonwright.1972 Wrote: Wow this is looking fantastic Doug! I especially love the white contrast against the off-white resin, and brass tubing. This gives it that brand new look! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-21-2009 Thanks, guys. I started assembly tonight but ran out of glue so I'm off to the hardware store in the morning. I can always seem to justify a trip to the hardware store each weekend. I can't seem to remember to tell the wife that most of the basement of the hardware store is also the LHS. ![]() Damn memory
RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 11-21-2009 LOL!! Pitty about that damn memory aye?
RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 11-22-2009 Outstanding work dbhs !!! Can't wait to see more!! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-23-2009 Thanks, guys. I got all the pieces assembled and have some joint touch ups underway. I had the fortunate problem of having 2 right wings shipped with the kit. Mike got a replacement to me as soon as I noticed (Thanks, Mike !!). Now I have an extra right wing so I'll take a stab at doing some damage to it and keeping the other studio-accurate. Hopefully the last detail I found on the reference photos is shown below. There's these very small tubes sticking out on the top and bottom sides of the ship. They seem to line up with each other. I'm speculating that they are electrical connections since they are right next to the mounting points. Anyway, I added these details to the model as shown. The guns and engine fins will be attached after painting. I need to finish up a little putty on the seams and then primer it. The stand I have it on now is pretty good. Puts it right in front of my face on the bench. Thanks for looking. -Doug RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 11-23-2009 I commented elsewhere about the detailing you're doing but it's worth saying it again. This is gonna be sweet with a splash of paint and some weathering thrown at it! I really like your attention to detail it like one of the original filming minature's. I think this'll be the best one i've seen done yet when she's all done! Good work there mate!
RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - DarthDuck - 11-23-2009 Just one frakin sweet job so far DUDE! If I may- it looks like you might be using Squadron Green Putty? If so, you can thin it with lacquer thinner, even to the point it's applicable like thick paint with a brush! Saves a lot of time on cleanup sanding.
RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-24-2009 Thanks for the tip, Don. The LHS was out of the white putty i have been using. I'm not too happy with the white putty anyway so I didn't mind trying something different. (Though I don't like experimenting in the middle of an important model where I may f--- things up. The white putty isn't strong enough for fixing fine details and I'm already seeing where I have to re-do some places where I filled in panel lines and the white putty needs to be redone. I need to convert to bondo or Aves. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 11-24-2009 Looking GOOD!! Your work is truly outstanding!! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-29-2009 Here's a little update tonight. The main body is in primer now. The damaged wing in progress and the resin hollowed out. I'm really hacking it up. I figure if I'm going to damage it I might as well really tear it up. Taking a clue from the mis-aligned plate toward the front, my idea is to make it look like a damaged wing with some repair work done to patch it up just enough to get back to base. I'll add a couple more plates over some exposed framing and piping inside. Working on the bits to add into the damaged area. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 11-29-2009 Oh hell yeah doug that will look trick! Can't waite to see this even more now. Great idea for the 'spare' wing. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 11-29-2009 Credit goes to Phil who sparked this idea when I mentioned the wing mishap to him. He's a clever chap !!! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 11-29-2009 He ain't that clever i can tell ya! ![]() Look's like this one got a lil close to the Galactica laser batteries but lived to tell the story.. Mate i can't tell ya how cool i think this is gonna be! I think i was visioning a bit smaller hole, but what the heck, you are right,if ya gonna do it you might as well go the full hog! ![]() Can't wait to see what you throw inside there but already those couple of bit's you scratched up look sweet and will look right at home in there. This build has just gone to another level again, you're really punching out some cool stuff there my friend!! BTW,good to see it in primer there also!!
RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 11-30-2009 Looking GOOD!!! The damage wing is going to look so cool can't wait to see it all together. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 12-02-2009 Time just blew past me tonight so I'll have to show some more detailed progress pics tomorrow but here's where the damaged wing ended up tonight. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 12-02-2009 Um no picture Doug? RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 12-02-2009 I can see it - it's a link to the photo uploaded to RI. I added the pic to this post as well. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 12-02-2009 Sorry mate its there now. looks sweet as I said at RI! Seriously this will look awsome mate. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 427 Cobra - 12-03-2009 Is this damage intentional,or accidental?
RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 12-03-2009 (12-03-2009, 02:58 AM)427 Cobra Wrote: Is this damage intentional,or accidental? Maybe an intentional accident (if there can be such a thing). I had a thought last night that I should paint the bolted on panels to look like they are parts from damaged vipers that the Cylons had scavanged together. Maybe a piece of a wing section that has a portion of the orange stripe still showing. What do you think? Too hokey? What good are viper parts to a cylon other than for patching up raiders? RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 12-03-2009 That is looking outstanding!!!! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 12-03-2009 That's looking sweet there so far! I'd probably throw some more crap in there as well still or perhaps you still are? As for the Viper panels, well for me i probably wouldn't.I'd prefer it to be more original looking, with the different colour panels being one's that have been replaced already before this occurrence? But this is your build bud and i say do what YOU wanna do! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 12-04-2009 I agree with you, Phil. That came up when I was thinking of ways to make the repair parts look different enough that they read as “new pieces added on†instead of part of the mess of framing of the broken wing. Maybe just a different color of metal with different rust/weathering effect will do. I’m going to add in a few more bits and loose wires to fill in the gaps. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 12-04-2009 Cool,i'd like to see some more of that plumbing style of stuff in there, and perhaps not to much more of the pipe and wire's.Hell, just send the wing down here to me will ya??This is just gonna be so cool mate!! As for the panels, look i think you should do what appeal's to you most,i'm just more a traditionalist when it come's to my BSG and probably most subject's really. But i like the idea of having this as a repaired wing previously over time with different panels already replaced and thus in different shades of colour,so it should look like that but now it's just had the living shit blown outa it. This was already looking to be the best Raider i'd seen done with those small attentions to detail you did and now you got this bloody wing as well. Bastard!!! ![]()
RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 12-04-2009 Thanks. I added in a bit more stuff. Most of this wil be covered up by the panels but it's good to get that detail in there. Here's the other progress pictures and updates as of tonight. Internal wing framing and piping and whatnot added to the inside. The edges have putty added to level up the damaged plating to the original surface. The goal is to make it look seamless to the original skin. The internal framing is lined up with the panel lines so it is looking as functional as possible. Plating being added in. After cutting the jagged edge I held the pieces just above a soldering iron to soften it up and then bent up the edges. Plating added in. First pass on the putty and sanding to blend the plating into the original surface. Also added a few more details to the inside. The white plates on top (plus the original plate in the front with the angled corner) will be the "repair work" done to patch up the damage. I need to go over the joints until they're as smooth as possible and then rescibe the panel lines. I located the edges of most of the new panels on the panel lines so most joints will be hidden by the scribing. I'm not sure I'm going to add the large piece with the holes in it. Seem out of place and I think the flat panels look more like repair panels. I'm just making this up as I go so feedback is welcome !!! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 12-06-2009 That looks GREAT!!! I don't know but the large hole piece seem to look out of place to my eyes. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 12-06-2009 Thanks, guys. I got some very helpful feedback on this. It's great to get a variety of opinions and suggestions as everyone has a different take on it. It's also easier to be objective when it's not your model so - I really appreciate the effort that was put out. I'm going to do some re-working on it this weekend. I think it will be a big improvement. Thanks, again. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 12-06-2009 Other idea's can be good at time's and give a different view but in the end you're building this for yourself. You just do what feel's right to you Doug, you're the only one that need's to be satisfied in the end. But while you're taking suggestion's,how bout you just box it all up and send to me mate?
RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - 79 Daytona - 12-06-2009 I agree with what Phil said but you can ship it to me the shipping cost would be cheaper. LOL
RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - JAWS - 12-06-2009 I'll settle this Doug. Just ship it to me! RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - dbhs - 12-06-2009 Hmmmm. Who to send it to. ........? This could take some thought...... a lot of thought. Might be a few years before I can decide. You'll just have to wait. RE: Studio Scale Cylon Raider (Salzo V2 Kit) - Wombat - 12-06-2009 Thats OK,just let me know when you've chosen ME so i can send you my addy!!
