Jase, I do feel pretty lucky or perhaps fortunate is a better word, to be getting this kit. We all only live once and somethings in life are worth biting the bullet over, don't ya think? I feel that way about this design anyway. For someone like myself it's really taking all the guess work out of it and even more so as Charles has built half of it for me. I didn't think i would ever be anal with building but i've obviously become that way in a short period of time.

Charles, i know we are getting real close with it all but yeah, i am itching to see the outcome first hand of what you've done up there and get cracking here myself with some detailing. I think the body pieces may get here first so i'll probably start building that up in the meantime. I may take some pictures of teh crate openings but, video wil be pretty much out of the question. I don't even know if my old video camera even still works, it must be more than 10 years old as i haven't used since my dog was a pup and he's like ten or there about himself. Trust me, i'll be grinning ear to ear the day they arrive and i'll be hanging to get them home so i can open up finally. Not sure you'll hear me in the northern hemisphere but i think everyone in the southern will be aware i've opened em up. LOL

Well it's time for a small update on this one from me for a change.

Last weekend i spent a bit of time starting construction on the body up. Afterall that head,neck,waist and engine section will need something in between em now. It'll be good if i can have this all together ready for when those section get here from Charles as with those bit's it'll have it at about 85-90%% together with just the landing bays to go and those are already partially built as well being the very first pieces i got with the intention to use on the other build originally. Those bays though put ideas in my head as i mentioned way back and here i am today very fortunate to be able to have one of these CR kit's.

Anyway, lets get on with it then, Lot's of piccy's as i like piccy's! LOL

Mind you some shots aint that great but still it'll give you an idea where i'm at and how i got there.
This design of this kit is simply incredible! I can't express that enough. It really does go together like a 3D jigsaw the way it's been planned out. Everything pretty much interlocks together in some way which in itself to me, makes for stronger joints when bonded. Then not to mention it's just so easy to put together. Every part has a pt# laser cut into it and pointer showing the correct orientation the part should be. It don't get much simpler anyway!

The body is basicly built as two modules. It starts off as a floor piece and you build it up like a house but leave the ends off. The body section has the walls but then an inner set of walls get lamanted inside them also. It's a pretty rigid assembly once all done and then i went and reinforced all the joins with 1/8 sq acrylic rod as Charles had recommended way back for extra strength. At the end the two modules get joined by the front and rear bulkhead as well as a couple of lamanating joint also. Thats after the modules have been placed around the armature that is and the whole body is bolted onto the armature. To make life easier there once again there are jigs for setting the body on the armature. Little things like just this i find very impressive really. There is also a jig for the mount tubes for the bays which impressed me just as much and i'll get to that when i finally get back to the bay side of the build again.

So now onto the coffin, yeah i'm a lil here and there with two things at present. I needed a fix so i'm doing both! LOL
I haven't got very far with this yet as i need to get the body skins on the body so i can then locate the coffin frame ready for skinning. Again it all locates together with tabs and slots. The last picture the body skin and coffin pieces are just sitting in place, i just like to see where i'm headed before i get there and i'm sorta blown away how big the coffin is comparative to the body size. It's frakin huge!!

Just a thanks also to Charles for his assistance and pointers on putting this baby together. I've had a few questions and Charles has been very helpful with his suggestions along with his all round knowledge of both building and the subject in question. Not to mention other stuff as well some of which can be seen in some pictures. Cheers mate!

That's looking fantastic! I want to thank Phil once again for his patience as the build has taken longer on my end than originally planned. While there haven't been any updates from me in a while, the head section is actually done (has been for a while) and is ready to go in the crate. Same goes for the neck section.

I've been slowly finishing the last details on the engine section as I'm juggling other stuff. I'm still waiting on a couple pieces to arrive (my laser-cutter has been having technical issues). Phil was kind enough to allow me to do some extra work such as installing the ventilation fans and designing a custom plug-and-play wire harness and lighting system for the entire ship. That required some extra engineering, time, new hardware to special order, and a few custom parts such as adapter plates for sealing the airstream around the fans.

Fortunately, I have the crates done, thanks to help from Richard2001. All the packing materials are in place and ready to go. This thing will be on its way soon! I'm waiting until everything is ready to go into the crates and then I will take one final round of photos, seal it all up, and get it out of here.

BTW, you may notice Phil that the coffin is crooked and asymmetrical. This was actually on purpose. That is one section that was very wonky on the original. If it were "fixed," all the parts around it would not fit. So, it was designed to match the original and the parts fit very precisely.

Lucky yes? Then we all can be if we can afford and choose to do it. I was just fortunate to have the funds to throw at this one when i did, prior to that i couldn't afford to and today i probably wouldn't be doing it either, so it was just the timing worked out for me. Maybe a rush of blood came into it also! LOL
I wont BS, it's a large chunk of money to throw at a model kit, even a SS Battlestar, least in one hit anyway. But, it's worth every penny for sure once you see how well it's been thought out by Charles. Everything about it so far has pretty much blown me away. I've already mentioned about the scribing being done for the builder as well as things like markings for all the chip's and even island placements. You wait till ya see the body lid, i'm not disapoinent that i don't have ta scribe all that again i can tell ya. There is also another thing i haven't mentioned about the build which you can see in one of the pictures. All the fibre optic holes are already present in the pieces, again taking all the guess work out of things. You can really see just how much work has gone into this design. No BS, That man is bloody insane!! LOL

Charles, no worries, i know you are getting close to completing those sections and i'm gonna be blown away by them without question. Looking at the big picture, the slight delay with it all is nothing, and i've got a bit here now that i can keep myself out mischief with until they arrive. Hell, what a day thats gonna be and like i said, hopefully i'll have things ready this end to be able to do a test fit pretty much as soon as they get here. I betta not go dragging my arse though as i still have plenty to do before i can. I remember it being brought up about the coffin being done that way for just that reason. I probably would have gone a symetrical coffin before and learnt the hard way that a lot of parts would have required lot's of modification's on one side to get them to fit and on the other quite a bit of spacing inreased between em. I didn't know the coffin was out as much as it is, it's quite a lot really and being so i can see that it really is the only way to design that section to get everything to fit how it should.
The extra thing you will be doing for me are gonna be great, the wire harness for the entire build and also those part's we talked about.

For those interested, Charles's wiring system is pretty much the same as everything he does when it's Battlestar related, well thought out and designed to make things less complicated for us builder's. I'll be having this harness built for my build by Charles and i know if any of you other builders would be interested in a set up that can basicly be just dropped in and hooked up ready to go then he'd be happy to do them for other also. Theres also a couple of part's that we have talked about having printed and again, if there is intrest castings will be made available to any of you guy's also. That'll be a lil bit away still so you guy's may not still require them by then, but for myself i'll be holding off detailing that section on this build till i have those part's in hand. To me these are real signiture part's that i want to look correct on my build and i know Charles is gonna do a perfect job of replicating these unknowns for me.

Here's a minor update. I created some special adapter plates for installing the fans. I chose some of the finest computer case fans available. They are very efficient and super quiet. But, as you will see, there is only a tiny mounting surface around the perimeter. This made it impossible to apply weatherstripping to seal around it. Fortunately, I was able to come up with a good workaround.

The solution was to secure each fan to a custom adapter plate via silicone caulking. Then, the assembly is bolted to the front engine bulkhead by way of elastomer anti-vibration mounts. You could argue these aren't absolutely necessary. But, given this is an all-Plexiglass structure and fans do create at least some vibration, I prefer to be better safe than sorry. All my builds are made to last and this is the sort of extra effort I like to go to.

At any rate, the anti-vibration mounts stand proud of the surface of the bulkhead. The resulting gap was filled with weatherstripping to make a draft-proof seal. I finished by hooking up the fan to my 12V benchtop power supply for a test run. It was so quiet I had to listen real close to even hear it! And, it moves a lot of air.

As I was installing all this, I tried to think ahead to what might happen if a fan ever quits working and has to be replaced. Once the front sloping panel goes on, there's no way to access the screw heads on the other side of the bulkhead. I could imagine it being a nightmare to work on later. This is often the case with products you buy that are designed to be easy to put together at the factory even if that means they are impossible to service later on.

Well, I just don't believe in that sort of thing. So, I managed to install jam nuts inside the anti-vibration mounts using thread locking compound. This turned the loose mounting bolts into fixed studs. This way, each fan can be removed and the mounting bolts will stay put. Just twist off the lock nuts, slip the fan off the studs, and replace it.

BTW, I used rubber washers on the back side of the bulkhead so the mounting bolts do not make direct contact. This plus the anti-vibration mounts isolates the fans from the surrounding structure to ensure the smoothest possible operation.

Well while i'm here i'll throw this one at ya's. The body is now skinned which leaves just a few things to do before that side of things is done. Still need to fit the lid levelers for starters and lamanate the two lid pieces together to name a couple. The rear skins are not fitted as i'll await the waist/engine section before adding those. Reason being they need to have an edge beveled to fit the waist and it'll be best to test fit them before glueing with waist bolted onto the body. It's easier to dummy things up and test rather than find i've done something wrong. Remember, stupid is my middle name! LOL The styrene strips between the body and the lid is just to check gaps. It's being used as a substitute for the pieces that will go in there.
Anyway, it's getting there. At the moment it's sitting with putty on the skin joins. Which for the most part will hopefully show very little once sanded back. Hopefully being the key word!

Yeah all scribed, Ken. I really do like the fact that everything as far as i know comes pre scribed in this kit. On one hand it's probably more self satisfying building the way you are (doing everything for yourself) but for me i just want my SS Battlestar and that really is the only goal i'm chasing so this kit is just perfect for me. Not only is the lid scribed but again the holes are all in place to run the fibres through it. It's one bloody nice design for sure!

Doug, the whole lid will be removable to a point. Because there will be fibre optics running through it will mean it's always infact tethered to the rest of the body. The fibre optics wil be the last thing going in it though so during the build it will be completely removable.

Another small update showing a lil more progress with this sucker then.

So the putty on the body is all rubbed back and it's turned out not to bad on the edges, very little infact was required once sanded back. I still layed it on as i like to try and nail it on the first go and not have ta keep re applying putty. Of course thats what we all like and we all know that don't happen as much as we'd like. Anyway, this scrubbed up not to shabby.

With that done it was back to the dead mans section to see what things i could try and ruin there. For the most part after glueing it all on it looks ok. It should scrub up with some putty and sandings afterwards. We'll see there i guess...
Anyway i built this up doing all the side walls first and the top pieces last. Reason being i wanted to reinforce all the joins as much as i could and the only way to achieve this was to build it the way i did. I have to thank Charles for giving me that bug, it sure does make all the joins nice and rigid. Hopefully no popping panels over time anyway.

Doug, it's built up using anodized aluminum tubing. It's still has some weight about it though as this material has a pretty thick wall at around 3.5mm.

The actual size of the coffin blows me away a just a bit now that it's on there. It's pretty large once together, larger than i was expecting anyway. Or perhaps it's just the body looks small in comparison to it's size. Seeing everything laying bare also highlights how offset things are. OK, some of that is probably from the builder but then it's all still about right. LOL
Makes me wonder just how such a piece was built so asymmetrically on the original being the shape and size it is?

When I was designing this I found a pic of the original under construction that showed just how off center it was in the rear. I submitted it to CR and said if we didn't match this, none of the parts surrounding it were going to fit. It's pretty shocking, isn't it? Still, now that you know what to look for, you should be able to spot the asymmetry pretty easily when you look at pics of the original.

And, yes, having it covered in greeblies really does help disguise things a bit. Also, since it's on the bottom of the ship, I'm sure they figured no one was ever going to get a good enough look at it to notice. . .

I spent time this week dealing with the lid, front air vent, and rear thruster openings. For the lid, I had to get all the tie-downs in place and everything precisely aligned. Because I made the upper side boxes removable to aid in detailing, much of the top can only be assembled after those are permanently glued in place. But, I want as much done as possible prior to delivery to make it easy on the client. So, I carefully fitted and pre-installed whatever I could, all the while making sure the whole thing could come back apart once it gets to its destination.

The same thing goes for the rear thruster openings. Those come apart to make it easier to detail the insides. Yet, everything must be fitted and assembled prior to delivery. After that, it all has to come apart again. As a result, many of the parts are only taped in place for now, or screwed down in such a way that they can be disassembled later.

One interesting experience was making the Plascore honeycomb engine vents. I have never worked with this material before. It's made from paper-thin aluminum and its about as hard to find as KoolShade. So, I could not afford to make any mistakes.

The center opening on this design has a "tunnel" with a red Plexiglas insert. This means the Plascore must be carefully trimmed to fit inside the tunnel. It took some practice, but I was able to cut it cleanly using sprue cutters.

I also built the KoolShade vent in the front. That was pretty tricky. It turns out they used two layers on the original to try and keep you from being able to see through the material. The top layer runs at a right angle to the bottom layer. I made the bottom piece oversize and glued it around the edges underneath with CA. But, the top piece just sits in the opening and nothing attached it on the original. In fact, they used the kit parts to hold it down!

This stuff is like a fabric so it doesn't want to lay flat. I came up with a unique solution. I took a short piece of stranded aluminum electrical hookup wire and removed the insulation. Then, I separated some of the strands. (Each one was not much thicker than a human hair.) I used these to "stitch" the KoolShade panel in place. By touching the strands with a black Sharpie marker, they completely disappear against the KoolShade. This worked so well, I plan to use this method in the future whenever I need to work with this material again.

I finished by installing a baffle under the vent made from scrap black acrylic. With this in place, you can't see anything at all inside the vent and yet air can still flow. It should work very well.

At any rate, here are the latest pics. I really wish I could take better pictures. This thing looks so much better in person than it does in these snapshots.

Well after Charles's fantastic pictures of the engine section what i'm about to post is all rather minor. Still it's all part of the process of making a SS Battlestar so heres what i've gotten up to since my last posting on my progress.

The coffin is all sanded back, it turned out ok but still looks strange being how it is. I'm sure as both Charles and Mike have commented, it'll be less noticeable once theres part's covering it. So that side of things is done now and awaiting the start of some greeblie action at some stage down the track.

Next up and this is my latest bit of playing is the pyramid. Again it all just goes together very easily. Just some edges to bevel and thats about it before assembly could be done. I went ahead again and reinforced the joins on this area to hopefully hold things together well for at least the rest of my lifetime anyway. As you can see it's once again built as two pieces and then will be joined for good once on the body. It needs some putty and thats what i'll be doing next before gluing it onto the body. of course prior to that i wanted to see how it looked. LOL

One more thing i got completed was the lid levelers installed on the body. This requires tapping a thread into the body where each leveler is positioned. The holes were already present so it was pretty easy, even for me. LOL
It's one of those things i would normally just use styrene strip to shim something if needed, in this case the body lid. But that ain't the way our Charles goes about things when he designs something. The build incorporates these nylon thread insert that can be wound in or out to adjust the lid height and levelness. He really doesn't do things by halves as i think we are all aware of by now and this is just another example of it.

Then just for something different i decided to see what this thing looks like with a couple of bays hanging off the side. Well ,incomplete bays but it sure widens that bugger up. I've got plenty to do on them still but i'll work on getting things lined up properly relative to the body pretty soon. Once that is sorted plenty more can happen in that area also.

Julien, the pipe used on this has a 1.90 OD. Not sure what the reasoning is there but it's an interesting one as it's under size to what was used on the original. Perhaps Charles will drop a note on why this design uses the size pipe it does. It may have to do because things are bolted together rather than welded on this design. Which may need to be smaller pipe to allow for plates and bolt heads etc to fit into the room thats available. It's interesting though as some of the pipe is viewable on the completed model, well it's the pipe with greeblies attached. But still the pipe is the base and will require some skinning of the armature with styrene to bring it up to the right diameter of what was used on the original. Nothing too hard hopefully.

Not yet. Once again, I must thank Phil for his patience. I was down with a nasty bout of flu for nearly two weeks. That really threw a wrench into the works. The worst part was I had the head and neck sections ready to go. The engine section had just gotten a coat of putty in a few places and was ready for final clean-up.

I'm still getting my strength back and trying to get up to speed. It's Thanksgiving this week here in the US and that is a big holiday that takes a lot of time and energy. I have the head and neck sections boxed up and ready to tape shut. I still have to do some finish sanding on the engine section though and get it in its box. But, after a very long delay it will be out the door shortly. . .

PS Thanks to Richard2001 for building the wood crate frame for me.

Only one thing is gonna top seeing what i'm seeing above and that will be happening in just a couple of weeks now. Thats gonna be one of those days where i won't be able to get home soon enough for sure.

Thank you to Charles for doing such an outstanding job with these sections. You went far beyond what i was expecting i would be getting and couldn't be happier with what you've cranked out for me. Bloody fine job with it all mate!

The crates that Richard built to send the pieces on there long journey look more than adequate to do the job required. Nice bit of work, Richard! They look like they are going to be very well protected with what you and Charles have come up with there which again is like everything else, just incredible!

This isn't a cache problem. Happens to me to when the last post on the previous page is mine...and I see that the last post on the previous post is Phil's. I have to post again and then everything else is revealed.

Really, this is weired. I didn't post anything but after Charles had posted the engine section post everything was showing that i hadn't been able to read. I don't know but there had been a few postings by people that i couldn't see.

Will try the browser thing if it happens again and if that don't work i'll try what Doug mentioned. Seems like there maybe rats in the corn?
