I am looking at the fiber optic install for my Battlestar and figuring out what size hole to drill for 1mm fiber. It has to do with the small square plastic “chips” that surrounds every fiber. I am thinking they drilled a slightly larger hole in the model, then drilled a 1mm hole in the small plastic chip. This gives a bit more space for the glue to go. But I’ve never seen/heard anyone talk about the small chips around the fiber. Does anyone know why they are there? Is it as I am guessing or some other reason? I never particularly liked how they looked. Was considering drilling 1mm holes in the model and then lensing the fiber end and gluing directly to the model without the chips.

Well, took a little bit longer to come back over here.
But due to rebuild our house, kept moving to other location and well...life itself... it has took the time needs.

So, more happy to show some new stuff.
The kit i use for this build is a sify studio scale modelers kit.
Normlay it's a stady kit, which is nice by it's own.
But i decided to go the extra mile and build it as stop motion model.
For this i bought two of the kits to get all the parts twice.

First post, but pic heavy, as it's now "ready for airbrushing"

Have fun to watch, ask if you should have some question.

Hi all, I wanted to post my first self-developed garage kit. It captures the Bunker generators see in ROTJ.

Much respect to 3D printing, but everything here is scratch-built, no printed items.

All of this is from the same found and kit parts used on the originals. The only difference is the large cup section; those cup molds no longer exist, so I used the newer generation cups that only had minor mold changes. Otherwise, everything is exactly like it was on the original. I also did everything I could to make this easy to assemble with built in dimples showing where to drill and pin, and very little mold lines.

The majority of the kit is holo-cast in resin, and includes the wood board, acrylic, and Plastruct rails for the base.

The model in the pictures here are reject parts I collected during the casting process. I am waiting on some paint to arrive this week and should be finished sometime next week, hopefully.

Please, feel free to check out my Facebook page to see more photos and follow if you can.

I've been meaning to show some work on this for some time now, but have been holding off until I had some meaningful "physical" progress.
I also wanted to get some momentum before posting, as amongst my friends I am notorious for unfinished projects. I'm trying really hard not to let this be one of those, as the sheer immense scale of this project lends itself to one.

However, I figure some will find interesting my preliminary work, research and initial findings as I prepare for my build. It may also give some scale to the project as I start to make things.

I started tinkering with the idea of modelling the falcon from sheet styrene many years ago whilst we had the 'Science Meets Imagination' travelling exhibition here in Sydney Australia. I was able to take a bunch of mostly blury, dark and poor quality photos of the model as it was displayed.

Above, photo from the Science Meets Imagination exhibit in Sydney.

At the time I was doing quite a bit of CAD modelling in my work and at home with hobbies, and began drafting the model referencing photos, and drawings that had been published on the old Yahoo 'Millennium Falcon Builders Group', and my ERTL/MPC model kit. The model kit and drawings proving not to be the most reliable references, however there wasn't much else to rely upon back then.

Above, my early preliminary CAD model of the falcon.

Eventually I stumbled upon Gort's amazing ID thread on the RPF which revealed many of the original kits used on this model. I was amazed at the collective knowledge and resources that came together to map much of the outer surface. I am now indebted to all the contributors over the years.

I also found a few other pivotal threads that fired my enthusiasm for this project.

Stuart Brown's 5' Falcon ANH Build thread on the RPF was a major influence. It was pure inspiration to see that someone was brave enough to actually tackle a 5' model. And the attention to detail. I love the traditional approach that Stu took to to develop his build section by section using kit parts to guide his way. Ultimately to be later refined by the research of a dedicated group of builders.

Not long after I found photos of Lee Malone's impressive and completed Empire Strike Back 5' build. Equally impressive was the collection of kits that that he had acquired to see it through. As seen on display in the background of some of his pics.

Andre Bustanoby's RPF build thread was a major milestone in falconeering. His dedication to accuracy employing a range of new digital tools were fascinating. And through his collaboration with Joshua Maruska, realised the first really accurate CAD model, and subsequent drawings of this subject and others.
This was a massive leg up to all that aspired to model this ship to scale.

Following this, and strangely what sealed the deal was finding Joshua Maruska's 3D printing thread on the RPF. Joshua was possibly one of the first to propose modelling the donor kit parts in CAD for the purpose of 3D printing. However in 2015 this was an emerging technology, and at time not really viewed as a viable tool in the Studio Scale fraternity due to its infancy.
He suggested the creation of a digital archive of rare vintage kit pieces, through collaboration with like-minded individuals.

This ultimately appealed to me as I enjoyed working in CAD. And I could kind of see where the technology was heading.
Joshua's blog site is also a fantastic resource for info and inspiration.

I also eventually discovered Sean Sides epic build thread on the RPF which was another goldmine of reference material. Not only were his photos invaluable, but so were the snippets of info addressing various aspects of his build. Truly inspirational much in the same way as Stu's build thread.

There are a bunch of other folk that have been extremely helpful over the years, contributing photos, ID's and other info along the way that need thanking.

This site and its members have also proven to be an invaluable reference for information. Hence why I wanted to share my progress here first. Thank you!

And one other builder in particular who has been encouraging me along the way.

More to follow...

Along with Guy Cowen, we have both put a lot of hours into this, so she is extremely accurate to the filming miniature.
Hoping to complete these patterns this summer so she is ready for molding.

Lighting Studio Scale Models (in particular the Galactica)

All,
Looking for some help on how to go about designing the innerds of a studio scale model. In my case, it is the Galactica, but would like to learn how to do this for any model. I have very limited experience in electronics. I understand the basics of ohms law and could do simple stuff like cramming a few LEDs in a model, but something as big as the G is a whole different story. Once I have identified what, for example:

1. the Custom Replicas Landing bay running light circuit boards
2. some type of super bright LED lamps for the engines
3. lighting source (probably two) for the fiber optic port lights; one for the head and one for the main body
4. internal lighting for the landing bays (I am building out a partial interior, plus back lighting the matte painting)

Then how do you determine how to make all that work together? How do you determine what specs for the power supply? How do you determine any special stuff like remote control to power on and off, dimmer switch for engines, etc. Any other special effects you might think up. How does one plan all that out. Seems like a whole different skill set. I feel like I must be missing something obvious as I have yet to see anyone post about the inside stuff when so many are building lighted models.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Any books, youtube videos, or other sources of info would be great. Just don't know where to start. Don't want to mess this up and end up burning up 20 years worth of work.

Thanks in advance,

I had already began an exacting replica of the X Wing using all the correct source kits. After preparing a Maxi Brute fuselage to Hero configuration, I stopped. Then, there was a brief opportunity to get in on a run for a copy of a real Pyro X Wing. It completely changed my approach to my own project.

TEN YEARS LATER

I just want one nice finished X Wing at home. The Pyro has the pedigree and the work feels important.

Despite the careful reconstruction of this blowed up bird, it was still missing some things. Some of the chips were changed or removed. A few panel lines drifted mid repair or were completely covered. The engines were broken and reassembled before duplicating and two of the engine cans are by all evidence late additions. Two of the cannons are modified originals, maybe in an effort to make left and right pairs. Two matching wings also appear to have been reassembled slightly crooked.

Time to put it all back the way it was originally. We’ll go through it piece by piece in excruciating detail.

Word is from Bill George, this smaller model was built purely for the hyperspace jump VFX shot on leaving the Home One carrier.
The lower hull is ABS tubing and styrene sheet. The upper hull section I created my own vac form buck and pulled it in 1mm styrene.

Hi All,

Rather new here still, this is essentially my first posting beyond my initial introduction. I caught the studio-scale bug after visiting Sean Sides and seeing his 5-foot Millennium Falcon build in progress.

I've been busy behind the scenes building up my studio-scale escape pod from Jason Eaton's really nice kit. Apologies for not starting a WIP thread from the very beginning, but I just kinda started in on it one day and got fairly far along before I thought to start grabbing images as I went. I'll make a few posts here for starters with several images each so as not to overload any one post with too many images...
