1/72 hasagawa leopold kit

I have the first gen. casting of the Roger Young from starship troopers to trade or a complete wostok kit.

Is this for an ILM style kit,or someone elses' models? If you're trying to build anything from Star Wars,or Battlestar Galactica - You want the Tamiya version,as this is what they always used. This is what I have,and it has the exact same tooling detail as the ILM models have.

Yep! i sure have Don, the Hasagawa kit is the only one that was used, I dont even think tamiya even produced one until after those movies, if at all. (sorry Chris).

I understand it is a "badge of honor" to say that you have used the original kits as the studio model had. But, when one is as prolific as you are and needing the same kits over and over which are forever dwindling in the real world have you considered investing in getting some cast up? They will still "be" correct for all intents and purposes even if not rendered in Japanese injection molded plastic.

I know Don, but i dont have any rubber, and the one main piece wouldnt be easy to cast and would be prone to warping.(main body)
Besides, the whole kit is just chock full of the best greeblies out there, you would use gallons of rubber to cast all of the parts.
But... if I had a full kit, then I could cast up the parts I need.
I used all I had on the flattop.

Actually - Tamiya came before Hasagawa did. In fact ten years - 1965 before anyone ever saw a Hasagawa kit anywhere! You can look at Red leader,and Red 2,and see the Tamiya decals that were cut in half,and applied to the Saturn V engine housings. This is what we all used back in the day for kit bashing. If you look carefully in behind the scenes photos - you can clearky see Tamiya kits all over the old ILM shop.

Actually - Tamiya came before Hasagawa did. In fact ten years - 1965 before anyone ever saw a Hasagawa kit anywhere! Here,Jerry - this is for you. In these photos,there are a bunch of Tamiya kits,although no one ever deliberately shot photos of them - they are indeed a staple of the ships seen in the first to the last real Star Wars movies ( before the bastardised versions).

There is a small red arrow beside the head of the Sand crawler where you can barely see a Tamiya kit on the shelf.



This one is obvious. This is from 1979. This is the 32" inch Millenium Falcon made for The Empire strikes back.



The red arrows are where the kits used were stashed until needed.

I'd like to cast some of the parts.. main reason I bought it.. the bad news about the 1/72, is that someone kind of sort of started putting it together.. and unfortunately, they didn't do a very good job of it either.. I believe I can disassemble it with a little care.. I learned a trick.. put it in the freezer to make the glue brittle.. that might work here.

Unfortunately,I cannibalised this gun barrel for the four foot X-wing kit that I'm mastering right now. This was my uncles'. I found it laying in pieces on a shelf in my grandmothers' garage when salvaging what was worthy before putting her house up on the market. The original box is now long gone,but I do believe that this kit was first marketed in 1970,or 1971. Let me see if I can find it for you.

Are sure its a Tamiya kit Cris? I got a some 70's * 80's catalogues coming soon. I'll check them but I don't think Tamiya ever made a Leopold.

They sure did! The bottom of the railcar that this came off of says - Tamiya with the two stars emblazoned in the bottom left corner when you look at it upside down with the business end of the barrel facing away from your body. This also says "Tamiya precision models - Made in Japan Copyright 1971". This is in a dark gray colour whereas,the Hasagawa kit was olive drab = DEFINATELY TAMIYA. I too,was amazed to see this firsthand,and now you can't get it anywhere! I've tried all kinds of places,but none of them will have a 30 plus year old kit just lying around! This is why I have to get all my stuff off ebay.

That's the Hasagawa version. It shows the model in gray on the box top,but when you look at the kit scan it's olive drab,as this is the colour all the Hasagawas' come moulded in. The Tamiyas' all came moulded in the gray colour you see in my picture of it in the four foot X-wing build thread. This is to distinguish between the two brands. I wish I could've kept the rest of the railcar this came off of to prove it,but I didn't keep that part,as it wasn't a neccessary component of the ILM build. Otherwise,I would've kept the entire thing. I'm going to recast this barrel,then give it back to my uncle,so he can have the entire kit again.

I'll keep my eye out for this kit on the shelves of my local hobby store. You guys will be hardpressed to find this kit,as it was only released for a short time. Why it was only released,and discontinued is anyones' guess,but I'm thinking it was because it wasn't very popular. There are a lot of kits that aren't available anymore that have surfaced from time to time,and I'm sure that this is one of them. The only other thing I can think of is that most of the kits that were sold were also built,or kitbashed by now. If you can find one unbuilt - you've obviously found a goldmine,as this is proving to be a rare kit! For the record - the kit my uncle built,wasn't painted,but glued poorly. If I can get this from him,or find a boxtop photo of this,I'll post it.

Understood. I just wonder if Hasagawa's versions were used by Apogee in the early eighties - when? I'll do some research on this tonight,and I'll post my findings tomorrow if I can't find them before then.

Yes they were using the "Ansio Annie" as the Hasegawa Leopold was known back then, and they are a dark gray plastic versus the light gray for the Leopold

Hasegawa. That is correct & hasn't been retooled as far as I know. I got a couple of all three kits & they weren't expensive. I believe Jerry's just trying to save actual $ through tradeing.

Yeah and because Hobbyboss released their 1/72 Leopold (which is a scale down 1/35 Trumpeter Leopold since trumpeter and hobbyboss is the same company ) I dont think Hasegawa will do another pop of the Leo noone would buy the old Haseg when they can get for the same price of cheaper the awesome hobbyboss kit ! The stock starts to dry up !

Last time I ordered one about 6 months ago it was about $30 from my local hobby shop.
Last one I picked up at an IPMS show was $20 NIB.

The kit is current and can be ordered by any hobby shop. Don't get it from Ebay.

Actually - you're half right and half wrong. The first ones used by ILM were Tamiya, but for some reason they stopped production of these in the first six,weeks making them very rare. I read that the Leopold was sold to Hasagawa because Tamiya had problems moving the kit to the shelves. There was little public interest,but the box my uncle has stashed has the same cover on it,but it says Tamiya. After Hasagawa bought the die moulds, there was no retooling done, but it changed colours from a dark gray to an olive drab green signifying a changerover. So you are correct - the Hasagawa is what they used on later models. Oh well, there's no accounting for taste!

Cris get that box & get us a photo. That would be one of the rarest kits on the planet if so. I don't doubt your word but iwe really need to see a picture for varification. This is an important discovery.

My uncle just got moved into his new apartment this last month. I'll see if he's unpacked everything. He might still have the Leopold wrapped up. I hope he doesn't throw the box away! He's been sorting through all his stuff, and throwing things away left,and right! He has some D&D figures that have no boxes. I saw this box when he lived at home,but I have yet to see it since. I'll ask him about it after I get the parts cast from the leopold gun itself.
