I did the vertical tubes with aluminum and everything else is kit parts. There's no part of the landing gear that seem functional or realistic were they to be full size. I think when the modelers were doing the original they went for a general look in keeping with the rest of the ship. There's no way that the landing gear on the model could support the weight of the model unless the entire assembly was cast in metal as a single piece. There just isn't enough surface are for the weight to be transferred through the separte parts as they are assembled. There's barely enough surface area for the glue to hold them together without any weight on them.
I'll definitely be doing some composites of this with a star field background. Maybe overlay this onto some screen shots to see what might have been in high resolution. My paint arrived today so I'll be working on the colors this weekend. I'll probably need to order more paint once I have the colors figured out. We'll see. Getting close.
I also got a bulk box of disposable plastic pipettes for measuring/mixing paint. The ones testors sells are really expensive. I found these on a science supply store. 400 for about $20.

Sometimes I build and think and sometimes I just build.
