McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 09-06-2010 This one is finished. I'll be photographing it tomorrow with a backdrop and better lighting but here she is with all the parts assembled. I'd like to add a pilot at some point so the canopy is not attached yet. I really appreciate everyone's advice and encouragement along the way. -Doug RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - 427 Cobra - 09-06-2010 Thanks for posting this here, even though you've posted it on other modeling forums. You are truly a modeling genius, Doug! The lighting, detailing, weathering, and even some actual model parts that Apogee would've used are a true tribute to the vision their team, and Ralph McQuarrie had. This is a modeling first for anything Galactica related in the concept field, and I'm proud to see it on our forum. ~ Cobra Chris
RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 09-06-2010 OMFG!!!!! That is the shiznick my man Mr Shortes! RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - Wombat - 09-06-2010 I think it's safe to say it scrubbed up pretty fuckin damn good there!
RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 09-08-2010 Thanks guys. Here's a photo with better lighting. The colors and the weathering show up much better with halogen lights than with fluorescent. And I started working on a composite. It's not done yet but here's the progress I made so far. RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 09-08-2010 Wow that looks really kool Doug. It needs a pilot though for that sort of shot. Beautiful model Doug RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 09-08-2010 Autopilot? I know - just wish I had more time. Never enough time. RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - darkimmitator - 09-08-2010 Doug ,that is an unbelievable masterpiece of scratch built concept art !!! I am truly amazed my friend . Truly amazed !!!!!!!!!! RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 09-09-2010 Thanks, Kenny. This build was a lot of fun. I definitely want to do some more scratch building. Got to do a few kits first though. RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - darkimmitator - 09-09-2010 Can't wait to see what your next subject /project will be . You have just set the bar pretty goddamn high so it ought to be a dandy !!!! RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 09-09-2010 After the shuttle I want to do my Falke Pkf. resin kit from Futchfactor. Its a nice very detailed little kit. I had been putting it off for a few years ecause I couldn't decide on a paint scheme. I have it figured out now, though so I'm looking forward to that now. I also have the SS Movers on order so I can switch to that when I need something big and juicy to work on. I was going to do the Blue Moon B-Wing kit but decided not to so I'm selling the kit. I'd really like to focus on SS and scratch builds from now on. RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - Cylon-Knight - 09-13-2010 Hey all, I did these for dbhs over at ByYourCommand.net - thought I'd share them here too. A GREAT SHIP makes a great wallpaper!!! Here we go - The images are in the resolution of the master raider maker himself! Hope you like. I've added the concept "Galactica" logo, and the sketch that you created the great ship from. Preview images are a link to the full size image! A far out 1970s space background ![]() A more modern space background (more star detail in the full size image!)

A GREAT SHIP makes a great wallpaper!!! C-K, your comps are awesome and I really like them. I did a few more yesterday, posted below, but still haven't finished the first one yet. I spent so much time screwing around with PS i got burnt out on it. Will get it done sometime this week. RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 09-13-2010 wooow that bottom picture gives me vertigo man! Thats sick. Needs a pilot buddy. Get at it! RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - Cylon-Knight - 09-16-2010 I LOVE the top down Raiders in the clouds, I could SO SEE that in a show... looks almost right out of "Razor" like a flashback, etc. Perfect work! RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 09-18-2010 Thanks C-K. I was inspired by the episode in the original where 3 cylons forced a viper to land. (young warriors ?) can't remember. There's a still of that scene but with the viper's nose sticking out under the middle raider. Anyway I didn't have a viper to add, though I guess I could take some pics of the monogram one I did with the digital camoflauge paint job and add that it. Maybe I'll give that a shot as an alternate. RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - JAWS - 09-19-2010 Man that looks so kool but would look so much kooler with a Tin Can in the pilot seat. RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 09-27-2010 Thanks for the comments, guys. I finally got my last composites done and formatted the final pics. RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - Wombat - 09-27-2010 I can't praise this build enough,it's simple one of the best scratched up concepts i've ever seen. You really fuckin nailed this mate! Them composites look great! My favourite two are the rendition of the artwork and the streaking through the clouds. That one in particular really looks the BSG part! Fantastic job there bud!! RE: McQuarrie Concept Raider - dbhs - 09-28-2010 Thanks Phil. I like the cloud one too. It was the easiest to do actually. I did the exhaust trails by setting the cursor to the airbrush tool with a dirty grey and used a book as a guide for the mouse to run down a straight line. I can't figure out how to draw any of the brush tools in a straight line automatically. I'm sure it's possible but the book worked for me. It wasn't perfect and gave a little wavy line that was looks good. I think the exhaust trails should be wider so I might do them again. There's about 4 cloud photos i found on the internet overlaid above and below the ships with varying degrees of transparency and blur. Still took me about 3hours for the whole thing. |
