I too have been impressed with Phil's work every since I seen his colonial movers . Absolutely love his style of weathering and could probably pick it out in a crowd of models . It is a unique style and is his signature ,so to speek !! Now he is noted for precission and clean crispness in this battlestar build . You have to face it Wombat , you've grown and improved as a modeler baby !!! I know I personally use your build progress as my reference bible !
Like doug said earlier , Your build pics would make awesome parts maps , they are so good ,crisp and clean . Hell Phil , you might as well add photographer to your resume now !! lol

Anyway cos ya like my pic's i'll throw this one at ya's. Again not spot on with things but close enough for me just the same as it has the look. A few of them plates should have been kit parts from how i see em but as i didn't know em i just used styrene instead. I think there is 3 or 4 of these hatches perhaps that are in one area but i'll let you guys try and spot which ones they should have been..

I've figured out the bug. It appears to be related to the number of posts threshold setting that would cause a new page to display. This can vary depending on your control panel preference setting. There is a forum default (at least with most board software) and you can customize this value in your control panel.

Let's say the setting is to break to a new page after 20 posts. You just added the 20th post on that page, so it should break and start a new page. But, the bug causes the new page not to appear. The post is there and it shows in the index that you posted. But, you can't see it.

The only thing you can do is go to your control panel and change the default number of posts per page to a lower number to force the page to break differently. Then, the posts should reappear. Or, just wait until there are enough new posts to start filling out the new page. At that point, the thread will display normally again and the missing posts will magically "reappear."

Keep an eye on it and see. The bug always happens when a page "gets full" of posts and is ready to "roll over" to a new page.

Ok gotcha with all that. Just need to come up with a number that wont multiple into whatever the count is the page gets stuck on. As it seemed to be post 200 this time selecting 30 as a preference would have got things viewable again i think.

Ken, thanks man! Yeah plenty of pieces not to mention chips get layed down in this area. Very time consuming stuff or perhaps it's just the way i go about things but it seems to take hours without seeing a lot from it.


Had to work Saturday so even less time spent on this over the weekend that would have been liked. Got a lil more layed down on it though and it's very slowly getting the look. Things are around the mark so i'm happy enough with that. Been in two minds when doing things at times. Some things i've been neatening up just a lil and others i have been staying true as best i can with the reference.

I'm sort of at the point again now with theh two 88mm Gun base pieces that stick out either side from the coffin. On the original they are not symmetrical in there placement but i'm thinking of doing just that with this. It'll look a lot neater just things will be placed a little different to how the reference shows. I'm in two minds on it really, any thoughts?

You need to stop kicking your own abilities there! You do it as well as, if not better than what i try to do. I've seen your revisions and they look great! It's sure had one hell of a makeover just in the time i've known ya. Think the big problem is you have that accuracy bug in ya more than ever since all them maps became public and you know what you are capable of these days compared to when ya started. You just need ta get back on it and finally finish it.. Then ya can start the next one afterall!

Ken you got it, it's a tank hull cut in half. Well it's cut in half and then you also sand it back some more to match the reference. They couldn't just be happy with the cutting in down the guts now could they? LOL

Guy's you know i like the look of seeing the SS builds in all there colours, before primer. You guys are right these sort of pictures would be ok for mapping i guess just not my works. I always have this thing about people maybe getting lead astray with things not being just right. Both part's and placemant even. At the end of the day you really can't go past good pictures of the original and the maps that were made public.

Maybe a side by side comparison ? Not to pic out acuracy but to see what the parts in question look like in thier natural color and unpainted state ,verses the original . Say a original " G " pic of the coffin section next to a Wombat ' G " pic of the coffin section !!!

Speaking of, a lil more done. A lot of hours went into the little amount you can see added since the last picture posted. Can't believe where the time actually goes when i see just how little the progress actually is when comparing the two.

Happy to say bar a few tiny parts that i don't know and some piping work, the aft end of the bottom is pretty much done. Added the last of the plating in that area last night. Next i think i'll remove the neck again so i can wrap the lower pipe with styrene easier. Then i can fit the neck for good, add the pyramid and get back to some more greeblie action.

Yeah thats what i've been thinking also but of course i really don't know which is nothinhg new there. Been looking for pictures of cargo/troop carriers but i haven't seen anything that looks right. The thing with this part is that one end has that 90 degree fold in it (the other end is cut off i'm thinking) which from the scans i've see doesn't seem to be the norm for the gates. Scale is another thing, if it's a small 1/72 / 1/76 then the slats would probably be sized about right but 1/35 i'm thinking would be too large. I do think it is one part and it has the same markings ( round dibits?) viewing it from either side. Perhaps 1/48 is something i should also be looking for? Bandai perhaps? Bit stumped on it at present just like many other things though really.

This build is a totally new thread. The old build thread was the one you brought back to life again.

It seems to be something like Charles mentioned earlier. Changing the number of posts viewable on a page seems to be the answer to at least making the posts appear again. It's something that will need to be looked at as it was pretty frustrating before a way was found to make em viewable. It works for me but is something that will need to be changed everytime the posts get stuck on a page.

I see Jerry is having a similar problem in his thread now.

Been a while since i did any update but i really haven't achieved very much in the way of progress for one reason or another since the last pictures. This weekend it's been because i've been crook and still am but maybe next weekend i'll be able to get back to it. Anyway since those last pictures and now a little more has been done as you can see, not a lot but i guess it's better having those extra bits layed down than not when i make a return to it. Things that were done are things like some pipe wrapping on that lower pipe and the assembly and scribing of the throat box. Thats not attached yet and just sitting in place. Everything else though is glued down and i must say it's been some challenge for myself gluing down that fine piping. I don't think i'm cut out to work with materials that fine after trying to work with it. Guess when the primer goes on we'll see how bad things really are there.. LOL
A few more parts as you can see and like before things are out here and there a little, i just can't get things straight for the life of me but least this is all on the bottom and will hardly be seen when done.

So thats it for now, just thought i'd let ya's know this thing is still a happening thing..

Sorry to hear you are crook. I was going to drop in on Sunday but decided to plant some palm trees in between rain showers instead. Eventually this scrappy winter will force me back to the Galactica!

Staring to get over this bug finally, not there yet but feeling a lil better as each day goes by. Got some castings from CR last week and in there was another set of the domed parts that go on the throat box. One was pretty bad with some air bubbles but the main reason was i messed up my first pair trying to add some more curvature to them. They became test subjects for this new pair. So why try and add more curvature? As far as i know and thats going by the maps the parts should be Wostok parts. The part's from CR were created for there Atlantia build and infact i was told i would need to trim a small amout off there diameter to fit the Galactica build. Well when looking at them they appear to be pretty flat with very little curvature to them at all. So this got me thinking on what i could do to make em look a little closer to the Wostok part i came up with an idea but but didn't do a great job with the original ones. As i said they became test pieces in the end.



So here are the castings as they come from CR. Pretty flat as you can see..

   


I marked out the chips with pencil before sanding them off so i could try and press the casting between two Wostok parts. I learnt with the first pair the chips would need to be removed to do this as the surface needed to be one level or distortion to the casting occurs. So sanded em off and then went ahead and dipped the casting in boiled water for a bit to sofetn. After a minute i placed it between the two Wostok parts and pressed them together using a clamp.

   


After running under some cold water i released the clamp and the outcome was pretty pleasing. About as good as i could hope for anyway.

   


Then i reaplied the chips going on the markings i had done previously. Not too bad untill i noticed looking at the reference later that some of the chips were out of position on the castings compared to the original. Not enough to bug me and left em as they are.

   

Finally it was getting em onto the throat box. I actually have one oriented slightly out but again it's not emough to bug me right now. Slapped the other bits together along with some more chippen and this is the outcome. Throat box is still just sitting in place so may be out of position by a whisker and theres a good chance it may be that way when it comes to glueing it the way i do things..LOL

The underside is slowly getting there but there is so much more to still do. I think looking at it the underside of the neck has more going on than the entire underside of the body. Theres something to look forward to now!!

I need you to come over and help me restart my build. Just can't do it as every time I look at it, it's just overwhelming. Let's get it up on the stands and get the underside throat section boxed up so I can get detailing!

That dome press is a great trick....very clever. Wow, the greeblie action in those pics up above is incredible. Makes the shuttle look like a piece of cake in comparison (and I know how long I struggled on that one).

Ok, it's time for you to get cracking, enough of that now! You think looking at yours and the work to do is overwhelming? You should see how things are for us just getting started. I'm sure it hard at times to get the motivation to hit it again especially as it's been going on for so long. But hit it again you will and finish it hopefully sometime pretty bloody soon. Sounds like a plan, turn it over and hit them areas then if thats what you want to do. Not sure what help i can really be but i guess i could bring a stick over and prod ya till ya get cracking? You just need to look at how little you have to do there and not think of it the other way, afterall, it's almost there really. Depending on what time ya get home perhaps Friday night i can drop in?

You know i might have an 80% done bottom of the body of a SS Battlestar soon but thats about it. I don't think i wanna look at how much there is still to do really. I was looking at the underside of the neck the other day and thinking that area alone is gonna take me forever ta do. This thing really seems to suck up the hours and afterwards i can hardly notice what has been added in that time. I don't know where the time actually goes?? I know i'm slow, but am i that slow?? The shuttles took us how long? This thing is gonna gonna be a looooong build using that as any sort of guide. What have i got myself into??

Jase thanks again mate and hopefully this build isn't too off putting for ya. Thats not the plan and any of us that take on this build i'm sure are not entirely happy with our own works. Just need ya to see that yourself and get cranking on the damn thing again mate!

Didn't have too much motivation for it this weekend yet still spent some hours on it. You wouldn't know by looking again though. Once again not everything is placed perfectly but still looks about right. Phil is right Jase . One thing that I have learned over the years , especially in this hobby , The very worst critique in any build subject , is the builder themselvs . Even a carpenter 's house needs the most work ,or a mechanic's car needs more work fo an inspection , or a bodymans car needs the most bodywork ....... The list can go on . The bottom line is , that you are one of only a handfull of people in the world that is lucky enough to say that " I have a studio scale Battlestar and I built it with my own hands " !!!
I know I would love to see you back on that build , if anything ,to get your building confidence built back up . We are all here to support , and that is what this place is here for , REMEMBER !! Now get back at it mate !!! lol

I was hoping to see Phil's Galactica and drag him off to see Prometheus this weekend, but the bastard has himself quarantined at home with the flu. Maybe next weekend mate and yes, the movie is spectacular.

That detail work looks pretty damn clean to me, nice job. You will be happy to know that I've started back on my build with some small detail work trying to finish off the body lid. Typical, 3 hours of work gluing on maybe 12 tiny parts! But seeing your stuff is intimidating to be honest. I'm dreading redoing those areas on mine after seeing work like this!

So another week goes by so time for this weeks progress. Had some issue with a nerve the past week and it's really slowed things down again. The damn flu for two week and now this. At this stage i'm still struggling with it but some stronger pain killers have allowed a little more work this weekend.

So here it is, i don't seem to have things exactly right but once again it's close and will do,i think, at least for now. Just a little more to finish off on top there (which is the bottom) and then it'll be onto the undearneath side of this neck.


Btw Mike, thats fantastic to read you got stuck back into yours. I don't wanna be the the one ta say, bout time but, bout time mate!! LOL

I've been looking at all this a lil more closer and i may have to re work a little of that. Theres one thing that i'd like a lil better but that will have a flow on effect with some other parts. Just to move that one part will require another six be moved also but i'll probably do it anyway..
