I wondered why you included that with the kit

Yeah most people miss those.
There are also a couple of bits that go in the intakes.
The little tank tread & another bit I just realised I have not added.

Also the guns have tube in support so can be hollow if cut right.

I got the clear pilot, but not the cockpit. That's ok. I decided to not use either one.

Any suggestions for the base color? I read Sazlo used Krylon pewter grey.

I used the Kyrlon fusion Pewter Gray myself. Look for 'TOS Viper' in the built section.
I also did some comparisons to 'deck tan' which was also pretty good, but as the name of the paint suggests, I felt it was just a hint less gray than I liked.
