Hey,Don - why don't you cut that armature in half,and keep the interior. The ball itself along with the structural integrity of the TIE fighter design should keep this from sagging! This way,you can have the best of both worlds. I take it that this doesn't come with an interior? If you want one - Lasse Henning might hook you up with one.
