This is a unique feature that allows the head and engine sections (as well as the landing bays) to be removed from the rest of the structure for shipping and detailing. The armature pipe is just under 2 inches in diameter while the "sleeve" built into each section has an ID of exactly 2 inches. It's sized for a slip fit. To make everything snug and get it properly aligned, shims are needed on the armature.
Because this armature is slightly smaller in diameter than what was used on the original, it must also be wrapped in styrene where exposed in order for everything to look just right.
