I've seen people use styrene instead. I don't recommend it. While styrene bonds nicely to acrylic, you can snap it back off. Acrylic bonds very strongly to acrylic! I've had joints so strong, when I tried to take them back apart (to test the strength) the parts snapped before the joint would break. You won't get a stronger joint than that.
