I'm pretty sure that you can buy small torch reflectors from places like Jaycar, Dick Smith or your local electronics store. Even try a lamp shop, buy some cheapo halogen desk lamps and tear out the reflectors?

The diamater looks a little small compared to the Saturn V part but looks right in the photo. Maybe I can find a torch reflector thatwill do the job? The main problem is theyre AC & my LED's are DC. I could run two separate switches. I could have got LED ones Mike but theyre not the same lighting affect. this thing burned my eyes hardcore. You can't tell in th photo how bright the sucker was.
These are extremely bright! More than you, or any studio
would need for lighting a model of this size. I had to tone down the colour saturation (hue) of these pictures because my camera turned everything yellow under the incandescent lights of my kitchen.

I'm sure that everyone here would notice! I don't see what's wrong with that. It's obvious that these engine bells were originally lined with aluminum foil to reflect the light from the bulb. This would be 100% studio accurate.
The whole surface of the engine bell just glows white hot. The tin foil makes sense to get that effect.
Anyone have a good star background for photoshop purposes. I've looked for some online and just get the ones with nebulas and other stuff. I want one that's simple, yet realistic to paste the model photos into.

I'll see what I can do.
Thanks !!

I can turn engine bells, but there's no way to keep them from shorting out the lightbulbs.
Here, Doug: I hope this will help you. I made this, so if you need me to change it to look more appealing, let me know.
It was just the wiring. All my wires are joined by connectors rather than soldering. Thats good & is now fixed other than I have now wrecked both bulbs.... The little legs that go in the sockets have snapped off. Can't win.

That's cool, Chris. Thanks. I'll give that a shot.

That sucks. The sockets on mine are really tight too. One of my bulbs has bent legs now and will probably be broken before long. If you're not able to get those bulbs down there, let me know. I can get more for you.

Hey, you guys - those contacts should go inside easy. I see that there's a hole, then a smaller semicircular curve for the contacts on the bulb to twist into a locked position. The hole for insertion might need to be resized. You might be able to use your Moto-tool to remove a little of the ceramic to keep it from bending, or breaking off the contacts.
I picked some up today from the hardware. Was concerned I might not be able to get them. Theyre now 10watts though! Can't find 5's. Ive got the connectors secured at the right depth for the bulbs to go in. They actually hold the engine bells on. I might not secure the bells or if so, only just so i still have access if something goes skewif! I'll post some pics soon. I had the privillege of meeting 2 very nice & talented modelers today. I'll write up a thread in the discussion area.
That's good. I tried the 10watters as well and they look spectacular - even better than the 5 watters. My only concern with them is that they are even hotter than the 5s and the 5s to me look good in the photos. If you change your mind and want the 5s i'm happy to send them.

Thanks Doug. I should be able to find some some where. Just grabbed these to get the lights afixed so I can move on. The connectors are secured at the right depth. I can get replacement bulbs. everything is working so can probably run the wireing through the armature & close it up. Hangin to get some parts on this bugger.
Picked up my brass tube & rod the other day for the lighting connectors. Like Phil & Doug am going OG with this. This is the first time I have worked with brass & am looking forward to it even though its not for detailing. Gotta start somewhere.
Very cool Jase. I like using the brass for detail but this was the first time using it for a power connection. I was leerie about it but Phil showed that it works and it does. The hard part was soldering the socket part together without clogging up the socket part with solder.

Well its a pretty productive afternoon. I just couldn't help myself & started on detailing the rear & bottom rear sections as they looked to be the most difficult. Yes I am a glutten for punishment. Anyway I really have had a good time this afternoon. I forgot how much fun just building a kit is Better ref would certainly help but am more than thankful for what has been shared. Without it I think we'd be screwed for sure. Any way a couple of bits were broken on my pieces that sit on the backplate & I noticed Doug had the same problem so will fix the same as he did., with some brass rod. Thanks Dougy. Have also drilled those pieces after snapping the bits off that brass power supply tubes go. All is good though am going to get just slightly larger tube for that job.
So after that I secured them so I could drill through for when I attach the brass power rods through the kit pieces. Then I started detailing the back & rear bottom. A couple of hours later & have completed those whole sections! Time just flew & if I hadn't have needed a refresher(scotch) would have kept going. Im really happy with todays effort & had a good time away from all the stress that has been going on this week. Thanks for looking
Good job getting stuck into it Jase. It's great when you get on a roll ain't it?
I still don't have this kit. Being the BG fan I am, that's inexcusable, but the budget's a bit tight these days saving for a house. Still, I think the shuttle's a must-have, no doubt about it.
Mike
'Helm, make ready to move. Flank speed and fuel be damned!'
Thanks fellas. Ive had no problems whatsoever with the parts on this kit. I was going to use actual kit parts like Phil but thought it just a waste. Mikes castings are great. just a little touch up & theyre fine. No one will tell the difference once the paint goes on. I probably could have got the lot done last night but got thirsty & ran out of glue... Im havin fun again. Its been a while.
Thought Id get a bit more done this afternoon but have been stock on these side engine parts. The 2 Harrier parts on the studio model look like identical parts reversed. In the kit the parts that are supplied are different. Two are shorter & stubbier where to my eye they should all be the longer ones? Is it just me or a 2 of these parts the wrong ones? I think the should all be the ones on the bottom in the first picture.
Im also missing a little piece from the bottom sides. Are the pieces that were missing from Mikes original kits. This sort of thing is just so annoying when your on a roll
Thats what I thought. They just weren't lining up correctly to my eye & then noticed the difference which then made it clear. Were they identified to Mike? I just sent him an email. I think the part on the bottom Im missing is an 8Rad piece. I don't have a Harrier yet & will be a little while before I have spare funds for kits so I hope he sends me some relatively soon..............
I need those four scoops, Jase. There are at least three of top two scoops right behind R2 in a circle, and two of the bottom scoops in that picture on each side of the hyperdrive motivator behind the first four. You can clearly see this in the picture. The straight part attached to those scoops behind R2 is the 1/72nd scale Leopold gun barrel, which I already have.
Ok Mikes sending me some more parts which is great but Im missing one more I can see & one is broken. The Otaki D51 part of all parts has 2 little knobs broken off the end. Call me particular but I want these on as its on top & noticeable. Oh to who? Me.... Sometimes I hate being an artist. I say to people its not an abillity its a disabillity Anyway Im sure Mr Salzo will be kind so I moved on getting most of the belly completed other than 2 parts. I need one more Tiger/Panther radiator as I used one on my Battlestar butt plate the other one Im missing looks like a tank periscope right at the front on the chin? Also got most of the head parts on bar the wiring that runs across the sides & top so really just have the back end to work on with a couple of bits & pieces. Ive left the landing gear & radars for last as they are more than likely to get broken. Oh & finish up the wiring connections when I get a slightly larger brass tube. I used brass rod on the top section for the strips on either side the little doowickys sit on. My first brass detailing
The part that sits behind the head is wrong for the original studio model. It shouldn't have the pipes in the centre. I think they were added later but are not on her in the original black & white photos. I want to change that...

Jase. I received the revised parts from Mike. that whole plate you're pointing to is a new part. Maybe best to hold off until you get the rest. I think I've sorted the parts i got by area so I'm not sure what else came with mine but I know that's one. that Tee shaped part in your 3rd to last photo had the same part broken off. I'll scratch a fix to it. Looking good, Man !!!!

Hey thanks for that info Doug. I'll drop Mike another mail & see if he's including that. What else was there?
Im pretty happy how she's coming together now. I'll get my Brass rod tomorrow so will have that sorted also for the connections. Im going to have it so my external power source slides into the internal points. Once getting through the lights its been a breez to put together. Mike really makes great kits.
I'll sort through the parts and see what there is and get info to you asap.
As a clarification note to anyone reading these threads about missing or corrected parts.....
Mike Salzo has done an exemplary job with customer service on this one and really gone beyond the red line (so to speak) in providing updated parts. The kit is literally 99% PERFECT and yet he's been willing to put out updates to correct the 1% that was identified as inaccurate or missing at our request. You can't ask for better than that !

Ok, here's the lowdown.
Last picture - the big front plate as mentioned. the small thing on the left is directly behind part 51 in the top view. the other thing right behind this one and I thought it was in the kit already, not sure now. the other thing is 2 addtional parts as I think only 2 were provided but 4 needed.
Second photo, the gun thing was id'd as one short from the kit. I don't think I got a replacement of this but did get one from another source so I'm alright. You might want to check with Mike or confirm you have 3 of these. the other part was id'd as being incorrect in the kit but this is the rigth part from the Morser (or leopold, maybe, one of the two). Jase you should have this from your stash but I don't think it was replaced from Mike.
The first photo is, I believe, a new part but I can't be sure. i don't remember seeing it in the original kit. I'm not really sure what it is now. Maybe part of 28/29 in the top part map?
As for others, in the top map, part 36 is a tube or pipe to scratch build and add to the model. Same with 2 small tubes on either side of part 60 (visible in the top view black and white photo on MMM).
Lastly, Mike was kind enough to send me a set of the harrier parts when I asked right before he shipped my parts.
For some reason I'm thinking there's one more thing but I can't remember now. If I remember I'll let you know.

Ok so its been an extremely busy week at work & Sunday was fathers day. I have though been very busy working on this build. I am still acouple parts short, some broken & some needing replacing for accuracy. I just finished installing the lighting plugs. Its got a first coate of primer & Im hoping Mike salzo doesn't get pissed at me asking for more stuff... cause Im fussy. I have used some kit parts cause I am also impatient but thats just me. So now Ive gotto upload 50 pics to show you what Im talin about. I love this kit. It has gone together very well & will little effort apart from the lighting....
Hahahah & what you didn't see was the smoke coming from the engine bells after I took too long to take photos! Man its a fine line between accuracy & looking kool!
Now Im down to my last parts i see Ive not made the missile boxes correctly on the bottom. So snapped them off & of course broke one set. Lucky reglueing resin parts is usually easy as it snaps cleanly. I love that about resin parts. Also had to add a broken piece to the other one. I am amazed I can do this. This is what I have learned from watching everyones builds. I now can look at parts & think of ways to fix them. So these are now fixed.
I was going to glue mine together too but stopped because I wasn't sure how to paint inside there without an airbrush. I guess with an airbrush you'd be able to get the paint back in there no problem. I've had to snap a few parts that had been glued on with CA glue and you can do but it's tricky. Clean breaks in the resin glue up pretty clean.

Wow,you've come a long way with this build now Jase. It's really looking the part as well.
Mine is obviously gonna be the last one finished outa our group now,but i'm happy seeing you get real close to finishing you're first SS build there. What a cool subject as well for the first one ya got there.
Keep at it mate, but you'll have ta get back with the G again soon?I'm feeling good to go again here and i wanna be around the same build stage as you so WE can share the pain with any problems WE might find. LOL
