A failed attempt at R2-D2? - 427 Cobra - 04-01-2010 Was this R2-D2? Well...it was supposed to be. This was a cigar tube that I smashed the hell out of with a hammer, but it was too soft, and now it won't conform to the correct shape. This broke apart in places, and is unsuitable to use. I didn't know this at the time. I've been trying to figure out some way to make an R2-D2 for Directorcass for the longest time. I've searched high, and low for the correct thickness of aluminum for this project, but still to no avail. I wanted to offer actual aluminum R2 heads for the CC, or Mike Salzo kits so that these can be painted realisticly. I want to make a hollow head with the greeblies cast separately, but with a correctly scribed, and detailed dome. This would entail a separate clear cast radar eye,and refined panel details. Not the bulky version you normally see. This will still be on the side until I can find someone that sells aluminum I can turn myself, or a shop that can stamp these, but that would make the cost jump up if I went into production. I was going to offer this as a one-off, but after a few discussions between the two of us (directorcass), and I - this sounded better all the time. When something arises, I'll post it here first. I'll be talking to some metal suppliers today. Stay tuned for updates - this may not take as long as you think.
