Here is a Deathstar surface detail that I did for producer Gary Kurtz and director Patrick Read Johnson in 2006. It was a rush job that had to be done in a week. You can read all about it here... http://rickingalsbestudio.com/pages/post.htm
The model was sent to John Knoll who comped it in the 'making of Star Wars' scene of '77. In the final scene, he had the camera POV skim the surface, then dip into the trench.

As a bonus, here used in the same scene is the CG Millennium Falcon originally built by ILM for the Star Wars Special Edition...
