Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 01-13-2010

My new project is a scratch-built Studio Scale model of a Ralph McQuarrie concept design for the Cylon Raider. This concept was not used for the show in favor of the Raider that we all know and love. To my knowledge a model has never been built of this concept design. I'm calling this a Studio Scale model because I will be building it in 1:35 scale to match the scale of the Studio Raider.

http://www.galactica.tv/battlestar-galactica-1978-news/ralph-mcquarrie-concept-sketches.html has a lot of McQuarrie's sketches and there's some really good ideas for scratch builds in there.

This sketch and the one above are the only two reference sketches that I have found for this design but they show enough of the ship to extrapolate the design for a scale model.

To round out the scratch built parts I'm going to add just a few kit parts from the Leopold and Morser Karl that were used on the studio model. The kit parts will be used in keeping with the design but will add just a little 'lineage' to keep this in the Cylon Raider family. Phil (Wombat) is helping me out with some parts from his stash. Thanks, Phil !!!

This photo show the Studio Scale Cylon Raider kit next to a 1:35 drawing of the Concept Raider. The Concept Raider is a slightly smaller craft as it is a single-pilot ship. In physical dimensions the model will be just under 16" from nose to tail.

My first step was to draw up to-scale plans in AutoCAD. The plan view-sketch was very helpful getting started but after a while I started noticing subtle differences in the design between the two drawigns. I really liked the feel of the perspective sketch so I used that as my reference whenever something didn't match.

Final orthagonal drawings, top view.

Final orthagonal drawings, bottom view.

The shape of the hull has subtle compound curves so I'm using AutoCAD to study the geometry and generating the series of ribs that will create this curve on the skin.

Here are the sets of ribs and other pieces that will be cut out of styrene. I'm planning on printing these out on transparent stick-on film and using them as templates for cutting the styrene.

Most of the ribs and parts are ready to go so the next step is to start cutting styrene.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - DarthDuck - 01-13-2010

VERY cool project, indeed!

I loved seeing how certain elements were similar yet different- like how one gets the wing tips at the same time the other loses them. An interesting study between the two.

Thanks for sharing this- it will be fun to watch and I can't wait to view your usual excellence in a finished piece!Cool

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 01-13-2010

This is the sort of stuff we need a good WTF! for. Great idean Doug. What happenned to your Shuttle idea?

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - Wombat - 01-13-2010

Now this one is gonna be really cool to watch being built up!
I've known for a little while this one has been on the drawing board so to speak and i personally think it's gonna be something very special,i actually like the design of this one quite a lot! That it's something thats never been done to my knowledge either will make it a very special build.
As you can all see,Doug knows a thing or two about drawing stuff up on a computer,me,i have know idea how it's done, but from what i've seen of his drawings this thing is gonna be fantastic. He's really thought out the whole thing and i'm keen to see the drawings transfered to the styrene and it start taking some real shape.
I'm more than happy to be able to contribute a few little part's to such a fantastic project mate!!

Looking forward to the drydock action!!Cool

What I'm seeing on the shuttle is that nearly all of the parts are scaled a either a little or a lot in the design. Most are scaled enough that original kit parts won't be usable unless the overall look is changed. For now I'm going to wait until JT graphics announces the size they'll go with for their version.

Thanks, Phil. I'm planning on cutting styrene tonight. I think the transfer method of the film to the ribs should be straightforward. I'm going to try the same thing with the layout on the disc the ribs will be glued to but not sure how that will work. My plan is to trim out the film where the ribs glue down but if the styrene glue reacts to the film I might have problem. If it does I'll have to mark the styrene through the film and then re-draw the layout. Not the end of the world but another tedious step.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 01-14-2010

Impressive computer skills Dougy. You are a Dark horse aren't you...

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 01-15-2010

Big Grin

Styrene time !!!

Transferring the pattern to the styrene went really well. It was a little tricky to get the top and bottom to line up exactly but I got it really close.

This is making cutting the ribs out to the right size really easy.

Here's the bottom flat section getting glued up.

This is what I printed the drawing on to. Sticks great to the styrene and luckily it doesn't get melted by the solvent glue. Doesn't seem to react at all. I do have to trim out the label film where each rib goes so the styrene will contact styrene.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 01-15-2010

I gotta get me some computer training... This is fucking outstanding! If you had a 3D printer you could do some serious model damage with you skills. I am surrounded by geniouses & Im rediculously jelous....

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 01-15-2010

As soon as the house is paid off I'm getting a 3-D printer. 26 years to go. Big Grin

Actually I'm hoping they are cheap enough to get at home within 5 years. Wouldn't that be cool !

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - Wombat - 01-15-2010

Wow Doug, thats really impressive mate.Even more so as it look's even betta printed out like that than in the computer drawings.
Thats some nice work already mate!!You are off to a really good start and this looks like it's gonna be a fun build, you sould get a real lotta satisfaction creating this one.i know i'm gonna enjoy seeing the build up and final piece.

You hold onto them files now!!Wink

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 01-16-2010

Doug Ive been looking at this also. Rapid Prototypeing looks like alot of fun & could be very rewarding.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 01-17-2010

Spent a lot of time on this today and got a little bit done. Most of the time was spent on the scoop on the bottom side. I don't have a vacuum former so I had to improvise to get the styrene bent to shape. I did two before this one that I had to scrap but this one turned out ok.

The scoop will go on after the rest of the ribs and some of the plating are down.

Wow Doug your blowin me away.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - Wombat - 01-20-2010

Thats looking fucking excellent!!
I really like how you are going about this build,it should turn out fantastic going on what we are looking at in the latest pictures mate. That location map there is excellent for getting all them rib's in there precise position.
Coming along very nicely!!

You ever heard of CarveWright? They are pretty cheap.. and the end product does look pretty good. I've thought about getting one myself.. But, I need to justify spending $1500.00 for something like that first Big Grin

We'll, running out of styrene put a little hitch in my gettalong.

Here's where I ended up.

$1500.00 cheap??? Huh,uh!! I made my own duplicating carver, but it's being stored in pieces at a friends' garage. This isn't something you'd want to use on styrene - it's too soft! This would overheat it,and cause it to melt to the cutting bit,at least whatever didn't get torn up,and thrown from the machine. A vac-former is your best bet. I'm getting ready to make my own vacuumformer. I'm being commisioned to make a canopy for a member of another modeling forum. I'll use the vacformer for this, although I'm planning on making a couple of scratch made versions of it.

I need to get my uncles' trunk fixed THIS WEEK without fail! I need the money, and the parts for this machine,so I can get that much done, and hopefully have enough left over to pay for a better camera someday. The one I won is supposed to come this week - IF paypal comes through. A vacformer would be a lifesaver for many projects that I have planned.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - MonsieurTox - 01-20-2010

That's a very cool project, I love it !

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - Wombat - 01-20-2010

WTF,running outa styrene is like running outa CA.It shouldn't happen!!
I hope you are pick some up soon, like as in tomorrow wouldn't be soon enough, but we'll make exceptions THIS time!Tongue
Wow this is really coming together nicely Doug, very nicely indeed!!Cool

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 01-21-2010

Thanks for going easy on me. I'll try not to let you down again.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 01-22-2010

Just a quick update tonight. This is the first layer of the hull on the bottom. This is 1/16" styrene to span over the ribs so the shape of the ridges doesn't telegraph through. Over this will be a layer of .5mm styrene that will extend all they way to the edge of the disc. The shape of the curve is pretty subtle and a bit lost in these photos. I think it will be more visible once the panel lines are scribed on.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - Wombat - 01-22-2010

You seem too be thinking of everything there, thats a good idea using the two skins!
This looks to be going together very well there, some most impressive progress you've made in a real short time mate!
Most of all, you're having fun,it's hard to believe already this is all just from sheet styrene.
Excellent work thus far!!

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - 427 Cobra - 01-23-2010

I wish my build on the X-wing used clean elegant lines like this that are easier to work with, and still provide a beautiful shape. This looks so cool!

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - erospawn - 01-23-2010

Looking very clean so far....great job!

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 01-25-2010

Lovin your work mate.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 02-01-2010

Thanks for the feedback, guys. I got a lot done this weekend.

I sacrificed a couple of pens to build the guns. There's some additional parts from the pens that I can use on this as well.

Here is the projection under the engines under construction.

Here it is with the rib detailing added on. The two flat areas directly forward of this will have big grilles placed in them. I'm going to use the grilles from the Centurion Tank Wink for these (used on the top part of the Studio Raider behind the cockpit). The details on that piece will look good there.

Here's the top view of the same area. I need to finish up around the engine compartment and then start working on the ribs on the top side.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - Wombat - 02-01-2010

Sweet!

Thats some nice progress there mate,it's still all looks to be going together very well for ya there.I'm most impressed with the way you've planned this all out pretty much,it look's to be making the job that little bit easier perhaps. The pens are a great idea,it's amazing what items can be used to get something that looks the part when scratch building. The simplest things can have a perfect shape and even fit sometimes for te job in hand.
Good thinking on those pen's and also the Centurion part is a good idea just for keeping it in the family with the Cylon Raider we all know.
Excellent progress bud!!

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - 3d-builder - 02-01-2010

Very nice I like all the rib work!

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - 427 Cobra - 02-02-2010

I love the industrial look that this has to it. I wish I could get oridinary items to match what I need like you guys do. I only got lucky like that once in the thirty plus years that I've been building, and making models! Most of the time I have to make what I need completely from scratch. I guess that's how I learned. I can't wait for the end result.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 02-02-2010

Very kool Doug. Is coming up a treat.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 02-02-2010

Thanks, guys.

Yeah, the pens were a stroke of luck that they were the right size. I had been planning to use brass tubing but realized the stuff I had wasn't the right size. I pulled out all the pens we had at home and these worked perfect. I managed to save the insides that will work great for the gun barrels as well as some tubing around the engines.

I don't think I implied using Styrene with it??

No one ever said you did,Ron - no one ever said you did. A "Carvewright" isn't 3-D printer, it's a carving machine only.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 02-08-2010

I got the ribs on the top side done and finished up the sides of the engine compartments. I also started cutting out the top side plating but not far along enough for pics just yet.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 02-08-2010

Ohhhh! Teaser.... Thats not nice! The builds looking good Doug.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 02-08-2010

LOL !!

Uh, it's really not ready. You're just addicted to styrene, that's all.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - Wombat - 02-08-2010

Well styrene in that form looks pretty addictive!

Wow,that looks bloody awesome, this thing looks extremely well engineered now that it's all coming together how it is.
It's gonna be a shame to hide all that with the skin's really!
Mate,thats looks absolutely fantastic!!

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - 427 Cobra - 02-09-2010

I love the open ribbed, industrial look that this has to it! Especially with all the little numbers, and letters denoting which part goes where. This looks like something Ames would've designed. This almost looks like a house in the begining stages. I wish I had one just like this. Very cool!

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 02-09-2010

Thanks, guys. The numbers on the ribs are necessary to keep them organized. The differences are just too subtle to see easily. That's really the easiest part of this build so far. I couldn't plan out every detail and every piece or I would have been drawing forever. I'm spending most of my time working on all the other details.

I noticed yesterday that the ring at the top looks too wide in the physical form even though it looked good on paper so I'm going to re-do that. The cockpit is an unknown at this point to and I'm going to make that up as I go.....got to have a little freedom here LOL !!

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 02-12-2010

Working on the engines now to take a little break from the styrene stuff. I'm using several different parts to make the shape of each engine and am mounting them on a metal tube. I was going to extend the same tube into the body and glue it in place but I was realizing that it will be much more convenient to attach them permanently later on. So for this I glued in a sleeve for the first tube to slide into. I'd like to get them painted up separately before gluing them in but I need to figure out how the lighting will factor in to that plan.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 02-12-2010

Very interesting Doug. I love the recylcleing that scratch building utalises. This getting better & better every time you touch it.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - Wombat - 02-12-2010

They work frakin perfectly there Doug!

Looking great mate!!

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 02-15-2010

Thanks, guys. I got all 4 engines done and some brass piping that straddles the tail fin finished yesterday. Now I'm working on the cockpit, trying out using FO for lighting. I have to get all the lighting and wiring figured out now before I put the plating on the top side. Pretty tedious but it's coming along. Will post some progress picks later today.

RE: Studio Scale McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 02-16-2010

Here's the status from last night:

The dashboard in the cockpit.

Here it is with the lights turned on. I'll be adding color to the lights. To illuminate the screen I mounted the FO to project on to the back side of the clear frosted screen.

Cockpit seat.

I wanted to make the grilles on the top open but the rough part of the inside was visbile through them so this is an inner detail that will be visible through the grille.

The view through the grille.
