Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 07-17-2010

Hello, I took some really bad photos with a really bad digital cam today. just to try and get something out there to you all just so you know that I am really working on a G. So I hope I can get them on here..lol
hey, ok just to go over a few things..lol. The armature is made from steel tube. All bulkheads and inner structure is made from poplar and one piece of plywood on the bottom of the engine section. all the outer skin is 1/8 and 1/16 styrene. Yes, its a total beast of a model.lol
In the first Pic where you can see the top of the head section, that is a mockup of card board and isnt finished. Just didnt want you all the think that was styrene. And yes the second bullk head is cut and yes it needed to be moved 1/2 forward but, it's going to stay that way..lol and yes the waist maybe at to much of an angle but, it works for me...
I hope you all like it somewhat so far........ later ROn

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Wombat - 07-17-2010

OK,I believe ya,although i don't see ya workin in them snaps! LOL

Looking like a Battlestar to me there Ron,and one that is well on it's way there also mate.If it's out a little here and there i don't think it'll be too obvious when done either, infact there are only a handfull of people that will ever probably know, you being one of em.Thanks for posting it and keep up the great work!!

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 07-17-2010

hello, heres one more. Man!!! I got a messy work bench...lol. Remind me to clean it up next time I snap pics.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - JAWS - 07-17-2010

Wicked Ron. Welcome to the crew mate. She's looking real good. Thats a good start to your posts & we're a real motivational team around here for gettin things done. Be aware we all give a push & are very honest in what we say which is always for the greater cause. Accurate Battlestars. Well as accurate as we can get them. Yours is definately off to a great start 7 look forward to working through the rest of it with you.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Richard_2001 - 07-17-2010

Ron,

Looks great buddy! If the engine section and waist are a little too wide not too many will notice, or care really, as long as you have done your best and are happy with it, that is the most you can ask for!

Richard

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - 427 Cobra - 07-17-2010

At least you're working on what you love to do! These pictures look like the old ILM photos when they were taking shots for posterity. Keep going, show what you have when you can.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 07-17-2010

Thank you all so far for the welcome. I look forward to showing more soon. I just need to get a better cam so, i can get better detail.
Jason, I welcome all of your input's in this project. If you think somethings wrong or totally sucks tell me. As long as its done in a productive way I'm cool. If it wasnt for you and richard help my centurian deck would have been off . and with you're "push" I totally fix that.
I was thinking about this the other day. I started thinking about all this in 2003. Wow!! I think of all the friends I've made. It's been a great (but insane) experiance.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - JAWS - 07-17-2010

No worries. We're not here to put people down, just help them build the best models they can. Is that a scratched Centurion deck or a casting?

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 07-17-2010

no its a actual scale printed centurian deck used for sizing since I dont have the actual parts. I still need them. lol

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - JAWS - 07-17-2010

Yeah well Im going to help you out with a few things eventually aswell as the others.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 07-26-2010

I'm working on the underside of the neck today. Coffin area. wish me luck!! LOL

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - 427 Cobra - 07-26-2010

I wish you the best of luck! I thought about making one of these last year before deciding that a four foot X-wing would be more sensible as far as casting, and building were concerned. I figured that it would be easier to make, and cast since a six foot model covered in model kit parts over 90% of its' body would prove more than I could do in a reasonable amount of time, or afford on any budget by myself! I'm glad that there are people that DO have the time, and wherewithall to do so.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - JAWS - 07-26-2010

Good luck Ron. You'll be right mate.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Wombat - 07-26-2010

Do you want my luck or good luck?

Hey,i'm a little late here, hope things went well for you working on those areas. It's an area i haven't really looked at yet,but the coffin will be a small challenge i'm thinking.

Let's see some pic's!Smile

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 08-10-2010

OK, to give an update. I Started with the throat area. Its very hard for me to actually tell whats going on there. Is it bare pipe ? is it wrapped in plastic? I tried to wrap it in a fashion as CR but, I didnt like it. It didnt look good so I ripped it off. I'm just going to wrap the pipe in plastic. I'll get some pics. later ron

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - JAWS - 08-10-2010

Definately need some pics.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 08-10-2010

I'm having trouble telling how the 8 rad upper hull is cut on the bottom of the throat. Can anyone share some insight?!
its under so much detail I cant tell.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - JAWS - 08-10-2010

Can you copy a ref picture for us from the ref section & edit it in paint? Its really hard to know where your at without a picture.
Edit
heres one for you. Im thinking this is the section your talking about? Wink

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 08-15-2010

JAson, Yep thats the area I'm working on..lol IT's been a very productive couple days I have all that area skinned and all I need to finish is cutting the coffin side and then thats all done. then on to the head. I'll try to get some photos up. Good nite!

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Wombat - 08-15-2010

Thats good to hear, now the proof is in the pudding they say,so get snapping! LOL
Excellent news though mate, glad to hear you've got that area pretty much skinned there.Any progress is good on this build,so keep it up there and keep us all posted when ya can.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 08-19-2010

Hello mates,
Well, here's a few quick snaps of the bottom of the neck/coffin area that I've been working off and on for a week. I hope that it meets your approval. Smile I dont think it looks that bad...I tryed
hey, some of its not as clean as I wanted it to be. In the third pic you can see some really crappy glue joints. Sorry about that.Sad I actually had the wrap done something like the CR tube wrap was but, didnt like it so I ripped it off. And did what you see there. So its not as clean .
This is my first and only studio scale build so, I'm learning alot. What a project to learn on. huh?! LOL
Ron
hey its me again. I figured I'd post some of the side trench on the head I started. I actually started this before I did the bottom/ coffin area. NOw its on to skinning the head. Starting with the bottom.
later Ron

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - JAWS - 08-19-2010

Wow she's lookin good! Don't worry about the tidyness yet. get it all laid out & then clean up the areas your unhappy with. Great progress.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Richard_2001 - 08-19-2010

Ron,

She is looking good all right! You have come Far!!! Don't worry too much about the skin under the neck, most of it is covered by parts under there anyway! I sent you an email about the bottom of the head question.

Richard

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 08-19-2010

Jason and Richard, thanks I appreciate the comments!!!

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - darkimmitator - 08-19-2010

Lookin real good there Ron . keep them posts comming !!!

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - LastBattlestar - 08-21-2010

Nice update Ron. The head trench is very difficult to build from scratch if you're not working from plans. BTW, are you? The floor and ceiling of the trench are very long, tapering arcs. I went nuts doing mine! What is your internal wall height? This will be important as the trench greeblies fit pretty tight in there.

BTW, you nailed the head profile. It looks perfect from that side on view.

Mike

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - JAWS - 08-21-2010

Im pretty sure he's working off Brads plans.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - 427 Cobra - 08-21-2010

That looks just like the early days of ILM! I love the grainyness of the photos, this makes them look even more authentic. This is just like the original, and seeing it from the beginning is great! This makes me feel like a part of history - from afar.

~ Cobra Chris

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 08-22-2010

HEy Guy's,
HEres what went on today. 427 corba I'm glad your liking the pics.
Mike, yes, I'm working from a set of Brads plans but, reworked alot in areas with the help from Richard_2001. Thanks Richard!! We spent alot of time correcting areas to make it look better. I couldnt tell you right off hand the side wall or floor dimension. RIchard? LOL
THe Bottom does Slope to the nose you cant tell it much in the pic but it does. Comments?! Help?!

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Brisfx - 08-22-2010

Hey there

Jason just left after a visit and some more stripping of my Galactica. I gave him a set of my 1:1 plans and he is going to rework some areas. Sorry if they aren't exact fellas, when I had them done it was the best info available. If we get all the corrections done I can get them adjusted and have new sets printed.

regards

Brad

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 08-22-2010

Brad and fellow G builders,
I make myself Clear I in no way was knocking Brad plans when I said I have to rework some areas. Like Brad said when he did them it was from the best info out there. I Still think their Great and They where a major Help. With out them and Brads Help I wouldnt have startd this at all. So Sorry Brad if any way I offended you.
have a great day!! Ron

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Richard_2001 - 08-22-2010

Ron,

No problem buddy!

Looking good so far :-)

Richard

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - JAWS - 08-22-2010

Ron I doubt Brad was offended. Im helping him correct some stuff on his build also. Brad had his plans made like over 10 years ago when there was no reference. Their pretty damn good for that & only need a little tweaking to to be better. I have like 4 different sets of plans now! She's lookin good mate & we're here watching you. Keep up the good work.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Brisfx - 08-22-2010

Hey Ron

Sorry you thought that buddy, takes a LOT to offend me, besides its just a 34 year old model not the National Treasure Smile I just meant i know know with all the new info that they arent exact.

I have molds for some parts if people are interested also a laser cut engine rear plate.

Brad

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 08-23-2010

Hey Brad, I didnt think that you would be. I just want to clear the air before I ended up on some galactica builders bad list...LMAO. I'm always up for Casting. Lord Knows I'll need them. Ron

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 08-28-2010

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 08-30-2010

hi guys, heres whats gone on over the last week.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Cylon-Knight - 09-17-2010

VERY NICE!

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - JAWS - 09-17-2010

Yep thats look sweet mate.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Wombat - 09-17-2010

Oh yeah!!

Good stuff there! This is apparently the hardest area to get right but from that front shot it's got the right look to me.
Nice job,it's really looking the part.Keep up the good work and most importantly, keep us posted! LOL

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - 427 Cobra - 09-17-2010

I love the quality of the photos, as well as the build. It's hard to replicate that old school camera look today with all the new innovations in technology. This truly gives it that ILM/Apogee look with the graniness of the film, even though this all digital. Are you using Charles's plans?

~ Cobra Chris

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - darkimmitator - 09-17-2010

Lookin good Ron !!! That's a real good start on the toughest part of the ship, to build !!!

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Richard_2001 - 09-18-2010

Ron,

Looking great there buddy!!! She is really coming along nicely, I think you are gonna have a nice replica when you get done!

Richard

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - Battlestar1563 - 09-19-2010

Thanks guys for the great comments!! I'm trying my best to make it look right. even though there are some areas that could be better.
Cobra Chris, I'm using Brad Gaffy's Plans. with some redraw's in Area's. When he gets the new set drawn out with the all the new reference they'll be great and in full scale.

RE: Battlestar1563's Galactica. - JAWS - 09-19-2010

We're going to redraw Brads plans with the new measurements we come up with. There not perfect but their good judt like Charles's plans. Unfortunately due to contractual agreemeents with CR I don't think CA is going to redraw his current plans. Correct me if wrong but with 'extrapolation' we will make te plans as accurate as possible. Unfortunately that is at our expense with erors.
