Space Academy Planetoid build in 1/2 studio scale, the build files!

I actually saw many of the Saturday morning TV episodes when they aired, in the Fall season of 1977. Using most of the existing models and adding the sleek StarfireJason of Star Command followed along in 1978 and '79, and the shows were in re-runs for a long time on Saturday morning TV, well into the 1980's. From a sci-fi modeler perspective, the spacecraft modeling was outstanding, given the low budget and time constraints. Given that Filmation's Lou Scheimer statement from his book and video interviews, he needed some model makers, and walked into the MCA-57 shop just after they were done with all the Star Wars work, but, before they were doing anything else, and this was *before* the theatrical release of George Lucas little space film. He was able to hire Jonathan Erland, Lorne Peterson, and Paul Huston - possibly others.

The actual filming effects miniature was 4 feet long (48 inches or 1.336m). I sseriously admire the builders here who knock out 4-foot and 6-foot and larger studio scale builds; I just don't have the size of home where I can do that! So, the asteroid miniature that I am building here is 22 inches long, giving me a scale of 1/11093. That means scratch building virtually the whole thing; very few off-the-shelf items are compatible without modifications. This meant using lots of ‘found’ parts to be kit-bashed and tweaked into shape.

Some quickie math, since I am simply a happier modeler when I have an inkling of the scale I am working with. Based on screen captures of the televised program from DVD's and the hard work of the gentlemen E. James Small and Patrick King Hill, the width of a Seeker was determined to be 18 feet. The Seekers are the small utility spacecraft that the actors used to come and go from the Star Command planetoid. Using that to determine the maximum width of the hanger bay, I get a width of 126 feet. Using the best available side view of the Academy asteroid showing the length of the Academy and the hangers, I arrive at an approximate overall length of 20,800 feet. My build is 22.5 inches long, giving me a scale of 1/11093. Roughly, that is.

Have determined the length and size of my build, I get started by getting a new sheet XPS foam (Extruded Polystyrene foam). Its very light weight, easy to form and sculpt, and can be attached in layers with a variety of adhesives. The surface can be textured with sanding, and with a number of sculpting tools. I am a fan of working with foam; and while foam has it's own unique challenges, it is inexpensive and easy to work. I had determined the overall size and shape of the asteroid, and using a band saw, quickly cut out a top and bottom blank. I used a ceramic kitchen knife for rough shaping as it does not bind up in the foam the way most other metal blades will - thanks to Robb Merrill for that tip!

I have been a fan of the USS Cygnus from Disney's The Black Hole since it was released back in 1979. Showing how old I am now!

The MPC kit that was released left a lot to be desired and it wasn't until the advent of 3D printing that technology could do justice to the design. Thankfully, someone far more capable than me created a stunning 3D model and offered the parts, via Shapeways, to build the Cygnus at 1/700 scale. This roughly translates to a 5ft replica when complete.

My son and I are going to be building the Cygnus and I hope to chronicle the journey here. We decided we wanted to try lighting the model as it's really meant to be displayed fully lit.

First up is putting the laser-cut acrylic armature together. The various parts were sent to Pololu to be cut and I can highly recommend their work. We are using epoxy adhesive to make sure the armature is as strong as possible.

My Favorite Starship of all time is the Original series Enterprise. My model is the original Release so I had to fill in and sand smooth those terribly out of scale and incorrect grid lines.

It's painted and weathered to match the flinging miniature as close as I can in this scale, using reference material I obtained over the years.
The biggest challenge was to get the Engine lights/effect as close to the effect seen on the original Miniature during the filming of the original season. I basically rebuilt the Polar Lights Lighting kit to achieve the desired result...It was a very long and difficult process till I was happy.

With the Photos, I have attached links of the model, to view the Lighting effect!

Thanks!

Here is my Bandai Perfect Grade Millennium Falcon build. I have loved this ship and this version(three landing legs) since I saw Star Wars back in that magically summer of 1977!
As this is a Bandai Kit, the fit and assembly of the kit are second to none...In my experience it's simply the best mass produced Model of a model ever made.

The real fun is the painting. I painstakingly strived to match the 5' Filming miniature as she appeared in the first break through film. I have attached photos comparing my model with the original.
I elected to disregard the kit supplied Cockpit interior and use parts from shape ways plus scratch building to match the five footer.
I had a lot of fun with this and I hope my passion for the ship comes through in these Photos!

High Regards,
Mark

Hey guys, it's been a while since I posted anything here so her are a couple of shots of the 1/25 scale Raptor I have been working on. I used electroluminescent wafer to light up the video panels. Since the parts where cast in transparent resin I was able to just sandwich the EL wafer behind it and light block the parts I didn't want to light. There are standard LED's in the engines. To run the EL stuff you do need to have an inverter to run AC voltage so that will be placed in the base. This is a pretty old kit but it's cast well with very little bubbles or voids.

My 1/8 Scale BTTF Delorean (WIP)

Since July, I've started on a less intensive project, and it's a little more fun to build because all of the parts are pre painted. Everything is held together with various sized screws. This is my BTTF DeLorean by Eaglemoss. It is my first subscription build, and so far I'm loving it! Here is the latest update:

The weather and work have been nearly impossible this whole last month. A quick update for my website, though: For those visitors who check for updates on their cell phones and tablets, I was able to get the issue of viewing the pictures on my website resolved. I have received several complaints about visitors not being able to view the pictures on my site. It seems there was a software issue that has now been updated, so you should be able to visit my site without any further issues. I've tried it on my own phone and now I don't have any problems seeing any of the pics. Thanks to all for letting me know about this issue! Hopefully everything is fixed.

My only update for Nov/Dec is for the DeLorean Build. I have over 50 new pics on the 1/8 BTTF DeLorean page. Check out Slides 57 - 110 on the 1/8 BTTF DeLorean page. The assembly goes very fast with each of the Issues received. It takes about 5 to 10 minutes per issue so I can do a few things every few days if I need to. This is a really enjoyable build. Currently I'm working on the building of the Engine. The details are just phenomenal. Please check out the pics. Drop a few comments if you can.
As many of you know, those who have followed my builds over the years, December is a very low model building month for me so I will probably not be able to get much of anything done until early next year. The drydock has been on hold now for a while jus because of my job. But hopefully things will taper down by the 1st week of January and I can get back into the swing of things. Please be safe during this time of the year and I will see you in 2019.
Thanks everyone!

Doing a bit of Archive-X paint testing on a little Bandai.
Been wanting to throw paint at the MOM Y for a while.

So far I've shot Reefer White, Yellow, then used Mud on the engine bands.

Before ILM shot the Mud, they have latexed up these bands, then applied Mud.
After this, they have heavily misted the bands with a grey.

I chose SP Light Lark for this purpose, but it could be reefer, it seems to change in various reference.

Only then is the latex removed. It' possible there is another latex layer over the Mud before the grey, bit at this scale im not getting too pedantic.

Anyway, just a bit of fun, be great to do this in studio scale, may have to pick a kit up someday.

Hi guys, It's been a while since I posted anything here. So, here is my latest (completed) project. This is the Masterpiece Models 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Nautilus. It measures 31 inches and is finished in metallic antique copper paint and then burnished, with a black wash and a little pastel work to give it a natural patina. I didn't want it to look like a rust bucket but rather have a more steam-punk look. Hope you like it.

Been tinkering with this one for a bit. Its based on the Launchbay model, but in 1/24 "studio scale" rather than the reputed 1/18th of the disney printed models.
Using 2mm styrene, and its still very early days, but things are starting to take form now. The rear butt shroud is shown here in rough form, and still needs shimming before the hull is joined and fully blended in.
Wings will be static open, like a Salzo, and once drawn, laser cut in acrylic. Luckily i did get some good dims from the concept maquette, that have really helped scale the whole thing in 1/24th.
Once i finish the inner lower structures, i can join it all up from here, carry out the aforementioned blending and shaping, and complete the scribing, nose, cockpit tub, wings......im tired already haha!

Hi Guys,

It's been a while since I have posted anything here so here are a few shots of my Randy Cooper Star Destroyer (Yep,another one). I went ahead and made a wood frame for mine and now in the middle of installing the fiber optics. I had some warping problems at first but managed to straighten things out. I'm not making a mounting system for this one but rather will make a standard display stand with a mirrored base.

I made at the beginning of each episode of the original trilogy
I myself symbolizes the power of the Empire
My shape is simple but graphically awfully effective on screen

I am ... the StarDestroyer

Although I had some 2 or 3 things left to correct on my Salzo Galactica, last december I started the Star Destroyer from Randy Cooper.
This is my favorite ship in the SW saga (the falcon coming in second).
So when Randy Cooper announced that long 90cm kit in early 2008, I quickly positioned and I was among the first buyers.
Ther were some parts missing that Randy sent me quickly.

And so he waited since back then.

This is a rather well detailed kit. I will see if it is well designed during assembly, but I have no doubt it will book me a few surprises!

There are some molding defects : bubbles, gaps, flash, resin drops (!)
It seems thare are also some large area to sand, so a fixed belt sander or a lapidary is strongly advised here.

The internal frame is made of 3 resin parts that I don't feel there are not enough, so I am thinking to replace them with wood and aluminum channels.
The display arms are in two parts which I will replace by a single one (a table leg like on my Salzo Galactica)

It is larger than the Anigrand kit of only 20cm (72cm vs 90cm for the RC), that makes it twice bigger in volume.
despite the size, the RC is, to my point of view, more faithfull in shape and detail to the original ESB model, where the Anigrand is a mix between the ANH and ESB stardestroyer studio models.

On the other side, the Anigrand kit is an easier kit to assemble, and of a better molding (some are close to injected !)

I recently bought a screen used Universal Solider headset. One of the parts on the headset appears to be a model part, but I have not been able to ID it. Looking for some help from you! It appears the model part has had some pieces added to it... primarily the block at the bottom, but possible the cone shape as well. It has been cast in metal (it is a counterweight for the heavy eyepiece on the other side of the headset).
