Scratchbuilt AT-ST 1/72 scale

Here's a project that I'm working on, three scratchbuilt AT-STs. The heads are all made of styrene and some greeblies for the guns. The engines and legs and feet will be casted parts, with styrene and greeblie detailing. They will be displayed in a diorama of Endor.






I had one foot scratched and ready to cast, but it didn't look right, so I made another. I started with the basic shape for the "Sole" of the foot, and I added plastic ribs to hold putty and use as a guide when i sand it down to shape.




Here's the heads painted....







here's a shot of all the casted parts for the drive motors and legs


Finally, here are the first of the trees. I used wooden dowel and sculpted some A+B Epoxy Putty around the dowel and added the "Bark Texture" with a small chip of styrene.



I'll have a few more trees at various sizes to build. Currently, I'm patchworking some Stormtroopers.

By the way, Thanks Modelnutz for posting those tips on "Casting" the talcum powder really made my casted pieces shine!

Sorry to say that the Star Destroyer isn't completed, just juggling two projects.

Very cool. I thought these were studio scale until I saw the other things in the background for scale. You guys know that you can use tile grout for rocks,tree bark,bricks,or anything that has a rough texture that resembles anything found in nature. You can make realisitic castle walls with it too! It's maleable (soft),and it's waterbased. Just don't get any on your hands - it drys the oil in them out. Wear nitrile gloves when using it. Latex tears too easy,and if you're allergic - you definately don't want to wear latex anyway,especially since it doesn't breathe the way nitrile does. Any way,my uncle made a castle with it years ago,but it was given to my cousin to play with,and he destroyed it.

Here's the latest rebuild of the AT-ST foot. I filled in the plastic frame with putty, and sanded it to shape. I added the hinge as well.

I still have some areas that need to be detailed. Once that is done, I'll make a mold and cast these for the AT-ST's.

Ha I thought Canadian! Then I thought maybe not... Excellent stuff scratchy. this is going to be a fantastic piece. The detail on these lil ATST's is just smashing. I always loved that picture from ROTJ with the ATAT docked to the Radar Landing Pad...Where he meets his Father, again.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I finished detailing the foot, that's ready to be made into a mold. I'm just retooling the bottom of the drive engine, I got my hands on some better reference images and I noticed some needed corrections.

Hmmm,.... maybe another build. I wasn't planning on having chewie incorporated into the diorama, however I was thinking of him swinging from a vine with two Ewoks clutching onto him.

Speaking of Dio's- I think you could stage a very nice scene and still keep it within one of those "tall glass display domes" that sit upon a wooden base?

How cool would that be!

I've made the mold for the foot and i retooled the the drive engine and remade the mold for that. I poured some parts over the holidays, now I'm just sanding and piecing the AT-STs together.

I have this one glued to the pose that I think would look very true to the motions of an AT-ST. The head isn't glued down yet, just fixed in place with some "post-it" putty. I still have to sand it and add the additional parts like the springs, guards, small details, etc.

I really like this pose, it's actually standing on its own without the aide of any post-it putty under the feet. The heads are made out of styrene and are lighter than the legs and drive engine, so it's nice that it isn't "top heavy".

I placed two 1/72 Stormtroopers near it to demonstrate scale.....

That looks great as i've said it before,but it really is top work that you are doing there with this project.
I like that pose,it's sorta does look like it'd be correct looking how you've done it.
The little figures are great also,this really will be an awesome display when all done.
It's gtting there and more importantly it's looking damn good.

I'll have to try this technique on one of the builds, I wonder if white grout would discolour over time?

Well, I've finished glueing the final cast pieces for the second and third AT-STs.

- The first walker I have it posed in a defensive position and rearing back.

- The second has a slight crouch to it, I'll have this one behind and slightly below a tree branch.

- The third has more of an upright standing position.

It shouldn't. I've had the same grout in my mothers' shower for three years now,and it still hasn't changed colour. After seeing these tiny wonders of artistic beauty,I think I love you! What you really need is an Ewok being trampled under the foot of one of these. I think you should make these into a kit -hint,hint! Scratch building is a whole new level of artisitic expression,but tiny things like this are a true test of a modelers' skills!

Actually, I haven't done any work on either builds. Lately, I've been casting parts and details for the Revell AT-AT when I have any available time. The AT-STs' and the AT-AT will end up in the same diorama. I haven't done anything for the AT-AT, probally won't for some time as far as construction goes. I'm looking at building an entire new cockpit/head for it. I've seen too many major and subtle issues with it to correct it with some styrene, may as well just build a new one.

The model building is on hold for now until I get a graphic design project out of the way for a client.

Hey Scratchy theyre all cast parts. Why don't you kit them?????

Everything except for the "Head" is cast. A person will need some scratchbuilding skills to finish them off. There are some details that weren't added to the cast parts, which will be needed, like plate armour, hoses, toes, etc.

They'll go good next to a 1/72 AT-AT. The legs are a bit long, and will be perfect for the ESB AT-ST. However some modifications will be needed for the RotJ version.

One person contacted me and purchased a set, they knew of the challenge ahead of them and went for it. The parts are a good base to build on.
