you are correct about finding reference and figuring things out in the old days, but it was much easier to detail the Galactica back then because there were not very many pictures where you you could make out the detailing, so you could use whatever you had to greeblie the beast and it would look good! Take a good look at Jim's first replica and compare it to his latest commission for a nice comparison of the differences of then and now detailing.
Now it cost a fortune to get the correct kits and even with the CR casting bonanza it is still out of reach for a lot of people that don't do the project over decades. SS building teaches patience and perseverance all right!
