1/24 scale Ralph McQuarrie X Wing concept

This is a scratchbuild based on this painting by Ralph McQuarrie of the X-Wing concept. This isn’t the design they went with for the film, but to me it looks more advanced and sleek.

Based on this painting.



I started by sculpting out a form, then vac forming over it.



Because vac forming tends to soften sharp edges, I made the top fuselage in two halves.

I decided to make the concept R2 unit.

I used the standard F4 turkey feathers, with the metal heat sinks.





Sculpting the pilot. Yeah, it's pretty rough.

Here's the first build up, I had to change a few things afterwards.

I found these LED flashlights for $1 a piece that were the same diameter of the engines, so I took them a part and used them for lighting. Since the RM X Wing's engines glow a whitish blue in the painting they worked perfectly.

I'm working on the cockpit/pilot.

I toned down the engine thrusters a little bit with the base color, they were kind of overbearing to me.

Some of these concept designs really do look amazing after being transformed from paper to an actual model.
You've done this one justice for sure and it's an impressive looking take on what might have been.

Sweet! I followed this on RPF and you have captured the painting X-Wing really well, and your paint job is top notch!

This build is one of the coolest non SS replicas I have seen!

This looks far better in person than it ever did on paper, I just wish I had done it first! What might have been NOW IS.

Actually, this IS a studio scale model of the X-wing. This is made to the actual scale of the other X-wings that were made for the film.



REL - I want to be the first to welcome you back to the new version of studioscalemodelers.com with all new ownership, and administration.

This X looks spot on for the real thing! I wanted to do one of these forever. I just don't have the time now, as there are too many things on my table - literally! If anyone deserves to have a contract with a studio - it's defintely you! I can only think of two other people off the top of my head here on these forums that have built ILM style models recently that should have a contract as well. I love the lighting behind the R2 unit as well as, the lighting in the cockpit. The marks along the fuselage, and the wings as well as, the markings are excellent, but you already knew that. Are any of these decals, or are these all painted on?
