I forgot to mention the leg tanks... 
The closest match in kits are parts from the Convair Manned Observation Satellite (Strombecker / Glencoe) and it was a 1958 release. The earliest re-issue for it that I can find is the Glencoe version, circa mid-1990's. This makes it problematic for something that had to be built in late 1979...
While I have no intention of quitting the search for the correct kit parts, I did discover that the front spinner sections for the engines to Anakin's Pod-Racer are perfect sized leg tanks when fitted end-to-end.
