Salzo Viper

This is the SS Viper that was put out by Mike Salzo and it's another example of the fine kit's he produces.The casting's were very clean and very crisp as per normal.It went together very easily and it didn't take a lot of work to add the engine lighting either.A bit of dremal work was all that was required for that part.This one is painted in enamel's with a custom mix.Not my favourite choice when painting but i couldn't get a colour mixed up right in the acrylic's i normally use,so i went back to a mix i had used before on another Viper previously.A bit of the salt paint chip effect i used on this one also along with the good old pastels.

Indeed it is!!! What's really great about these models is the fact that you can get it right,and not have to worry about making it exactly like any particular wing number. Excellent job!

Yep you can really get right with your paint work mate. Did you paint the thrusters gold or are they machined?

Thanks guy's,it was another fun build to do.We really are spoilt with the quality of these kit's from the top producers of them out there these day's.It's a lot different to the first SS resin model i purchased,that one was a bit ugly and had everything in it you don't wan't in a kit.But these thing's are almost as good if not betta than what you'd get in a plastic kit,the detail and crispness of the casting's is just outstanding these day's.
Cobra,i agree,being able to do your own thing with the weathering is a lot more fun than trying to copy what's been created before like with the Movers.This was fun to weather up.
Jase,the can's i just painted in a copper colour mate.Not quite the same as those awesome viper's we are seeing with the proper thing's but it still sorta looked correct.Now what i'd do to get one of those other's!!

Is the glow in the engines just reflections? Nearly looks lit in these photos.

Well the paint work on the original Vipers & Raiders I would not say was great at all. The majority of the models other than the larger Capital ships was pretty damn rough. Your paint looks like machined thrusters in there mate. Did you light that kit?

Doug,once again thank you for your kind word's mate!I'm actually not that happy with the end result looking at it these day's.Maybe another re do down the track once i've learn't how to weather properly instead of just arsing my way through it.
Doug n Jase, the engine have light's fitted,they are on in the picture's but i took those shot's outdoors so they are not showing to be that bright.Here's another i took when i first finished it but prior to opening up the windows on the back section of the cockpit after it was pointed out they should be larger by someone over at RI.

Well, it looks great and hard to see any flaws apparent in your photos.

In general it's good to be your own best critic. I had an instructor in a design class who said that if you continue to like your own work after you have finished it they you didn't learn anything along the way. That thought has always stuck with me with what ever I do.

I wouldn't worry about re-doing anything just take anything you don't like as a tool to improve your next project.

What the hell are you taking about? What's not to love? You did an excellent job on the weathering and the lighting! I say leave it alone. Who cares if this isn't up to someone elses specs? They offer to pay for this,or any of the materials,or even to help did they? Don't worry about it. I've been doing this for thirty plus years - you have a masterpiece,and something to be proud of.

Look,i'm not saying it's a dog,but i've seen what people who can really weather can do.It's stuff i've never attempted,so i guess i've only got myself to blame there,but compared to what i've seen,this is a little off the mark some to what i now want.That's part of what we are all doing i guess,learn,attempt and finally succeed?
I guess the other thing instead of re doing it would be just to buy another and have two?But that'll still lead back to the same thing and one i'll be more fond of than the other.Theres no plan's to do anything at present with it,shit i gotta learn how to do what i wanna do to it before i can even think about doing it.

If you redo the weathering now you'll probably end up doing the same thing again. It's probably best to do other projects for a while, experiment with other techniques, etc. and then come back after you feel comfortable with a different approach. I wouldn't attempt any re-do until you feel that light bulb go off and know exactly what it is you don't like and comfortable knowing you can make it different. Until then just enjoy it - it will be there when you're ready.

I can't remember the last time I've heard any builder say how happy they were with their own work, or that they couldn't have done better.
That's actually part of what I consider to be behind those who are good- they keep striving to do better.
But as an impartial observer I can tell you that you did a damn nice job! And, while you can be proud of this one , knowing you as I do, I'm sure we can all expect more great things to be coming from your bench!

You're right there Doug!Theres no point at this stage trying to change it.I gotta actually learn how to do the weathering first or it'll be re do after re do.I don't even think it's a hard thing to do,well i'm sure there is still a trick or two ta do it but basicly i've just never given it a go.All it is is weathering with oil's.Seeing what Gene did with that SS one over on RI and also Sean's big bird has me wanting to get that awesome effect before adding the pastels.
I guess i'm just fucking slack and again i really don't have any real method of doing anything i do.That's where all the arse come's into it!!

If one of us pull's our finger out it'll be looking even betta real soon.That'd be a feathered one i guess,so it rules me out!
I think you are right,us modeler's are always striving to be betta.With all the fantastic work's we all get to see,it's easy to be inspired to improve oneself.I have found a lot of self satisfaction can be had when something goes right!

Well Chris,i did just that with my old MIM one,i couldn't look at it the same after the Salzo one was built up.But i think a re work would be in order for this one though bud.

Well i hope you missed it cos ya been busy with that A-Wing build WE are doing mate?
I think in all honesty i'm a traditionalist when it comes to these build's so doing something a bit different wouldn't be the way i'd want to go.Now having two is appealing to me and i guess it'd just mean re doing this one at the same time as doing another.Least that way they should both sorta be about the same and hopefully take care of the favoured one situation?
