Hi all! My name is Jay Machado, I'm a Senior Hard Surface Modeler and Texture Painter at Industrial Light & Magic in San Francisco CA. Though I do CG modeling for a living and often in my spare time, I love making things and getting my hands dirty. My Instagram features a lot of the costumes and model building I've been doing. I did a lot of practical modeling as a kid, mostly car and plane models with my dad but the increased availability of great Star Wars model kits has reignited my passion for it. I'm currently in progress on the DeAgostini Millennium Falcon and I have a whole pile of Bandai kits waiting for me after that. My recent work as a modeler on The Force Awakens and Rogue One has really made me appreciate the copious amounts of research by fans on forums such as this and has made me fall in love with the kitbashing workflows used in practical model shops. I've adopted a workflow where I've used 2D kit scans from this community to generate CG versions of them and create a parts library. I also teach a Hard Surface Modeling course with CG Master Academy in which I teach this workflow to my students. I feel that there is often a divide between practical and digital modeling but I see digital modeling simply as an evolution of practical modeling and with technologies like 3D printing things have potential to go full circle. I feel that many digital modelers need to realize that and learn more of the history of modeling because there are valuable lessons to be learned there about aesthetics and levels of detail. In addition to consolidating research from various sources my goal with it is to create a VR experience that will enable you to explore the Falcon and it's surroundings.
