Those are the bad old days when glue came from a jar with a brush in it! I remember for the longest time that was all you could get. Then glue started to come in tubes. My brother, and I marveled at the Tamiya kits of the day, as these came with tiny tubes of glue in the box along with the kit. Now days, everyone uses CA (superglue) adhesive, or something similar because it dries so fast, but you can't remove it from a kit without ruining it!
