Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - directorcass - 03-28-2010

O.K. here are the first set of pics for my Holy Grail of model kits. A big freakin Star Destroyer! I hope to have this monster done for Wonderfest in a month and a half. It's going to be close.

So it's going to be lit with 24 LEDs in total. All powered by a 3v, 1amp regulated power supply I got from RadioShack for $21. There are 16 white LEDs that will hold the fiber optic strands for the 800 .75mm windows that were drilled. Each LED has a plastic "cup" that the fibers will be glued into with 5 minute epoxy. Seven blue LEDs light the engines. The last white LED, all by its lonesome, lights the scratch built garbage bay on the back of the neck. That's where the garbage came out in ESB the Falcon and Slave 1 floated off with.

It's hard to get good pics of something white with white lights. I will post more soon. Click on each picture for a big version with caption.
Enjoy!

RE: Anigrand Star Destroyer WIP! - erospawn - 03-28-2010

Thats going to be pretty awesome... I plan on getting the Anigrand Star Destroyer too.. the only issue I have with that is it comes out of Hong Kong.. aka international shipping and customs and the amount of time.. Where did you get yours? As for the LED's, are you sure 3 volts is going to be enough? Technically it should be I suppose, as some LED"s require 3.2volts .. just depends on the LED.

RE: Anigrand Star Destroyer WIP! - directorcass - 03-28-2010

Thanks, it's been a fun build so far. Cutting 12 inch lengths of fiber optic out of 800 feet, however, is not fun. The white LEDs are 3v but the blues are 3.6v so they are not as bright as they could be. But like I said the engines are much brighter than what they appear to be in the pictures. The PS I have is an adjustable voltage version. I could bump it to put out 4.5v and wire in resistors to all the LEDs. Right now I am very happy with their light output. That could change though. I bought mine from Anigrand before the C&D. It took about two weeks to arrive.

Welcome back Directorcass. Has been a little while. Great start on what looks to be quite a nice quit. I heard Aningrad were discontinuing all Sci Fi kits so Ron might want to hurry up & make up his mind on getting one. Ive always wanted the RC Destroyer but am hearing alot of negative reports about his kits. Will probably pick one up anyway for the collection. Keep us posted mate & very happy to you have you around.

The RC kits are exactly the reason I was thinking of anigrand.. this whole problem must of started just recently.. the scifi section was up a month or so ago... I'm not paying 3 times the price for 1/3 the quality of an Anigrand kit..

Oh.. there was really no need to rename the thread.. I locked out all threads from public view.. so you have to be logged in to see anything anyway.. this includes all the seach engine BOTS out there etc..

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - directorcass - 03-30-2010

Oh that's cool. It's a nick name I gave to it before the C&D came about. I just like the way it sounds. I ran another 100 feet of FO this weekend on the super structure. Just 600 more feet to go!

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - dbhs - 04-01-2010

I hope the masters get out to someone else someday. I'd like to get this kit eventually. Unbuilt kits are probably going up in price as we speak now. I saw that they were going to limit the production to 100 kits. Anyone know how many actually sold before the C&D?

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - directorcass - 07-09-2010

Just a small update. I recieved my wood stand for my SD. Not sure how I'm going to finish it yet though. Pics added to my Picasa web folder.

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - erospawn - 07-09-2010

I just stained the wood base I got for mine.. I didn't cut it to shape or anything though. I used a walnut stain.Turned out really nice.

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - directorcass - 07-09-2010

I may go ahead and stain mine. However it would be cool if it matched the base to my three little Ani ships with the star field. I'm not sure how good that woud look on such a large base though. I'm not putting anything in the hanger bay so I probably will not add a mirror. Maybe a nice solid gloss black?

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - erospawn - 07-09-2010

Well, I still have the Tiderium shuttle .. the MC-80, the transport ship, blocade runner and medical frigate I have yet to build...So, I may have the blockade runner dropping out from the bay so you can see it in which case a mirror wouldn't be necessary.

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - dbhs - 07-09-2010

I'd go with a dark ebony stain . Make it look like space below it. My 2 c.

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - erospawn - 07-09-2010

I tried that.... but it just looked like black poster board. The wood grain ended up being blocked out.. Using the Dark Walnut stain with 2 coats achieved a similar level without hiding the grain of the wood.

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - JAWS - 07-09-2010

You could thin the ebony stain like a wash. I just don't think a brown color suites these subjects.

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - erospawn - 07-09-2010

The Dark walnut isn't necessarily brown. If you paint two coats of the stuff, it turns out dark, but without hiding the quality of the wood, which is the point of a stain. If you're going to paint it black, then get some black gloss spray paint.

Not to hijack the thread, but here's a pic with the stained base.

That's a nice looking build you have there!

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - 427 Cobra - 07-13-2010

That's beautiful, Ron! That base was a good choice. The wood colour compliments it very well.

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - JAWS - 07-13-2010

It does look good. I was thinking of maybe laying a sheet of styrene & detail it with chips of styrene, some scribing & maybe a few kit pieces? or maybe do a Black base top, leave the sides stained wood, lay down some drak grey Specs, then a lighter grey specs, then some white 7 maybe a cople of randon colors to simulate a star field! That would look pretty kool? The different shades would give it a 3D affect.

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - erospawn - 07-14-2010

Thanks for the compliments guys.. I posted the pic just to show what I meant.. However, please no more comments here as this is Directorcass's thread. I thought about deleting these last few posts.. however, they do fall into the discussion of what to do with the base for Director's ISD.

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - directorcass - 07-14-2010

Just because I started the thread does not mean others can't show off their work. It is quiet O.K. to post your stuff too. It's all good!

For the love of GOD - PLEASE DON'T, Ron! This is great to see your work, and it does tie into what we're discussing as it has relevance! I enjoy seeing it right where it is - no offence to Roberto, but this is always great to see. I love the original ILM days of Star Wars, and these builds always remind me of the glory days now gone.

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - directorcass - 07-15-2010

I just finished a Hero M41-A Pulse Rifle last week. Now that that project is off the bench I can get back to the Star Destroyer!

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - JAWS - 07-15-2010

Maybe you could post your Pulse rifle in the Props section?

RE: Bad Guy Pie Cruiser WIP w/pics - directorcass - 07-15-2010

I'm going to add pics of the PR to my Piccasa web page this weekend. It's based on a TM Thompson airsoft, Matt's resin/aluminum shrouds, G&P Spas cage, full electronics by Replicant FX, etc. I sold it to a member of the RPF.
