Hey guys just wanted to share some in progress pics of my scratch built Snowspeeder. I am working on painting it up, the hulls' topside is almost done, just needs a few more finishing touches. Would like to hear your opinions on it?
Thanks
That's badass! I like the paint up for sure, the peppered stipple look in the chipping down the body looks really good and convincing to the scale!
Is the rear and bottom modeled out, would love to see. I want to scratch one of these as well, I'm leaning towards taking my 1/72 Bandai model and creating the larger SS patterns from that. Did you ref that model when creating your patterns, just curious.

Thanks Lee, means alot coming from you. How have you been? I emailed you but I don't know if the email address I have of yours is current. What have you been working on?
Helio
I've just started building again after a good hiatus buddy.
I'm working on all sorts at my own pace really, keeping it fun, with a great bunch of guys.
Good to see you back at it though, and if you like feel free to add me on Facebook dude, really good to hear from you.
Hey Kris, thanks for the nice words. The bottom is finished as far as modelling goes, I am just getting going on the weathering. I don't have the Bandai kit. While I know the Bandai's accuracy are good for a commercial kit, I can tell you it isn't very accurate when compared to the Studio model. I drew up my own plans based on a lot of reference. I hope you do start a build and have fun with it, it is a great subject.
Hi Telepathic
Grat model. You makes me a lot of envie. I try to do it some time ago, but I failed wiht the blueprints.
Could you tell us how do you get the dimensions?
Thanks a lot and congratulations
Luis
Hi! I apologize for my bad English.
I´ll improve it little by little.
Hi guys, here's an update to my speeder. The hull is complete and assembled, just have to finish the cockpit, pilots and harpoon gun. I also have to get busy building a base, I am tired of placing the model on books or boxes. I also tried to improve image quality as I have received criticism in regards to my picture taking ability and I think this set is an improvement. Let me know what you think.
Thanks
Thanks guys, I really appreciate the feedback. Turrican that's the nicest compliment, I tried hard to get there. I'll have her done very soon and will post some new pics.
Hi guys, just an update on the speeder. The red speeder is done, finished the pilots and interior, just a little assembly and then mounting to finish her up. I also built the gray speeder at the same time and I am in the final paint stages. Let me know what you think.
Stunning work Helio. Both look every bit the ILM filming tool. What base colour did you decide upon for Rogue Leader? Ive always seen the Lead speeder, in a more grey hue compared to the red livery hull colour. Loving the weathering techniques too, looks like lots of fine sanding sponge work?
Hey Lee, good to hear from you. I agree with you that the 2 speeders are different colors. My interpretation though is that the speeder with gray markings is a warmer gray leaning towards brown, yellow where the red speeder has more of a cooler gray leaning towards blue, green. What is also clear to me in building both is that they were built by two different teams as they do share the same castings for the brake boxes and guns and some other details. They are also the same dimensionally and share the same hull patterns but are very different in the way the hulls are put together.
Thanks Turrican for the kind words, I did use a Dremel for some of the dings. Another technique I used for weathering is a soft brass wire brush that I used for brushing the hull surface to get fine scratches.
Its good to see you still at these two amazing models.
Yes, the hull builds are very different, Leader has less of a step into the lower hull plate edges IIRC.
It also was finished on these edges with a T strip i think.
At least it's what I saw when I joined up my resin hull.
I like the tones used mate, look stunning, and the weathering just sells them even further.
As for base coat. I think Floquil SP lettering grey for Rogue Leader looks very close, grime for Rogue Two maybe.
What you have used though, has created some fantastic forgerie's of the ILM props for sure, really a pleasure on the eye.
I made the same assessment as you did, SP lettering gray seems to be the color they used for the gray speeder, the red speeder I am not completely sure but I used concrete mixed with white, I thought that Grime was too pale. As far as the hulls go I could write a 5 page essay on the differences. The plastruct trim on the bottom hull's leading edge is just an L shaped angle strip. I know that mass produced snowspeeder kits are all idealized versions of the craft as there is no way to cover all the differences between the 2 miniatures in a single kit. Thanks for the kind words I really appreciate it. I've also been meaning to congratulate you on some of your builds, pyro Red 3 is excellent as is your Y-wing conversion, both awesome builds. I have noticed that you have been real busy with some builds, are you also building the Probe Droid pods?
Yes I have SP Lettering in its lacquer vintage hue to be more correct.
I think this is applied to the ATAT and ATST too.
I heard concrete may have been used as the walker Base coat, but that info is a mile wide of the mark.
Grime, hmm enamel would be too pale for sure, but the few variants of lacquer grime look very good, but again there are a few differing Grime examples even from way back.
Thanks for the kind words on my recent work.
I'm very glad to be back building and painting and even finishing models for my own pleasure, and that's what it's all about, much more to come too.
I did build the PD pods some time ago buddy, many have bettered what I did years back, but they sure we're fun to I'D and piece together.
Hi my fellow SSM'ers, just wanted to inform you that my snowspeeders are finished. All that is left to do is build bases for each. Here is the final gray speeder's paintjob. Feedback is much appreciated.
Wow! This is beautiful. I only wish that I could do such paint work. I have no place to work any way. I live with my mom. I'm more of a cars, trucks and motorcycles kind of girl which I think I said before in another thread. It's also the reason why I don't post anything since this site is dedicated to science fiction modeling. I only joined to get help with casting. I look around from time to time to see what neat things there are to look at. I do love sci-fi. but I have a lot of model cars that need to be built! Thank you for sharing as I've seen other modelers say. I hope to do something like this someday once I get all my cars done.
