1/12th ANH X-Wing Fighter - eagle1 - 01-30-2010

Hi guys, here's some progress on this build, namely the wings and cannons. Cannon parts are fabricated from machined Plastruct tubes, machined aluminium alloy and acrylic and brass. Still a few parts to make including the heat sink part made from machined alloy or acrylic.

I plan to exhibit this model at a major Sci-Fi show here in NZ in October, so I really need to get cracking and churn out the parts required.

I really need to start the fuselage next month and work out the alloy armature so I'll post more pics soon.

Damn,Stu! This looks good! I'm glad to see that you haven't given up on this. It's been a long time since we've seen an update anywhere from you. I had to stop production on mine because, the camera I was using just stopped working - I have no way of posting photos without a camera USB cable,or memory card. I'm waiting for the manufacturer to reply to my email about the cable - they better hurry! I'm already pissed, because I haven't made a single part since the first week of this month! I can make parts, but I can't show the in between stages from start to finish. This was my initial intent from the begining.

I just can't wait to see your version of this complete, and painted! Are you going to make a universal R2,or are you going to make all the R2,R5,and R4 units that these had? I'm thinking about making an R5-D4 model for those who want a Red leader version,so that it'll be accurate to the life sized bird.

RE: 1/12th ANH X-Wing Fighter - eagle1 - 01-31-2010

Many thanks for the good words guys, much appreciated!.

I hadn't been around here for a while due to me trying to find the site again and re-register, but I had been plugging away on this build in the meantime!.

It is an insane build, constructing the parts in this scale is just incredible and takes up a fair amount of time and cash!. But having the parts built and in your hand is just so gratifying and you think wow, I'm going to have an amazing model here when completed.

I feel there seems to be a surge in the SS world for bigger models and people are responding well to this build, not just here but on various other forum sites as well. As for me I'm swayed to bigger models myself, although I'm glad I did the Tie Bomber first, a good learning curve.

I'm fortunate in that the machining of the alloy and acrylic costs me virtually nothing, if I had to add this to the cost it would add thousands to the total build cost!.

I'm looking forward to the fuselage construction next month, that will be fun and then I'll really feel it's on it's way well and truly!.

Hi mate, yeah long time talking with you bro!.
I have looked at your build, she's coming on great dude, the ref pics you have are awesome of the 'Jedi' version.
I'm not to sure of the R2 version I'll do as yet, but possibly a variety is in order to make. I'm not even sure I'm doing a particular X-Wing as it's really going to be a generic representation of all the smaller SS models with me picking the details I like of each one, but in essence you would really have to look hard to place each detail to a particular ship!.

As for the paint job, well, I'm really going to have to think about that one for a while!.

A fantastic start!

I'm a sucker for metal turned on a lathe and of course you've given me some eye candy with this one.

That fucker's big enough for a trained squirrel to pilot it? Don't wait for volunteers- just grab an unsuspecting squirrel and strap a helmet on him!Tongue

I've totaly enjoyed this build. Amazing talent. I know monsters like this can take it out of ya. Large scale builds take alot of thinking, and time. Don't rush it. Can't wait to see you pick this project up again.
Cheers,Big Grin

RE: 1/12th ANH X-Wing Fighter - eagle1 - 12-16-2012

Well, I have got back onto this again of late. Stops & starts but want to get this done before concentrating fully on the 5' Falcon hull.

My original plan for the fuselage did not work for me, so started again using solely styrene for everything, much better now & in the end will be less labour intensive. The size & thickness of the styrene can be intimidating at times, but loving the quickness that can be achieved.

All the parts that I would want 3-D printed have been done, which has saved a ton of work on the detailing pieces.Big Grin

Oh, I wasn't happy with my wing skins, being the wrong thickness, so redoing these too. I had 2mm for all skins, now changing to a more accurate 3mm for the outer skin. I decided if I left them as they were, it would bug the heck out of meDodgy

I will post up pics after a bit more progress made.

Thanks for the kudo's & interest in this chaps, means alot.
Stu

Sounds like ya got everything covered pretty much there. Now hopefully ya get some free time and can really get stuck into it a bit more.
Look forward to seeing those pics when ya ready.
